The powers and links with the Egyptian world of Arthur Harrow are introduced to us already in the first episode of Moon Knight, in fact the villain of Ethan Hawke is considered one of the main threats for the superhero of Oscar Isaac. Arthur Harrow is introduced by a disturbing scene in Moon Knight episode 1, in which he performs a ritual involving the introduction of broken glass into the soles of his shoes. This means that he feels pain with every step, but he is also a powerful leader of a sect that pursues the ways of Ammit. Arthur Harrow gets his powers from the Egyptian goddess and judges people on her behalf. Arthur Harrow has a tattoo on his arm representing Ammit ‘s judgment, just like the scales of justice that both Lady Justice and the Greek goddess Dike hold in common depictions.
Moon Knight Episode 1 shows how Arthur’s tattoo works and the dark ceremony he uses to judge his followers. When Arthur holds a person’s hands, Ammit’s power flows through him and he judges whether he is a good or a bad person. If Ammit judges right, the scale tilts in one direction and glows green, if misjudged, the scale tilts the other direction and tinged with red reflecting how Ammit has judged humans throughout their lifetime. Confusedly, Ammit judges his subjects based not only on their past actions but also on future ones. If it is believed that they have done something evil, or that they are capable of something evil in the future, Arthur’s powers allow him to kill that person on the spot by draining his life.
How Arthur Harrow’s Powers Work In Moon Knight
The other aspect of the dark powers comes from the staff that Arthur Harrow carries. The double-headed crocodile handle molded in the image of Ammit is a mysterious artifact that helps give Arthur some of the Egyptian god’s powers. The Moon Knight villain played by Ethan Hawke uses the staff as part of the judgment ritual. Placed in the arms of the person on trial and swings back and forth as judgment comes. Arthur Harrow’s staff is also known to have additional powers that result from its connection with Ammit. The purple glow from Arthur Harrow’s staff seems to suggest the artifact is magical.
Who Is Ammit? Explanation of the Egyptian Goddess
So who is Ammit in the context of Moon Knight and Egyptian mythology? She is an ancient goddess of Egyptian religion known as the Eater of the Dead, the Eater of Hearts and the Great of Death. She is closely associated with the scales of justice in the Egyptian underworld, where she is allowed to devour the hearts of those deemed unclean. It was believed that whoever was eaten by Ammit would spend eternity in torment.
Ammit’s depiction in Moon Knight is mostly like ancient Egyptian legends, although there are some critical changes. The MCU depiction makes Ammit a goddess who judges the past, present and future of a person’s life and instantly kills her if she is considered evil. This not only means that she is directly responsible for the deaths of many, but she also operates somewhat independently of the other Egyptian gods. In ancient Egyptian religion, Ammit devoured souls only after Anubis judged their hearts in the afterlife, with Ma’ at, the goddess of truth, often acting as Ammit’s opposition.
The reason for these differences appears to come from the Egyptian mythology of Moon Knight including Enneade a group of nine super-powerful deities that the museum is promoting. Ammit is not part of the Ennead in the ancient religion, but the goddess was under their supervision. Moon Knight Episode 1 mentions Ammit being betrayed by the other gods and her previous Avatar. It could be that Arthur Harrow and Ammit are operating independently of the other gods due to this betrayal. However, the goddess has also been subdued from the time the Moon Knight events take place.
What Is The Goal Of Arthur Harrow And Ammit
In Moon Knight, Arthur Harrow’s commitment to Ammit and to the fulfillment of the goddess’s plans is quite clear, and there are essentially two different goals. The most urgent target is that of Harrow, who wants to awaken Ammit. He says all of this is happening “before our goddess awakens” indicating that he intends to awaken her somehow. This seems to be why Moon Knight ‘s golden scarab beetle is so coveted. Arthur says it belongs to Ammit and clearly needs it to wake her up, which explains why Khonshu does everything in her power to stop Steven Grant to hand it over. It appears that Arthur Harrow’s goal of awakening Ammit is possible if he is able to acquire the scarab.
But why does Moon Knight ‘s villain want to awaken Ammit? It appears that the Egyptian goddess’s goal is to rid the world of evil on a global scale. Although Ammit’s powers of judgment are currently limited to Arthur Harrow, it is thought that she will eventually have the ability to judge everyone once she is free. Arthur claims that she could have stopped Hitler, Neo, Pol Pot and other incredibly evil people if she had been free. If Arthur Harrow manages to unleash Ammit’s power, the Egyptian goddess will potentially have the ability to create a peaceful world by killing anyone who is or could become a bad person.
