BEWARE, SPOILER ALERT. Created by Michael and Paul Clarkson, Red Rose is a British series that originally aired on BBC Three and is available on Netflix from February 15, 2023. The 2022 horror drama follows a group of teenagers who, after downloading a strange app, must comply with its demands or face deadly consequences. The fiction begins with Alyssa, a teenager who is tormented by a mysterious presence. When her mother comes home, the young woman throws herself off the roof. The story then turns to Rochelle, Wren, Ashley, Anthony, Noah, and Taz, who celebrate the end of the semester and prepare for the most popular student’s party.

Roche is very calm and confident, but she deals with various personal problems, such as the lack of money in her home, her mother’s suicide, and the responsibility of taking care of her younger sisters. In the midst of all that, she finds Red Rose, an app that promises to fulfill your wishes, so you download it without waiting for anything. However, after following the first prompts, she gets clothes and shoes for the party, so she continues answering the questions the app asks her until she is forced to kiss Noah, which leads to a fight with Wren.

At the center of this story, we find a group of friends from a small village near Manchester, in Northern England. The six boys have just finished their high school exams and are preparing to dive into their last summer before starting university. Among them are best friends Rochelle (Isis Hainsworth) and Wren (Amelia Clarkson), both with a rather difficult family situation behind them: the first has recently lost her mother, who took her own life, the second has a father former prisoner with whom he is – secretly – rebuilding a relationship. Things haven’t been going well between Wren and Roch lately, since the first started a relationship with their friend Noah (Harry Redding), the other feels excluded and set aside.

It will be in a moment of great despair that Rochelle downloads a mysterious application, Red Rose. Initially, the strange app seemed like a gift sent from heaven. It helps her get small victories and revenge in everyday life. Over time, however, he shows a decidedly more sinister side, putting her in contact with what appears to be the spirit of her deceased mother and insinuating herself into her daily life: through her smartphone, Red Rose has access to all her contacts, social media, her memories, and can destroy all his certainties from within. Her friends, after an initial estrangement, will intervene to help her, but it could be too late by now…

Plagued by threats, Rochelle tries to turn the tide, but something sinister is at stake. The app uses her mother’s voice to manipulate her, sending messages to her friends, blocking messages and calls from her group known as the “Dickheads” and making posts that only create more conflict. Roch tries to explain to Wren what is happening, but her friend doesn’t believe him, so she decides to go to a church and use holy water to ward off the sinister presence that is stalking her. Although she seems to make it and she goes home calmly, her phone rings again when she is taking a bath, and shortly after she turns up dead.

Wren refuses to believe that it was a suicide and decides to find out what happened to her friend. After the funeral, he receives a supposed message from Roch with the link to download Red Rose and despite the danger, install it and follow the instructions of the application. A disturbing message sends Wren and his friends to Manchester in search of more clues, only to discover that a teenager named Alyssa has died under similar circumstances. Meanwhile, the app haunts Wren with his father’s past and causes family conflicts. The Dickheads realize that to discover the truth they need Jaya, who knows about computers and although she did not have a good relationship with Roch, she agrees to help them and begins investigating the death of a member of her coding club, Jacob, since it seems to be related. with Alyssa and Roch.

Who Created Red Rose?

Jacob developed Red Rose to get closer to Alyssia, a classmate he had a crush on. Because he was very shy, he preferred to use the app to spy on Alyssa with the help of some dark web friends. After the creator is forced to confess his feelings and is rejected, someone called “The Gardener” appears and offers him support. Approaching Jacob, the Gardener takes over the app, makes various modifications, and begins tormenting Alyssa to the point of killing herself. When Jacob realizes everything, he tries to regain control, but The Gardener kills him and together with a group of sadists, they look for more victims to torment.

Who is the Gardener?

After Simon’s downfall, it seems the worst is over, but Jaya discovers that the Red Rose is actually a website and that the Gardener is still after them. Although they try to kill her, Jaya escapes the fire and returns to help her friends when they need her most. The gardener kidnaps Rick so his daughter Wren can go looking for him. While the rest escape her pursuers, the young woman confronts the person behind it all. To get him to attack him, the sadistic man stabs his father, and Wren beats him to death. When the police show up Rick takes the blame.

But Red Rose‘s group can’t see anything because Jaya manages to take down the website. However, before she can meet up with her friends, the woman who kidnapped Noah shows up, suggests that she is the real Gardener, and warns that you can’t erase an idea. Is the gardener a group of people who enjoy torturing others on the dark web? Red Rose ends with the protagonists visiting the grave of Roch, who, by the way, did not commit suicide and was killed by one of the members of the twisted group.
