Family drama has been a very important part of Bollywood. In this list, the name of Kaashvie Nair’s film ‘Sardar Ka Grandson’ has also been added. This heart touching film may not fit much in today’s places, but yes it will definitely connect people with relationships. Arjun Kapoor, Rakul Preet Singh, Nina Gupta, John Abraham and Aditi Rao Hydari will surely pull you towards themselves with a stunning ensemble of actors. It is true that this film could have become an all-time classic in the hands of an experienced director, but Kaashvie would have to praise that she put a difficult subject in front of the audience with great ease. ‘Sardar’s Grandson’, as the name suggests, is about the love of a family and it shows that sometimes fulfilling the needs of one becomes the necessity of the life of the other.
Story and Script Analysis
The story of Kaashvie’s film is unique. The 2-hour-20-minute film begins with Amrik (Arjun Kapoor) and his fiancé Radha (Rakul Preet Singh), who runs a business of movers and packers in the US called Gentley Gentley. But soon Amrik’s lack of emotional connection to him leads to a sour relationship between the two. Then both of them separate. Amrik’s heart breaks. After this, Amrik is called back to his hometown Amritsar to fulfill his grandmother Rupinder Kaur’s only wish. Rupinder, whom everyone fondly calls ‘Sardar’ (Nina Gupta), wants to visit her ancestral home in Lahore, Pakistan for the last time.
Sardar along with her husband in Lahore had weaved a lot of dreams. However, the riot turned out to be a killer for his wishes. She runs away from Lahore by tying her baby boy to his chest and taking a bicycle. Across the border, she makes Amritsar her destination and starts a bicycle company. Such a big company that even a small part of it, now being in the will of Sardar can make anyone rich. Sardar has only one wish that he has to see his house in Lahore before he dies. Amrik tries to fulfill Grandma’s heart. But when Amrik is refused to go to Lahore with Sardar, he decides to take the matter into his own hands. And then the story of India-Pakistan begins. After this Sardar’s grandson decides to bring the ancestral home to Amritsar through structural relocation technique. Adorned with emotions and some heart-touching moments, the film forces Sardar’s grandson to complete his mission as he does not shy away from crossing the boundaries for his grandmother’s love.
Structural Relocation One’s unique concept, which may be present in many parts of the world, may seem a bit strange to an Indian audience. The coming of a lovely story in this difficult time is full of freshness. This time when everyone needs a few moments of laughter. Beyond the fakeness of feelings, and the film is steeped in emotions, the film is shown through a loving grandmother-son relationship.
Star Performances
Performance is A1. When Neena is in the ensemble, then the film automatically comes to life. Neena Gupta is the heroine of the film ‘Sardar Ka Grandson’. 62-year-old Neena Gupta has played the role of a 90-year-old man in a brilliant manner. To look 90 years old, Neena Gupta has to undergo prosthetic makeup, but she looks beautiful in it too. His relationship with the whole family is the real link in the story. His look is as desi as he gets with colorful clips decorated with suits and shawls. As a typical Punjabi grandmother, Nina expresses feelings and touches the film with her heart. The Punjabi touch of his dialect makes this character stronger.
In the character of Amrik, Arjun performs a calm and heart touching performance. She is intelligent, smart but above all she is sensitive to fulfill her grandmother’s last wish. The thing that may bother some of you is his Punjabi accent which seems a bit unnatural at times, but the beauty of Arjun’s character is much more than that. Rakul does his job of giving emotional and mental support to his partner in the film. However, there is not much depth in his character. Aditi Rao Hydari and John Abraham, who play the role of young Nina Gupta and her late husband, bring back memories of the old world of romance. Both of them manage to take the audience completely to their small and lovely world… even with less screen space. Aditi has played the character of a typical Punjaban girl very resolutely. The film’s supporting cast Soni Razdan, Kanwaljeet Singh and Kumud Mishra – do full justice to their characters.
The Last Words
Kaashvie Nair’s direction could have been almost right if a little care was taken of the time. It seems that the film loses its real emotions and excitement due to the length of the film. If the expert Jhaveri had spent a little concession in editing, then according to OTT, this film could have been a bit more agile. Due to the length of the film, some parts seem repetitive and unnecessary. There is a newness in the story written by Anuja Chauhan, Amitosh Nagpal and Kaashvie. Hats off to cinematographer Mahendra Shetty, his camera managed to bring the locations to life. Tanishq Bagchi’s music is incredible and matches the tone of the film. Vijay Ghodke has done commendable work in art direction here and Sheetal Sharma in choosing costumes.
