Rebel Moon Part 2 – The Scargiver: Will This Part Revive the Saga From the Big Flop?

Less than a week after the arrival of Rebel Moon Part One- A Child of Fire, the teaser for Rebel Moon Part 2 – The Scargiver has arrived. Landing on Netflix on December 22, Zack Snyder‘s latest film effort does not seem to have fully convinced the director’s fans. The feature film, which tells the story of the rebel warrior Kora, continues to have strong viewing figures (so much so that in the first four days of distribution it reached the top of the top ten most watched programs in 62 countries) was panned by criticized for several structural shortcomings. Netflix immediately tried to take action by publishing a preview of the second part in record time which, however, should be released no earlier than April 2024.

From Zack Snyder, the filmmaker of 300, Man of Steel, and Army of the Dead, Rebel Moon arrives on Netflix, an epic event between science and fantasy that took decades of work to create. It is a science fiction saga consisting of two films, the first scheduled to debut on Netflix on December 22, 2023, and the second scheduled for next year. But what do we know about the second part of Rebel Moon? And above all, when will it come out? One thing is certain, the title of the second part of this sci-fi saga by Snider is The Scargiver and will be released in spring 2024. But let’s find out when specifically, and what we should expect.

What Rebel Moon Part One- A Child of Fire About

Kora, a young woman with a mysterious and dark past, lives among the farmers of the planet Veldt. Her home is one of the many peaceful lands that dream of independence from the Mother Planet but the serenity and quiet of her home risks being jeopardized by the arrival of an army of extremists coming from the great power. Captaining the soldiers is Admiral Atticus Noble who seems to have no mercy for anyone. Kora then decides to undertake an intergalactic journey in stages to gather a group of rebel warriors who can help her people fight back. She will manage, together with her friend Gunnar, to put together a small army made up of Kai, Tarak, Titus, and Nemesis, but there will be difficulties.

Rebel Moon Part 2 – The Scargiver: The Plot

The second film in the Rebel Moon saga will pick up the story where it left off at the end of the first film. We are in an imaginary galaxy and the armies of the tyrannical Regent Balisarius threaten a peaceful settlement on a moon at the edge of the universe. Here the mysterious foreigner Kora (Sofia Boutella) becomes the only hope of survival and is tasked with finding skilled fighters to face with her the impossible task of fighting such a powerful opponent. Kora gathers a handful of warriors into a small band made up of outcasts, rebels, farmers, and war orphans from numerous planets and united by a great desire to redeem themselves and take revenge. While the dark shadow of an entire empire looms over the moon that least expects it, a new army of heroes takes shape.

The Accusations Against Netflix

Among the major criticisms that have been leveled at Rebel Moon Part One- A Child of Fire, there is that of being a “crippled” film. It seems that the story told by Snyder is boring and repetitive, at times edited excessively quickly. Fans have even accused Netflix of “greed” because the one released online on December 22nd is a non-complete version of the film. The complete one, a much longer director’s cut, contains crude and violent scenes that make work forbidden to children under 17. In the US, even the cropped version is not visible to audiences under the age of 13.

It also seems that the film available on streaming focuses little on the characterization of the characters, except for Kora who is dedicated to a long slow-motion flashback (the director’s trademark). All the knots to be untied have been partially revealed but postponed to the second chapter which should be released on April 19, 2024 on Netflix and this makes the first part of the work not a bad film, but a feature film that never reaches the climax of the story.

Rebel Moon Part 2 – The Scargiver: The New Chapter

And if everything takes place in the second part, what do we know, for the moment, about the sequel? In part 2, which has the subtitle The Scargiver (an epithet that refers to the main character), you will certainly enter the heart of the battle. The people of Veldt are finally ready to fight for independence, and the planet has become a new homeland for those who lost theirs in the fight against Mother World. The warriors gathered by Kora prepare to sacrifice everything to stand beside the farmers and face the realities of their pasts, revealing the true reason why each fight. New bonds are created between the protagonists and the war will continue with no holds barred. The two parts of the saga, in which the warrior Kora is the protagonist, were filmed simultaneously starting in April 2022 in California and the overall budget of the project reached 166 million dollars.

The Connections with Star Wars

What will be distributed on Netflix starting in April 2024 may not even be the final chapter of the saga. In the beginning, Zack Snyder‘s idea was to make a trilogy. A detail not to be underestimated because it links the events of Kora and his planet to the Star Wars Universe. The Rebel Moon project was born as a film linked to Star Wars inspired by Akira Kurosawa’s films. The acquisition of Lucasfilm by Disney has, however, made the creation of the works independent, which have become a cinematographic reality in their own right. However, in the film already published, the references to Star Wars are quite evident and it is to be expected that in the second part, during the battle phase, the inspiration could be even greater.
