Munich – The Edge Of War Ending Explained
At the end of Munich – The Edge Of War, Paul has a private conversation with Chamberlain. He tries to convince the British Prime Minister that Hitler is a threat to the whole continent. Chamberlain’s first priority is the safety of his people. If Chamberlain chooses not to sign the peace accord, Hitler will go to war against Czechoslovakia, forcing the French and British to intervene.
Thus, Chamberlain refuses to agree with Paul’s opinion and proceeds to sign the papers of the agreement. Chamberlain takes a precautionary measure by having Hitler sign a joint declaration preventing Britain and Germany from going to war against each other. However, as history has taught us, the peace only lasted a year, and soon the chaos of World War II unleashed by Hitler engulfed the continent. As tragic and unnecessary as the outcome of the Munich Accords was, it gave Britain and her allies a chance to prepare for war.
Is Paul Dead?
Early in his life, Paul was an ardent supporter of Hitler. However, his opinion changes after his former girlfriend, Lenya, falls prey to the Nazi regime’s anti-Jewish sentiments. At the end of Munich – The Edge Of War, Paul finds a moment of solitude with the Führer and removes the gun he was carrying.
However, Paul chooses not to kill Hitler because he feels he has no right to. Moreover, his act will be considered an act of cowardice and will have no meaning. He ultimately chose to spare Hitler. When Paul leaves Hitler’s office, he prepares for punishment but learns that Sauer has failed to find proof of Paul’s conspiracy. An associate of Hugh’s retrieved the document safely before Sauer could reach it. Eventually, Paul lives and decides to keep fighting Hitler.
