After the huge success of Squid Game, the focus on Netflix’s Korean series has (rightly) increased. My Name debuts today October 15, 2021 on Netflix offering – it should be specified immediately – a type of entertainment different from that of Squid Game. The story told is that of a 17-year-old who witnesses the murder of her father by a man whose face she cannot see. The girl Yoon Ji-woo knows that her father Do Gang-jae is wanted by the police to be affiliated with the criminal organization headed by Choi Moo-jin, who owns 90% of the drug dealing in the country in which he operates. So Ji-woo seeks help within the latter’s criminal organization – called Dongcheonpa – where she is taken under the protective wing of the boss.

My Name Review: The Story

After a very hard first training at Dongcheonpa Ji-woo – at the suggestion of Moo-jin – he becomes a member of the narcotics department in the police department. All this because Moo-jin – showing the murder weapon to Ji-woo – told her that her father was killed by a policeman. In My Name there is certainly no lack of thriller elements, moments of tension and above all the now classic hand-to-hand fights of Korean action full of blood, on the verge of splatter.

Netflix’s Korean show is a crime drama based on the personal revenge of its protagonist who – unlike most girls her age – forgoes light-heartedness and youth to pursue her aim of revenge. Her life therefore has only one purpose and this risks erasing her human component forever, leaving her to live like a “monster”. Since the murder of her father, 5 years pass before Ji-woo can really start looking for the killer that she herself promised to kill with her own hands.

Each episode has a duration of about 50 minutes and each of them offers no stop to the viewer: chases, action scenes, murders and dialogues, are all rich and important in order to understand who the killer of Do is Gang-jae. The “crime” part is in fact another important component of the series that will make fans of the genre happy.

The Review and Analysis

Unlike many similar shows, the story seems clear at the beginning as a simple question of revenge but then, episode after episode, the narrative becomes complicated, intertwined to the point of returning to the viewer more reading themes such as that of the relationship between friends, that of family, trust, growth and change. All of these aspects are blended into one really well written series that will keep you hooked for 8 episodes. In particular, the last 3 are a spectacular crescendo of emotions and plots from which it will be difficult to take your eyes off. My Name has all the characteristics of the raw Korean thrillers. For this reason, to watch the series you must have the predisposition to see violence and blood which – it must be emphasized – here, however, always have a meaning and are not staged for aesthetic taste alone. In the midst of so many “blows” there is also a lot of heart: the main characters are treated very well and there is a perfect balance between good and evil that guides the paths of the protagonists.

Han So-hee, who provoked a hot reaction whenever posters, stills, and trailers were released, gave up everything and became a member of the organization to find the culprit who killed her father, and then disassembled as Ji-woo, who became an undercover and infiltrated the police. Another life character was born. Actor Park Hee-soon, who believes and sees, also decomposes into Mujin, the boss of the country’s largest drug gang, and introduces the charm of a three-dimensional character who accepts his friend’s daughter Ji-woo as a member of the organization and infiltrates the police.

Ahn Bo-hyun, who plays the role of ‘Pildo’, the partner of ‘Ji-woo’, is expected to steal the hearts of viewers with a different charm by showing the chemistry between Han So-hee and Masudae as an ace detective of the drug investigation team. In addition, Kim Sang-ho as ‘Ki-ho’, the team leader of the drug investigation team, Lee Hak-joo as ‘Tae-ju’, the right arm of ‘Mu-jin’, and Jang-ryul as ‘Kang-jae’, who will leave a strong presence as a member of the Dongcheon faction. The ensemble and passionate performances of actors that have never been seen anywhere else, fresh and without smoke holes, are the third observation point of ‘My Name’ that should not be missed.
