Shazam! Fury of the Gods Review: The Story Plot

Where were we? Following the thrilling events of 2019’s Shazam, Billy Batson (Angel Asher) and his foster brothers are having a blast living two separate but parallel lives: at home, they are the loving and irresistible foster kids of their extended family, but when duty calls the just secretly say the magic word “Shazam!” to transform into the Champions wielding the power of lightning. A life of superheroes is put to the test when the sisters Hespera (Helen Mirren) and Calypso (Lucy Liu) leave their kingdom to avenge the death of their father Atlas, who had stolen the stick of supreme power from the Great Wizard (Djimon Hounsou). Meanwhile, to complicate matters.

Four years after the first film directed by David F. Sandberg, the director returns behind the camera for the sequel Shazam! Fury of the Gods, multiplying the action, the fun, the abundance of good feelings and special effects, but forgetting along the way to rely on a more solid and balanced script. It’s a shame, because the obvious narrative imbalance penalizes the film with Zachary Levi and Helen Mirren, far from the surprising glories of the first chapter of 2019. But not everything is to be thrown away in this sequel. The story of Shazam, Fury of the Gods picks up shortly after the events of the first film.

Now Billy Batson (Asher Angel/Zachary Levi) is no longer the only superhero in the family, finding himself coming to terms with his brothers, and trying in every way to keep together a group of people who are still trying to discover their potential, each following a different path. Thus, the film oscillates continuously between the childish/adolescent dimension and the super one, carrying on the story of these heroes who, although out of the ordinary, find themselves facing a context much bigger than them from many points of view. History takes over all this, with the Greek epic becoming the main driving force behind all the magic present in the lives of these boys. We finally discover the origins of the term Shazam and the reasons for its existence, when Antheia (Rachel Zegler), Calypso (Lucy Liu) and Esperida (Helen Mirren) raid the world of humans to seek their revenge. These three goddesses, daughters of Atlas, belong to the past and are looking for the so-called “champions” to make them pay for what happened to their father and put an end to the domination of the magicians.

Shazam! Fury of the Gods Ending Explained: The Final Battle

Shazam! Fury of the Gods ends with Kalypso, played by Lucy Liu, making known her sinister intentions. The goddess, going against her sisters, wants to destroy the earth by infesting it with an army of frightening mythological monsters. However, at this point Shazam manages to convince the goddess Hespera, played by Helen Mirren, to place a magical dome over a stadium, so that the superhero can fight Kalypso and her dragon there without risking anyone else’s life. To defeat the goddess, he then unleashes the full power of the Wizard’s staff, the only tool that seems to be able to end the goddess’s rampage.

Using his lightning powers to power up the staff, and shouting Shazam! as she dives towards Kalypso, the superhero puts an end to the massacre, causing all the creatures scattered around the city to disappear along with her. It, therefore, seems that Shazam has won once again, but while Kalypso and her demons turn into dust, the teenager Billy Batson, whose alter ego is Shazam, is found dead and the stick drained of his powers. At this point, a funeral worthy of a God is organized for him, but to the joy of all, Shazam’s death does not last long, brought back to life by an unexpected ally…

Wonder Woman Comes to Shazam’s Rescue

In front of Shazam’s tomb, the Wizard who gave him the powers in the first film explains that only the spark of a god can restore his staff, but there are no gods left either, and this means that nothing can revive Billy. It is at this point, however, that the last remaining God enters the scene. Or rather, Goddess. Wonder Woman appears before the incredulous protagonists, naturally played by Gal Gadot. Using her powers to charge the staff, the goddess brings Shazam back to life. It’s an extremely epic moment, underlined by the famous sound theme that introduces the beloved superheroine and which concludes a series of references to her throughout the film.

Back in the land of the living, Shazam naturally wastes no time and tries to seduce Wonder Woman, who however leaves the scene making it clear that he is a little too young for her. The cameo of the Amazon played by Gadot is particularly significant not only because she brings the protagonist back to life, but also because she bodes well for the future of the character and her interpreter of her the future of the DC Universe. Her appearance, however, is not an absolute surprise for everyone, as Warner Bros. had already anticipated her (it is not clear whether voluntarily or by mistake) through a commercial released shortly before the release of the film.

Shazam’s Real Name

After meeting Wonder Woman, Shazam’s family reunites inside their new home, the previous one having been destroyed during the film. Then the Magician also makes his appearance, now wearing new clothes but also showing off a complete shave between his beard and hair. Revealing his intention to go around the world, eager to get to know him far and wide, he, therefore, gives a last farewell to Shazam and his family. Before he can leave, however, Billy asks him what his superhero name should be.

The wizard pauses for a long time, then simply says “Shazam”. This pays off for an ongoing gag throughout the film, in which the protagonist wonders what his superhero name might be, searching for something epic akin to Batman or Superman. Now that he knows he can call himself Shazam, he finally seems to be relieved of this doubt. Freddy, one of his brothers, however, is not impressed by this name and points out that probably something better can be thought of, perhaps alluding to what was originally the real name of the character: Captain Marvel (later changed for obvious reasons).

Will Shazam 3 Be Done?

As for the chances of seeing Shazam on the big screen again, it’s worth pointing out that there are two post-credits scenes in the film and both lay the groundwork for Shazam to continue to play a role in the new DCU. The end of Shazam! Wrath of the Gods goes a long way in establishing Billy Batson as a true superhero in this world, and it would be a shame if that’s where his story ends. Director David F. Sandberg has previously said that there’s nothing in this sequel that contradicts DC Studios’ plans, but that doesn’t necessarily mean Shazam will stick around.

Sandberg has therefore confirmed that, if this second chapter were to obtain significant gains, the possibilities of a third film on Shazam will become much more concrete. Future plans for the character do not seem to be lacking, also precisely in light of the two post-credits scenes. All that remains is to wait for the box office results of the film, as well as further announcements regarding future projects of the DCU, hoping that a third Shazam! fall among these.

Shazam 2, What Happens in The First Post-Credit Scene?

The first scene after the end credits of Shazam 2 opens showing us two characters that we have already seen in The Suicide Squad and Peacemaker: Emilia Harcourt (Jennifer Holland – wife of James Gunn) and John Economos (Steve Agee). The two walk through a forest discussing the fact that Amanda Waller has arranged a meeting between them and “someone.” This mysterious person seems quite important and has great powers but is a bit immature. They’re talking about Shazam/Billy Batson.

The two join him and watch as Billy shows off his powers against glass bottles. After interrupting him, they tell him they know his true identity and offer him a place “in Justice…”. The two do not have time to finish the sentence.  Billy interrupts them with a thunderous “Yes!”.

Unfortunately, the duo is talking about the Justice Society and not the coveted Justice League, and the disappointed teen makes it clear that he wanted to be a part of the main team. Emilia leaves and Billy keeps thinking about the name. Why didn’t they use a different name? Why use “Justice” for both? At that point, he has an idea… “The Avengers Society”… black screen.

Shazam 2, What Happens in the Second Post-Credit Scene?

In the second scene after the credits, we find Sivana still behind bars and with a showy long beard. She is doodling on the walls and, as happened in the post-credit scene of the first Shazam of 2019, Mr. Mind appears. The telepathic alien caterpillar tells Sivana that his plan needs more time and notes that they will soon have what they need to take over the world. Both scenes define key aspects of a possible Shazam 3. Whether or not Shazam 3 will happen remains to be seen.

Whether or not Shazam 3 will happen is still unclear, as DC’s film franchise is currently in a transitional phase. Following the launch of DC Studios in November 2022, co-CEOs James Gunn and Peter Safran announced their plans for a new DC Universe kicking off with Superman: Legacy in 2025. Before that, the remaining DC-approved film’s previous regimes have yet to come out – including Shazam! Fury of the Gods, followed by The Flash, Blue Beetle, Aquaman, and the Lost Kingdom. The fates of Billy Batson and the other heroes are currently unclear, but the mid-credits scenes of Shazam! Wrath of the Gods might offer some hope for Shazam’s future in the DC Universe.

Understandably, there have been many complaints about the apparent absence of Dr. Sivana (Mark Strong) and Mr. Mind in the Shazam! Fury of the Gods after the first film laid the groundwork for the arrival of a team of villains that could have led to the formation of the Monster Society of Evil. At this point, it is clear that the second scene serves to keep this possibility open. We are sure that Shazam 3 will be there, and we will see Billy again against Sivana and Mr. Mind.
