Reacher Season 3 Episode 1 Ending Explained: What is Jack’s Mission?

The story jumps into the past to show us how Jack ended up involved in this mission. Days before, while avoiding a shoplifting robbery, she saw a known man getting into a car and decided to track him down. He contacted a former partner in the 110th Military Police Battalion, Powell, to track the license plate of the car, but did not get results. However, his search caught the DEA’s attention. Susan Duffy, Guillermo Villanueva, and Steven Elliot, DEA agents, appear at their hotel and explain that they are investigating Zachary Beck, as they suspect that his carpet company is a cover for drug trafficking. A major Los Angeles drug dealer has met with Beck, but they have been unable to collect sufficient evidence, as his home and business are virtually invisible. Jack, even without revealing his true mission, agrees to help them in exchange for information about a person he has been searching for some time: Francis Xavier Quinn.

Who’s Quinn, and Why is Reacher Looking for Him?

According to Duffy, the person Jack was looking for actually survived an assassination attempt in 2012. Although he was shot in the head and thrown into the water to drown, low temperatures prevented him from bleeding to death. He was rescued and spent months in recovery, without remembering who he was… or at least he claimed to. Jack confirms that this man is Lt. Francis Xavier Quinn, a former Military Intelligence member who betrayed his country by selling classified information. Jack and his 110th team tried to catch him, but Quinn escaped. Now that he knows he’s still alive, Reacher is determined to finish what he started years ago. Duffy accepts the deal but asks for an additional favor: infiltrating Beck’s operation to find a missing informant, Theresa, who infiltrated Bizarre Bazaar and never gave any signs of life again.

How Did the DEA and Reacher Mount the Fake Kidnapping?

The entire scene of Richard Beck’s kidnapping turns out to be a trap planned by the DEA and Reacher to gain the young man’s trust and thus infiltrate his father’s mansion. These were the key steps of the farce:

  • Guillermo Villanueva, the DEA agent, pretended to be the police officer Jack shot. False blood charges were used to make his “death” credible.
  • Steven Elliot, another agent, played the kidnapper, who was “killed ” by Reacher.
  • The flashbang in the car served to stun the driver and make the kidnapping more credible.
  • The vinyl Reacher sold was an accessory to justify his presence on-site and give more authenticity to his story.
  • Jack’s stolen car and flight were prepared in advance to ensure that Richard would take him to his father’s house and thus reveal his location to the DEA.

It all went perfectly, and now Reacher has 14 days to figure out what’s going on inside Beck’s business, whether Theresa is still alive, and how Quinn fits into all of this.

What Does Reacher Discover in the Beck’s Mansion?

Once inside the house, Reacher begins to tie the dots. Note that Duke, one of the guards, eats his food outside, making him suspect that he is secretly delivering food to someone. Later, Reacher returns to the mansion’s cellar and finds a hidden hatch that takes him to a basement. There, he discovers a mattress, food scraps, and an earring. This confirms that someone was held captive there. If Theresa is still alive, her time is running out.
