It has been a bit of a week of fears that just passed because now the approach to any ending of She-Hulk a Marvel series is tormented almost exclusively by disappointing memories: events hastened beyond all reasonable limits, revelations that caused irreparable plot holes and a tendency towards spectacularization which, however, most of the time ended in a stalemate; some aesthetically fascinating sequence, of course, but often with a mediocre realization and without a necessary basis to achieve the desired effect. From the start, She-Hulk: Attorney at Law, precisely because of the legal comedy setting, it had aroused in us the hope that it could subvert this rather nefarious trend, yet nothing could prepare us for what we have witnessed.
The She-Hulk epilogue is, in a nutshell, a delightful madness drenched exquisitely in meta trickery and even a hint of self-criticism from Marvel Studios themselves (moreover, She-Hulk’s ending is the shortest in the history of Marvel). It is true that in the end it only weakens the general narrative, but the incredible deconstruction of the last act typical of cinematics carried out and the wonderful ironic spirit with which it is conducted far outweigh it.
She-Hulk Episode 9 Review: The Story
We find Jen (Tatiana Maslany) in prison after the nervous reaction she had at the gala, as it is as if she has proved to the world that she is an uncontrollable monster in certain emotional states (here you can find our review of She-Hulk Episode 8). Her co-workers manage to get her released, provided that she, similarly to Emil (Tim Roth), no longer turns into a Hulk, complete with an inhibitor. The consequences, however, are much more serious: she is forced to give up her job, the balance she had managed to find with so much effort between her two “souls” has been forcibly taken away from her, and the only person who could understand it is always unattainable. One thing motivates her to move forward, which is to find the real head of the infamous Intelligencia and, in keeping with the genuine spirit of the series, sue him for defamation.
First, it is impossible to talk about this episode without mentioning even in passing the sensational opening sequence, which follows almost verbatim the intro of the historic show dedicated to the Hulk starring the iconic Lou Ferrigno, even using especially cheesy special effects. A gem that paradoxically sets the tone of the entire conclusion because the truth is that at the end of this half-hour it will seem the most normal and sensible aspect. At one point, the series wedges itself precisely into the classic Marvel series finale seen – and criticized – in abundance, with furious fights that in the narrative make very little sense.
She-Hulk Episode 9 Review and Analysis
Something does not add up, it is exaggerated even for the style of Marvel Studios, so much so that it is more like a free-for-all taken from the chest by wrestling. And we just say that even Jen is not at all happy with the solutions adopted in her show of her and she will do everything – literally – to change them. We don’t want to spoil even a pinch of the surprise, just know that the second part of the finale is like a lysergic journey where every line of dialogue has an ulterior motive or a hidden criticism and self-criticism, which forms a tornado of freshness and overwhelming madness.
The cost, however, is not cheap: several plot twists scattered throughout the episodes are trivialized or directly ignored, and many questions do not have an answer and probably will never receive it – for example, we would still be wondering from the very beginning why Titania (Jameela Jamil) attacked a courtroom – and consequently, She-Hulk also adds to the long list of Marvel series with important narrative issues. But in our opinion that boundless and reckless journey in meta territories and not only is priceless, but it is also of an amazing and brilliant audacity from the point of view of the script. It is perhaps the most striking example, together with the ending of Loki and the concept of WandaVision, of the experiments that we wanted from these series and that we have in fact, had far too rarely.
For you to have a little idea, without even giving away any spoilers, in She-Hulk we see questioned at the same point the fatherly question of superheroes, the presence of the X-Men in this reality, which were expressly mentioned here, the need to bring other characters for the universe to continue to expand and other things that the writers got tired of doing in different productions. Has the way this is done become more fun? Of course, at some point, the events become so unique that you even lean in your chair to see if you’re seeing what they show. However, I cannot leave without saying that the understanding of everything is thrown out the window in favor of a milder closure.
Let’s face it here, not even Intelligence poses a real threat there. The folks the Abomination cares for inside his retreat carry more danger than internet trolls, making things even less usable in closing. Titania? After the wedding, she becomes a huge comic relief and has stopped chasing the heroine. Her dental plan must have been very expensive and she learned her lesson. “Wow, Diego, so what does She-Hulk face in the end?”. I would tell you to watch it to see better, but I can say that she fights against an entire system. Is it something memorable and that will impact everything we know once and for all? Not. However, it is interesting to see how things progress through the unprecedented aspect of the approach. As if it were self-criticism, even if they repeat some of the mistakes that they recognize.
After you see them complaining about something and still making these things repeat on the screen makes you question the question of choices a little. It seems that the idea was one, then it becomes another and, in the end, it becomes something completely different. As if someone was undecided and entered everything to see if it worked. I admire the courage, but it doesn’t make it any less strange than it is.
Thank you for not including the Red Hulk, as mentioned in Episode 8. Thank you for not including anything from the Avengers, as was the original idea. However, the end tries to shake things up so much that you leave there more complex than when you entered. I mean, if we strictly follow what we’ve seen, it means that we will have more questions to be answered in Phase 5. Some are even unnecessary. However, for now, it was nothing close to what was expected or what would be considered a point that pleases the public. Well, watch it and see for yourself.
She-Hulk Episode 9 Review: The Last Words
The ending of She-Hulk, starting from an amazing and nostalgic opening sequence, is a concentration of pure madness. For half the episode, it seems to go quickly towards the usual quick conclusion, confusing and with numerous plot holes unfortunately typical of most Marvel Studios shows. But actually, something does not add up, it is exaggerated and ridiculous even when compared with some of the worst endings devised in these nearly two years. And even Jen herself is not at all satisfied with the solutions adopted. We do not say more, but it is only the beginning of a lysergic journey exquisitely destination and full of criticism and self-criticism by Marvel Studios which for us, alone, would be worth the price of the ticket for the entire series. The price is high however because it does nothing but trivialize many of the plot twists we have witnessed in recent weeks, so the appointment with an MCU series without narrative problems has yet to be postponed. But that trip is a crazy, cool tornado that you can’t miss.
