Severance Season 2 Episode 9 Ending Explained: Is Mark Harmony’s Son? The Mystery of Gemma and the Future of Mark?
Severance Season 2 Episode 9, follows Mark, who, after being partially reinstated, is taken by Devon and Harmony to the Damona Birthing Retreat, a place that allows change between the Innie and the Outie. His goal is to get Mark’s Innie to speak to Harmony about Gemma’s whereabouts. Meanwhile, Dylan decides to resign Lumon after discovering that Gretchen does not want to marry him, and Irving is forced to leave the city of Kier for Burt. Helly, meanwhile, spends the episode trying to find the Exports Hall. Meanwhile, in Lumon, Milchick challenges Drummond, marking a breaking point in his relationship with the company. With so many fronts open, the episode turns into a puzzle of betrayals, conspiracies, and final decisions that will lead the series to its end of the season.

Severance Season 2 Episode 9 perfectly sets up the finale, providing a glimpse of how each main character’s story might unfold. The opening moments reveal James Eagan’s high expectations for Helena. However, no matter what she does, he appears disappointed and even resents that she doesn’t eat raw eggs like Kier. After illustrating how Helena is crushed by her father’s expectations and her family’s legacy, the episode evokes empathy for Huang by hinting at her future in Lumon. Dylan’s innie also faces one of the most challenging phases of his life when he encounters his outie’s wife again. Meanwhile, Burt and Irving’s outies finally discuss their innies’ relationship and experience a complex array of emotions before parting ways. The season’s second episode concludes with Cobel, Mark, and Devon arriving at the Damona Birthing Retreat, where Cobel hopes to communicate with Mark’s innie.
Severance Season 2 Episode 9: Who is Leaving and Who is Staying?
The episode concludes with several characters making crucial decisions about their future in Lumon and beyond. Here we break down the key moments of the end:
Irving Leaves Kier
Burt appears at Irving’s house and reads his notes on Lumon, in which he describes the company as violent and dangerous. Without much explanation, he drives him to a train station and tells him to leave Kier and never return.
The conversation between the two is ambiguous but suggests that Irving’s Innie wants to remember her relationship with Burt, while the latter insists that it is better to forget. Does this imply that there is a mechanism that erases memories when leaving Kier? Or is it just Burt’s way to protect Irving, knowing he’s in danger? In episode 6 we already saw that Burt works with Drummond, leaving open the possibility that his real goal is to protect Irving from being killed by Fields.

There is only one chapter left for the end of the second season of Severance and the writers have had to put all the meat on the grill before the closing of this second round of episodes. After two episodes focused on a few characters and detached from the main plot, the rhythm has suffered and it seems that they have had to hit the gas, which does not mean that the plot is not interesting. The summary of “The After Hours”, the title of this ninth chapter, focuses on farewells. There are at least three characters that seem to disappear from the series. The first of them is the Huang girl, which is revealed as one more Kier scholarship, as is Harmony Cobel. She is expelled by Milchick, who has wanted her assistant since she read the Lumon board sanction report. For his part, Milchick challenges the first time to his superiors after all the little drops that have been filling the glass: the report on his way of using the words, the enormous pressure to which he is subjected, the fact of giving him a portrait of black Kier Eagan … We will see what place the director of the separate plant occupies after his confrontation with Lumon. Maybe another ally of Mark? The second of them is Irving.
Who was going to tell us that Christopher Walken and John Turturro, two of the best actors in the history of cinema, were going to share a scene in a television series? It turns out that Irving was spying on Lumon (why is not very clear) and the company has caught him, so they send Burt, a kind of company hitman to take him to them. Crassus error, because, as in that jewel called Forget about me, true love does not understand by heart. This is the only way to explain why the romance between Burt and Irving’s Dentri is reborn in its strong version. Burt decides “to save him” by sending him on a train with a one-way ticket to no one knows where. The third of them is Dylan. As with Miss Huang, the original adventure between husband and wife has been hastily resolved after two chapters that have broken the original rhythm of the season. The woman, after confessing it to the outer Dylan, destroys the heart of the inner version. Again, Lumon workers are not treated as complete people. Dylan decides to resign from Lumon, leaving the elevator for a fatal destination.
As for Helly, we see their jurisdiction and antagonist having breakfast with their father, in which it is shown that they have a relationship in which there is everything but love and that Helena is probably pregnant (that of the raw egg …). Is it from Mark? It would be an explanation for James Eagan, Helena’s father, showing up on a separate floor in front of a Helly trying to find out where the black hallway Irving drew is. Finally, Mark and Devon meet with Harmony Cobel. Together they go to the delivery cabin, where it seems that James Eagan is dedicated to reproducing with different women. In that cabin, we will attend the interrogation of Cobel and Devon at Mark’s Dentri. The ninth chapter of Severance is passed in a sign and contrasts, for the worse, with the two previous chapters. It tastes bad to say it, but the eighth chapter hurt the rhythm too much and that shows in an episode that goes so fast that it does not give time to assimilate many of the events that happen. Hopefully, the ending compensates for this narrative roller coaster.
Dylan Quits Lumon
Dylan receives shocking news: Gretchen, his partner, confesses that he had an “adventure” with his version Innie. Feeling betrayed, Dylan’s Outie threatens to give up Lumon, which would mean eliminating his Innie. When Gretchen meets Innie Dylan in the visiting room, she tells him the truth and makes it clear that they cannot continue together. Innie Dylan, in a desperate attempt, proposes to her a ring made of pencil shavings, but Gretchen rejects it. This leads Dylan to feel empty and submit his resignation. However, we don’t know if Lumon will accept his departure or if Milchick has other plans for him.

Has Helly Sabotaged Jame Eagan?
During the episode, Helly tries to figure out the location of the Exports hall, using the notes Irving left her. But his search is interrupted when James Eagan appears and tells him that he has been cheated by“”. Jame’s anger suggests that the Outie version of Helly (Helena) has done something in the real world that has jeopardized Lumon’s plans. It could be his relationship with Mark or a possible betrayal of the company’s expansion plans. In addition, she mentions that “her eggs have been fertilized”, a phrase that seems to have a double meaning, implying that Helly could be pregnant. If this is true, and the son he expects is from Mark, it could pose a threat to Lumon and Jame. Could you force her to abort? Or use the child as part of his control over it?
Is Mark Harmony’s son? One of the episode’s most disturbing moments occurs when Harmony takes Mark to the Damona Birth Retreat. There, when questioned about his presence, Harmony points to Devon and says he is bringing “one of the many pregnant women by Jame”. Although Devon is not pregnant with Jame, this statement opens up the possibility that Mark is. If Harmony has lied on other occasions to protect him, could he be implying that Mark is actually Jame’s son? This would explain why Lumon has been so interested in him and his connection to Gemma.

The Mystery of Gemma and the Future of Mark
The episode ends with Mark managing to enter Lumon to find Gemma. But if Cold Harbor is complete, Gemma’s identity as Miss Casey will be permanently erased. This means that Mark is against the clock to save her before it is too late. Furthermore, Milchick, who until now has been a faithful servant of the company, seems to have reached his limit. Her confrontation with Drummond suggests that she might be ready to rebel, which could change the game in the final episode.
Conclusion of The After Hours
Severance episode 9 leaves many questions open and paves the way for a season finale that could redefine the series. Irving’s escape, Dylan’s resignation, Helly’s possible betrayal, and the truth about Mark and his relationship with Jame Eagan could be key in solving the story. Although the series has had ups and downs this season, the ninth episode manages to maintain suspense and leave the viewer with the feeling that the outcome will be decisive for the future of the protagonists.
