RRR 2: As awards season approaches, one keeps hearing about the RRR phenomenon, the epic of Indian director SS Rajamouli. In the wake of this success a sequel, RRR 2, appears to be in the works, again with Rajamouli’s father, V. RRR 2: Here What Makers Said About Sequel

Director Rajamouli made a brief speech before the screening of his film in Chicago and confirmed to Variety: “My father is the screenwriter of all my films. We talked a little bit about [‘RRR 2’] and he’s working on the story“. As this is an early stage, no further details have been provided. The director’s father, the director/screenwriter V. Vijayendra Prasad, previously wrote the Baahubali series, which paved the way for international recognition of Telugu cinema by becoming the first Indian film to get five nominations at the Saturn Awards. In the past, he has written some commercially successful films in Bollywood and Tollywood like Salman Khan’s Bajrangi Bhaijaan, Ram Charan’s Magadheera directed by Rajamouli, Jr NTR’s Yamadonga and more. The father-son duo has worked on many projects, successfully co-writing, and given the success of RRR, they may soon be churning out another blockbuster for worldwide audiences.

In RRR, Prasad took the fantastic elements and emotions of Indian epics such as the Ramayana and the Mahabharata and merged them with elements of India’s struggles against colonizers and its path to independence. Set in the 1920s, the film follows real-life Indian freedom fighters Komaram Bheem (Jr NTR) and Alluri Sitarama Raju (Charan), who become best friends surrounded by a common target and enemy. Rajamouli skillfully directs a story full of action and emotion, while keeping the emotional core of the plot intact. Made with a budget of $ 72 million, it easily ranks among the most expensive movies made in India, finished off with incredible VFX, slow-motion action sequences, dance and music numbers and some exceptional sequences.

While the film has done a good job of bringing audiences back to theaters after the pandemic, its unprecedented success can only be attributed to its premiere on Netflix. It garnered unexpected praise and love from non-Hindi or Telugu-speaking fans around the world, who united in the simple pleasure of watching RRR’s show. With multiple premieres around the world, such as in the United States and Japan, the film grossed Rs. 1200cr ($175.47) million at the worldwide box office.
