Most Anticipated Series Of 2023: Netflix, Prime Video, Disney+, Apple Tv+, Peacock, HBO Max,
What to expect from 2023 in the serial field? Most Anticipated Series of 2023. At the risk of sounding like a slightly exalted Paolo Fox, we aim for a vintage that can be described in one word: unforgettable. And it is not a prediction based on our sensations or some strange divination, but on a year that only in the first part of January has already given us pearls like The Last Of Us (here you can recover our review of The Last Of Us) and the much-discussed Copenhagen Cowboy (and here we refer you to our Copenhagen Cowboy review ), as divisive as any good Refn work should be.
Most Anticipated Series Of 2023
Not only that, digging into Disney+ and Netflix for example, there are already numerous little gems, with others on the horizon ready to surprise us, to take us off guard. We reiterate it’s only January, so there is the real possibility that it’s just preparatory barrels that could submerge us with discrete continuity. Also, on closer inspection, everyone has something to prove, from multibillion-dollar franchises including Star Wars and the MCU- which have just a little something to be forgiven – up to the minor productions which must confirm themselves or show that they are always and in any case on point. Then let the dancing begin, with our list of the most anticipated series which, as usual, distinguishes absolute novelties and products that will return with a new season.
The New Series Arriving In 2023
Secret Invasion (Disney+)
Let’s start with Marvel; yes, we know, we had already placed Secret Invasion in our list of the most anticipated TV series of 2022. We can’t predict every single postponement or fully understand what’s going on in Kevin Feige’s head, although we would love to. The fact remains that the miniseries starring Samuel L. Jackson is potentially one of the MCU’s most complete trump cards.
Because? Because it’s based on one of the best recent crossovers from the Casa Delle Idee, because it has the characteristics to be an extraordinary spy-thriller, because it has what it takes to change the balance on the field, and because it finally puts a figure in the center, that of Nick Fury, always behind the scenes until now. Of course, the recent “exploits” in the Marvel Studios serial world do not let us sleep peacefully, but Secret Invasion was – on paper – an event and must still be such to complete a narrative arc now begun in Captain Marvel.
Ahsoka (Disney+)
Little pop into the other huge Disney property now, then in Ahsoka sees one of the productions capable of taking us into the future of Star Wars. It’s not just the apotheosis of a journey that began in The Clone Wars or that subspecies of Rebel’s sequel that fans have been waiting for 5 years, it’s the culmination of all Dave Filoni’s work and his ideas, which can very simply launch the franchise into a new era or force it to start from scratch, yet again.
And the rumors that follow one another seem to point precisely in an all-in direction, between unpublished galaxies and even changes in the Force. Finally, it is the definitive testing ground for Filoni himself, suspended between brilliant intuitions and rookie mistakes – we talked about it by analyzing the first cracks in Filoni’s management. We only know that the material to create something iconic is there and that characters like Ahsoka, Sabine, and Ezra deserve a bright future, even in live-action.
Poker Face (Peacock)
Still in the post-Glass Onion depression (here you can catch up on our Glass Onion – A Knives Out Mystery review)? No problem, as Rian Johnson is already ready to return to the mystery genre with Poker Face, a series that will debut on Peacock on January 26 – it is not known whether it will be the same date for Italy although the platform is also available here. Do we have to explain why, after the wonderful adventures of Benoit Blanc, we are extremely interested in such a product?
Surely the different mediums and all the numerous difficulties that this challenge entails are not to be taken lightly, just as it will be difficult to get out of the shadow of such a rapidly growing franchise, but Johnson has earned a fair amount of confidence about mysteries. Moreover, he will be joined by Natasha Lyonne, not exactly a rookie, with Poker Face which at the time could not be missing in such a ranking.
Shrinking (Apple Tv+)
Shrinking is a series still a bit shrouded in mystery, yet the combination of Apple TV+ – which when expressed at its best produces masterpieces – and a duo of protagonists of the caliber of Harrison Ford and Jason Segel oozes hope and promise. If we then add an interesting plot, in which a psychologist begins to pour on his patients what he thinks without any type of filter as evidenced by the Shrinking trailer, the wait grows.
And if as the last piece, we remember that this comedy is created by Segel, Bill Lawrence, and Brett Goldstein (Ted Lasso’s Roy Kent), in an environment where comedies thrive, here we are talking about a possible candidate for a series of years. In short, Shrinking has every single piece of the mosaic in the right place to make history and we will be in the front row on January 27, in the hope that the wait has not been in vain and that the constellations have truly aligned.
Citadel (Amazon Prime Video)
The second most expensive TV series in history, as a presentation would already be enough. Not only that, one of the most ambitious projects ever carried out, where the numerous spin-offs already confirmed – set in the most disparate parts of the world – and the mother series aim to create one of the most stratified worlds seen on the small screen. At the helm? The Russo brothers, after the success of The Gray Man (here we refer you to our review of The Gray Man) on Netflix, return to the spy-thriller with a production that on paper borders on madness.
And that perhaps could only really Citadel find a home on Prime Video due to the huge investments behind it. What form these premises will take we cannot know, and it is incredibly difficult to even imagine, but at the same time, it is difficult not to let ourselves be carried away by such an aspiration. Unfortunately, it is one of those series most at risk, at least in our opinion, postponement, but you never know, hope dies last.
Gen V (Amazon Prime Video)
And after The Boys (here we leave you our review of The Boys Season 3) and the animated spin-off Diabolical, could we ever fail to be in total hype for another rib of this ever-expanding franchise?
Not and it could not be otherwise when the premise is essentially a brutal battle royale between young Super bred by Vought in a special institute. What do we expect from Gen V? The answer has never been easier: violence, violence, and yet more violence, with some plot points and the usual incisive writing of the characters we have loved so far. On paper it shouldn’t be an impossible mission and, to be even more honest, it’s one of the series we’d bet on with our eyes closed, although everything is still possible. After 3 seasons of The Boys and Diabolical, however, we’re inclined to believe it a lot.
Masters of The Air (Apple Tv+)
It is a war miniseries produced by Tom Hanks and Steven Spielberg. No, it’s not Band of Brothers. And no, not even The Pacific. But Masters of The Air may be yet another WWII marvel that two legendary names in the world of cinema have put their seal on.
For us, this is enough and we hope that Apple’s production not only does not disappoint expectations but also lives up to the two masterpieces that spiritually preceded it – it is useless to pretend nothing happened, we all know very well that comparison will be wasted. It will be a particularly complex task, as the genre is suffering a small period of physiological stagnation, on the other hand, it must not be easy at all to constantly find new ways to paint such horrors. We have chosen to have faith in an amazing duo and a platform that has rarely disappointed in its memorable appointments.
Beef (Netflix)
Like Pachinko last year (here we refer you to our Pachinko review), we want to close the list with a small bet, which also in this 2023 speaks Korean but on a platform like Netflix which is now very attentive to the panorama of the Far East.
Beef is currently being described as a comedy-drama in which the lives of two people are consumed by a car accident. The premise with enormous potential, a respectable cast starring Steven Yeun and Ali Wong, a genre – that of dramedy – which still has colossal margins of maneuver and evolution; the ingredients to create a winning and surprising mix are all there and our sixth sense tells us that she must be kept an eye on. Will we guess the goose that lays the golden egg for the second year in a row? We would love to; we candidly admit it.
Series Returning in 2023
Loki Season 2 (Disney+)
It is to date, together with WandaVision, the best series made by Marvel Studios and, always together with the adventures of Westview, it is the only one to have had a noteworthy impact on the MCU in general. And yet the second season of Loki (don’t miss our review of Loki) leaves us with a feeling of both agonizing anticipation and high risk because it seems easy to screw everything up.
But it is the series that has given new life and prestige to an iconic character and that has introduced the supervillain of the next phases amazingly, that is, it deserves a discreet injection of confidence. It is also one of those few products that can truly explore at least some of the complex cosmology of the Marvel universe and the bizarre entities that dominate it. Or maybe exploiting the multiverse in creative ways not necessarily related to nostalgia. We’ll just have to wait for this summer on Disney+.
Ted Lasso Season 3 (Apple Tv+)
The comedy that simply showed one of the possible futures of the genre could never be missing from this list (here we refer you to our Ted Lasso Season 2 ending). And could it ever be missing when the third season will be, according to Sudeikis and Goldstein, the ideal closure of a circle? Not even for a dream, here we are talking about a potential 10 on the report card if Ted Lasso confirms himself and closes with a bang.
And we sincerely can’t wait to get back on the football pitches of the Premier League and the fictitious and now legendary AFC Richmond with all its amazing members and loyal fans. We are excited to see how Sudeikis and the company intend to close such a monumental series from many points of view and, if anything, give a small taste of the future – perhaps with some spin-offs. But even here we will have to wait, with the premiere set for an unspecified spring moment on Apple TV+.
The Mandalorian Season 3 (Disney+)
After its excellent second season and subsequent questionable handling due to tremendously important plot pieces inserted into another series, The is at a crossroads: continue with a structure that is perhaps just a little too episodic or changes? In short, to be on the safe side or to evolve further?
Because now there is the story of an entire people to tell, among the most beloved of the Star Wars fanbase, those Mandalorians who never seem to find peace. And that after the sublime journey started in The Clone Wars and continued in Rebels, they have earned the right to a turning point. Will Din Djarin be the key element for this change, or will it be just another transitional task? We focus on the first possibility since the trailer for The Mandalorian Season 3 showed us only Mandalorians in action. After all, March 1st is not that far away.
Arcane Season 2 (Netflix)
Now, theoretically, we still don’t have absolute confirmation of this release, but the point is that we can’t wait any longer for the second season of Arcane (don’t miss our review of Arcane). The debut of the Netflix animated series left us shocked from every point of view: stylistically it is a moving work of art, the characterization of the characters is excellent and always intriguing, and the plot started slowly and then exploded and reached a final resounding.
Arcane is the product that no one expected and that no one would have ever imagined being so well cared for and studied down to the smallest detail, from the settings to the magnificent character design. And now we want more, not only to undermine once and for all the superficial idea that transpositions or videogame-themed productions, in general, must necessarily be mediocre but because we are eager to dive again into that world, into that aesthetic. Riot doesn’t disappoint us and surprises us again.
Succession Season 4 (HBO Max)
Are you ready to continue the exciting saga of the Roy family (here we refer you to our Succession Season 3 ending)? Loaded or not it doesn’t matter, in the spring – at least in the USA – the fourth season of Succession will kick off which, as always, we are sure will not take any discounts or even prisoners.
It is among the best-known entities on this list, after all, we all know what to expect: a family that will continue its civil war for control of the Way star with no holds barred, indeed, doubling the dose of betrayals and desperate attempts to emerge victorious. In a nutshell, the perfect entertainment with a commendable mix of pure drama – which does not end up with melodramatic aspects of a teen drama – and the satisfying sensation of watching an endless game of chess where every single move is unpredictable. What more could you want?
The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel Season 5 (Amazon Prime Video)
For the award-winning Amazon series, essentially a speech similar to that of Succession applies it is such a well-known entity whether we like it or not we know what to expect. Unlike the HBO series, however, The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel has indeed had more than a few stumbles along its lifecycle and the fifth and final season is the perfect opportunity to put everything back in its right place.
We are talking about a concept and a realization – both aesthetically and in terms of comedy and the characterization of the characters – too brilliant to end on a sore note or in any case with a bitter aftertaste, a symptom that not everything possible has been done to bring this series where it deserves, or in the pantheon of seriality. We want to believe one last time in Amy Sherman-Palladino, who has a more unique than rare opportunity in her hands.
You Season 4 (Netflix)
We continue with the trend of linking the positions that follow one another in this list since basically like The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel You too have something to be forgiven (here we refer you to our review of You Season 3). It is a series that goes in circles and has repeated the identical pattern one too many times, but at the same time, it is one of the most popular Netflix productions that still has many arrows in its bow.
In You we see a unique concept divided between wholesome drama devoted to entertainment and the ability to comment on many fake human behaviors that can explode once again. And it is understood that the fourth season arriving – at least the first part – on February 9th is in our opinion the perfect occasion, with a change of setting and in practice a restart. Something special can be created, we are sure of it.
The Witcher Season 3 (Netflix)
It is clear that after the recent decisions, the Netflix series based on the works of Sapkowski will never again receive as objective a response as possible: some will criticize the third season regardless, and those who will attempt an apology by incensing Henry Cavill; we see no further way out. But The Witcher (here you can revisit our review of The Witcher Season 2) is in our eyes a more than valid series that has not yet reached its maximum potential and the next cycle of episodes is decisive in this sense.
The plot is in gear, the elements on the chessboard are in the right place, and the charismatic characters are there and not in disappointing numbers, what else should we expect? It’s time to press the accelerator and offer us a show worthy of Strigo and the cornerstones of the fantasy genre.
