Peaky Blinders Spinoff: Netflix Surprisingly Announces the Return of the Series
Netflix has just surprised us by announcing the return of Peaky Blinders, the excellent series starring Cillian Murphy. Be careful though, this does not mean that the streaming platform is preparing season 7 of the series or that it has appropriated the film, which has been in the works for some time now. As Bloomberg revealed, Netflix just announced that it will make a prequel and an official sequel! Specifically, Netflix is already working on a sequel set a couple of decades after the events narrated in the main series, however with a change of scenario, since the story of the series will be set in Boston. The universe created by Steven Knight is no stranger to the United States, but it remains to be seen what exactly the link between the two proposals will be.
A new era of streaming is about to begin in which Netflix will dominate, exploiting the many intellectual properties in its possession. This was reported by “Bloomberg” which specifically talks about a new “Franchise Era” of streaming led by the queen platform. Leading this revolution could be the most successful show in the history of Netflix, Wednesday, with over 250 million views. The second season is about to be produced, with Jenna Ortega ready to return as the protagonist, but they are already thinking about a potential spin-off dedicated to another iconic Addams Family character, Uncle Fester. There are still no guarantees on the start of the project which could only be the first of a series of projects dedicated to the franchise.
Peaky Blinders Spinoff is Coming
There would be countless sequels, prequels, and spin-offs under evaluation by the big N studios, including a series based on the action film Extraction and two spin-offs of the hugely popular series Peaky Blinders, with Cillian Murphy already a star of the awards season thanks to his role in Oppenheimer. One series would be set in Boston during the mid-20th century, a couple of decades after the original Peaky Blinders, while the other would focus on Polly, the matriarch of the Shelby crime clan. This new production mentality of Netflix aligns perfectly with what historical television and film studios are creating, such as HBO with its parallel projects dedicated to Game of Thrones, Sex and the City, Dune, and IT; Showtime with spin-offs of Billions, Ray Donovan, and Dexter; AMC which has already made the spinoff of Breaking Bad (Better Call Saul ) and is working on The Walking Dead; and, obviously, Disney, which after having created the concept of “cinematic universe”, is thinking of a new version of The X-Files.
What happened with the casts – which quickly became very expensive – of Stranger Things and Sex Education, teaches us that it will be difficult to imagine many seasons with rising star Jenna Ortega as Wednesday. In an era in which few series have a long duration – also due to the increase in production costs to pursue higher quality standards, spin-offs, and prequels have become an important way to extend success. As far as the film is concerned, the situation is rather unclear. At the moment it is not clear how its production is going, just as we know practically nothing about its plot or cast. It makes sense that Murphy would return to the now-legendary character of Tommy Shelby, but that is yet to be confirmed.
