Mr. & Mrs. Smith Ending Explained: What Happened to John and Jane?
As Mr. & Mrs. Smith progresses, the protagonists realize that they know absolutely nothing about the company that hired them or their policies. When they tell super-high-risk Jane (Parker Posey) and John (Wagner Moura) that they plan to raise enough money to retire, they laugh hysterically. The presence of the other John and Jane and other traps that the HiHi Company set for the main spies suggest that they were paving the way for them to be eliminated for them to eliminate each other. In addition to favoring Jane, they made her believe that John was cheating on her.
After failing three missions in a row, John considers leaving and Jane is given the mission to kill her fake husband. But she refuses to do so and prefers to escape with him. So, HiHi puts his plan B into action: sending the high-risk Jane and John to eliminate the main spies. The high-risk couple chooses to turn them against each other so that they do their job, but it doesn’t work, so they have to intervene directly, just as they did with John and Jane who appear in the first minutes of Mr. & Mrs. Smith.
Towards the finale of Mr. & Mrs. Smith, John and Jane save each other and become a couple again. A couple is sent by the agency to kill them both. In a fight, John is hit and begins to lose a lot of blood. He will die if he doesn’t rush to the hospital immediately, he is aware of this. So he asks Jane to kill him so she can escape. Of course, she refuses to do so. Right at this moment, Jane assures her that she wants to have children with John. Outside the house’s vault, where they have locked themselves away, the agent tasked with killing them is trying to decipher the room’s code. The first season of Mr. & Mrs. Smith ends with Jane opening the vault door ready to kill the woman. It is not known, however, what happens next. It is not clear who shoots who while it is possible to hear three gunshots fired from outside the apartment window. There are three hypotheses:
- Jane kills the intruders and then takes John to the hospital.
- John dies from his wounds, but Jane manages to survive by killing the two assassins.
- Both eventually die.
Why Does the Agency Want to Kill John and Jane?
Among the many missions, John and Jane ultimately fail three of them. After the third failed mission, she is ordered to kill her false husband. When someone tries to do the same to her and kills her cat, Max, she believes that John was given the same order. John and Jane no longer trust each other, so much so that they fight with each other for a long period. But who are the couple’s employers? There is a very dangerous private spy agency behind it and it seems that the goal is to make the hired agents fail and then kill them. The TV series begins with a couple who worked for this agency who were killed. It could also be that the agency decides to eliminate agents when they bond with each other, just like what happened to John and Jane. Not only that, but it is also possible that the agency at a certain point decides to kill the agents to prevent their escape, as they could reveal the secrets of their missions. It is likely that Bev, the person they are supposed to kill in their last mission, is a secret agent.
Do Jon and Jan Smith Survive?
Although the main couple is willing to fight with everything, they have to defeat the other secret agents, they don’t have much of a chance considering they are dealing with professionals who have murdered several Janes and Johns. Despite having everything against them, the protagonists create a distraction and reach the panic room. However, John, like his counterpart, is seriously injured. The couple is safe for the moment, but they don’t have much time left, as John is losing blood and could die if he doesn’t receive medical attention, high-risk Jane is unharmed and determined to find the vault code to complete her mission.
While thinking of a plan, John and Jane have a heart-to-heart talk in which they confess their real names: Michael and Alana, and she agrees to have children. When John asks her to shoot him to create another distraction that will allow him to escape from her, Jane refuses and finally opens the door to kill her rival. At the end of Mr. & Mrs. Smith, only a few shots are heard, but what happened to the two couples Jane and John is not shown, suggesting that the story could continue in a second season.
