Nimona: Netflix Saves The Canceled Disney Adaptation And Announces An Animated Film With A Stellar Cast Of Voice Actors
Netflix has patched it up, saving the animated adaptation of Nimona, the hugely popular comic by ND Stevenson. This was announced by Stevenson, who on Twitter shared the joy of saving the project, underlining how “Nimona is a fighter, but this time some fantastic people fought for her”.
After losing hope of seeing an adaptation of the story, Nimona becomes an animated film, thanks to a co-production by Annapurna and Netflix. Production has already started at the beginning of the year and there is already a release date: 2023.
The First Details And Voice Actors Of The Film Nimona
The surprises don’t stop there for fans of this title that blends fantasy, comedy and queerness a true best seller hugely popular with younger readers. Netflix has in fact announced the three performers who will voice the trio of protagonists of the story. Actress Chloë Grace Moretz (Sils Maria, Kick Ass) has been confirmed as the voice of the protagonist Nimona, while Riz Ahmed (fresh Oscar winner) will be Ballister Boldheart. the role of Ambrosius Goldenlion will be Eugene Lee Yang, a small star of the YouTube scene. The animated film will be directed by Nick Bruno and Troy Quane.
The animated adaptation of Nimona had already been announced 7 years ago, in 2015, when 20th Century Fox had acquired the rights to the work and entrusted the Blue Sky studio with the task of making it. After the acquisition of Fox by Disney, the project had encountered difficulties, until the closure of Blue Sky Studios by the House of the Rat and the official cancellation of the project.
A highly criticized decision: Nimona is in fact a story with queer nuances and the Disney cancellation occurred in conjunction with an attempt to reposition Walt’s media empire in a more conservative key, complete with support for some legislative initiatives judged homophobic by the public and of the same insiders.
