The Red Notice that gives the title to the new Netflix Original film written and directed by Rawson Marshall Thurber (Dodgeball, Skyscraper) is the highest level of international warning warrant issued by INTERPOL, reserved for the most wanted criminals in the world. It is explained directly at the opening, before the curtain opens on Castel Sant’Angelo in Rome, where the skilled thief Nolan Booth (Ryan Reynolds) is about to steal one of the three precious Cleopatra’s Eggs. Informed of the hit by the mysterious Bishop, FBI profiler John Hartley (Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson) travels to the Eternal City with INTERPOL Inspector Das to intercept Booth and prevent the theft, but things take a decisive turn. unexpected.
Red Notice Review: The Story
John Hartley (Dwayne Johnson) is the FBI’s greatest profiler, although physically it would not appear. Now he is grappling with a new red notice, Interpol’s mandate to capture the major fugitives. Thus he arrives in Rome where, during a robbery, he meets the greatest art thief in the world, Nolan Booth (Ryan Reynolds). The two, for a series of fortuitous (or not?) Events, find themselves working together to capture the most sought-after thief of artistic works in the world, (Gal Gadot). The three, always together – or almost – in spite of themselves, will find themselves around the globe between dance floors, isolated prisons and wild jungles.
Red Notice is a film that lives on these three characters and their continuous changes of field, or, if you prefer, their movement on the table, as in the three-card game, operated by the narrator, deus ex machina who uses his pawns to displace them and above all to constantly displace and confuse the viewer, in a classic formula of entertainment films, and especially typical of the heist movie, where alliances and betrayals are often the salt of the story, together with the robbery itself. As in the classic heist movies, the robbery is often visualized first, and then implemented.
The three cards are theirs. Nolan Booth is Ryan Reynolds, elegant, smiling and slightly and constantly over the top like Roger Moore’s James Bond, and here he is very elegant in a white tuxedo. Gal Gadot is very elegant and sexy, feline and ironic as you’ve never seen her before. In that red dress, with a very deep neckline and slit, she manages to move and be perfectly at ease, and to throw flying kicks worthy of Bruce Lee with an innate grace. That child’s face, then, allows her to play on different registers, and to use irony much more than in the Wonder Woman movies. She is always a bit of Wonder Woman, a bit of a thief, a bit of a character who emerged – in all her elegant dresses – from a sophisticated comedy of the 1940s. Rounding out the trio is Dwayne Johnson , (who with director Rawson Marshall Thurber had already starred in the more serious Skyscraper ), an actor who has managed to go beyond his physique, and always give something more to his characters, through irony and that sense of always being a little out of place, but basically in the right place.
Red Notice Review and Analysis
The relationship and the dialogues between The Rock and Reynolds are hilarious able to take into account their respective acting skills, their times, the different applications on stage, and this is also thanks to the alchemy between the two and the very enjoyable performances. To underline also the best competence of Gal Gadot in a role that does not require depth of any kind but with a strong characterization.
In short, looking at Indiana Jones and all that action-adventure panorama of which the cinema and videogame market is now saturated, as well as taking up some structural elements from the aforementioned Fast & Furious, Red Notice succeeds in the task of thrilling and entertaining without particular ambitions. It is muscular and instant cinema, which fills the stomach without giving who knows what emotion, only appetizing and to be swallowed as it comes, irresistible and delicious in its total simplicity.
The charm of seeing ‘The Rock’ Dwayne Johnson, ‘Freyguy’ Ryan Reynolds and ‘Wonder Woman’ Gail Gadot together for the first time on screen is what has helped ‘Red Notice’ cross the line. There is nothing special in the story of the film or its screenplay or its dialogues that if you are a regular buff of Hollywood movies, you will find it new. In a way, it is such a film cocktail made by gathering the scenes, sequences and sensations of all the hit films, which despite knowing everything about it, wants to keep watching. In this film you will also get a glimpse of ‘National Treasure’, it also has ‘Mission Impossible’ and by the end, ‘Indiana Jones’ also joins it. Despite this weak link of the film, director Rawson Marshall Thurber managed to make the film ‘Red Notice’ a good film, so its stunt director, special effects supervisors and music director have a big hand in it.
And, the only reason for millions of viewers to watch the film ‘Red Notice’ is also its heroine Gail Gadot. The arrival of this Wonder Woman on the screen, the full price of the film is recovered. That’s a hoax. She is such an illusionist who dreams of stealing her heart as well as all the wealth with eyes in her eyes, which keeps everyone in awe throughout the film and then what happens in the climax is a different kind of unique surprise. The film ends here by laying the seeds of its sequel.
The Last Words
Red Notice is the perfect and essential synthesis of Rawson Marshall Thurber’s cinema, as well as an adequate measure of Netflix’s average quality production. A muscular and wandering action-thriller that lives its peak not so much in gender exaggeration as in the heist movie aspect and in the comedy, in the relationships and dialogues between two hilarious The Rock and Ryan Reynolds, but also in the more “bad” dimension “given to Gal Gadot, splendid and combative in the role of the Bishop. A title that lacks nothing (melee, chases, shootings, twists) but of which nothing remains, like a dish capable of filling the stomach and to be savored voraciously but without refined flavor, without impact, yet irresistible in its total simplicity.
