Ozark Season 4 Part 2 Ending Explained: Is Byrde Family Free?

At the end of Ozark Season 4 Part 2, everything seems to be going incredibly well. The Byrdes are on the home stretch out of the drug business, having passed the reins of laundering Missouri Belle to Ruth and Rachel. Legally, of course, the FBI gave him the green light, under the guise of a cooperating witness. But it wouldn’t be Ozark if it weren’t for a few more twists. While raising money for the foundation, Camila feels that the Byrdes and Clare know more than they let on about her son’s death. The Byrdes remain calm and quiet, but a small mention of a wanton death and Clare reveals that it was Ruth who was responsible.

Camila orders her henchman to kill the Byrde children if Ruth is warned of what is coming. Despite their obvious anguish they keep calm and continue on their way while the formidable Ruth Langmore is shot by Camila at the side of the road. A bitter end to their dysfunctional pseudo-family relationship. This note rings loudly throughout the final act of Ozark, but in true Ozark tradition, there is one final stab for the Byrdes. Remember Mel Sattem, the disgraced cop-turned-PI who desperately wanted to prove the Byrdes killed Ben?

Wendy and Marty pulled the strings to get her back to her job as a police officer in exchange for dropping the Ben case. She initially agreed, but her moral compass apparently continued to point north. She returns to Missouri and confronts the Byrdes with proof that Ben is dead and not missing. Their delicate house of cards is about to come crashing down when Jonah pulls out a gun and shoots Mel. Yes, little Jonah Byrde, who hates this life, kills Mel, thus sealing his own fate.

When Wendy finally lets go, offering him and Charlotte freedom, her murderous act traps him in the life she wanted to save him from. Marty and Wendy Byrde may have gotten the freedom they were looking for, but this act is a reminder that their wrongdoings have had and continue to have an impact on what they valued above all else: their children. We think they call it poetic justice.

At the end of season 3 we were asking ourselves a lot of questions. Like, for example: What is Ruth going to do with Darlene? Javier has fixed Ruth’s foundation problem with Darlene. So the question now is: What is Ruth going to do with Wendy? About killing Ben, I mean. That has to explode somewhere at some point. What does the future hold for Jonah and Charlotte? The series has left that up in the air. Jonah seems to be more and more distant from his parents, while Charlotte (Sofia Hublitz) who seemed to be closer to him begins to have doubts. Jonah is not going to forgive his mother for the cartel killing Ben. And yet all is peace and harmony

But most important of all: What will happen to the Byrde couple at the end of the series? Wendy is the only one who has a chance of surviving. She was always prepared to survive and she is a well-calibrated machine of cynicism. If everything ends (like the Rosario de la Aurora), will Marty and Wendy still be together? Or will she be the only one left by virtue of a bullet lodged in Marty’s brain? We still don’t know what they’re willing to do for each other, how much these people would risk for each other: Would Marty let Wendy die? Would Wendy let Marty die? Wendy let her own brother be killed… Although maybe that’s not the question. Now that Ruth is in vendetta mode: Would Marty let Wendy kill Ruth? And vice versa? Would Wendy allow Ruth to kill Marty, given the guilt she already feels for her and her apparent belief that Marty is the cause of everyone’s problems in the first place?

Is Omar Navarro Dead?

Omar Navarro spends most of Season 4 in prison as the cartel spirals out of control. Meanwhile, Navarro still thinks he will soon be sent back to Mexico and regain his freedom. This is why he gladly accepts when the order is given to him to be transferred. However, in the route to his new prison, on Camila’s orders and with the knowledge of the Byrdes, Navarro is shot.

The policeman who killed him then claims to have survived a struggle with Navarro. With Omar’s death, Marty essentially loses all authority in the Navarro Cartel, which he had thanks to the former boss’s blessing. Despite all his outbursts and ruthlessness, Omar Navarro is a relatively balanced leader. This is why Marty and Wendy were able to advise and direct him in their mutual interest. Their only consolation is the letter from the FBI which saves them from legal proceedings. However, nothing seems to be able to protect them from Navarro’s replacement, Camila.

Is Mel Sattem Dead?

The final episode ends with Jonah pointing a gun at Mel Sattem just after the latter threatens to reveal a dark family secret. At the end of season 4, he confronts Marty with his discovery, opening up a whole new Pandora’s box for the family. Just then, Jonah walks up with the gun, and though we can’t see him, a gunshot is heard as the season finale fades into black. So it’s clear that Jonah shot well. Also, Jonah is a good shooter and is highly unlikely to miss. So, for all intents and purposes, Jonah shoots and kills Mel Sattem.

This is how Jonah is responsible for the death of Mel Sattem, ending the investigation into Ben’s death and eliminating any chance of its perpetrators being discovered. Young Byrde showed signs of prolific criminal skill and instincts, not to mention his skill with firearms. In the past, he’s even surpassed some of Marty’s technical prowess. Now, by quickly killing a witness who threatens the family, Jonah also proves that he may be the most ruthless of the family’s criminals.

Is Ruth Dead?

At the end of season 4, Camila Elizonndro is falsely bloodthirsty and bullies Clare Shaw into finally revealing that Ruth killed Javi. Marty and Wendy Byrde watch in horrified silence, unable to reveal that they were involved in Javi’s murder. So, Camila confronts Ruth near the end of the series finale and shoots her down. The Cartel boss personally goes to Ruth’s farm to carry out the murder, and since Camila wants to avenge her son, she makes sure that Ruth is really dead.

Thus, Ruth is shot in the chest and is seen dead on the ground. The aftermath of her murder is not depicted, and we only see Marty and Wendy Byrde walking home in silence knowing that Ruth is going to be killed. Ruth’s death makes it clear that tragedy follows the Byrdes wherever they go. Ruth ‘s death is largely responsible for the ominous and dark message of the Ozark series finale.

Is Nelson Dead?

Nelson is a hardcore assassin whose loyalty is firmly tied to the head of the Navarro Cartel. He quickly turned the weapon on former allies whenever his superior ordered. When Ruth takes over the Mississippi Belle casino and no longer lets Marty use it to launder cartel money, she becomes an enemy of the cartel. So, Nelson soon shows up at the Langmores’ trailer park. But unbeknownst to Nelson, Ruth is waiting for him at home. Knowing that he wants to hurt her, Ruth has Nelson killed. She then buries her body in the foundations of the new swimming pool she has built thanks to the important legacy of Darlene Snell.

Nelson’s death angers Navarro, who is already seeking to secure his position as leader of the cartel. However, the cartel leader blames his hitman ‘s death on Camila, realizing she resents his position. However, Nelson is shot by Rachel, but his death can be attributed mostly to Ruth. In a way, it’s only fitting that Ruth should be responsible for Nelson’s death, because she never forgave him for killing Ben.
