Midnight Family Series: The New Mexican Drama Series From Apple TV+

The documentary Midnight Family series received a nomination at the Sundance Film Festival, another at the Ariel Awards, one more at the Guadalajara Film Festival, one at the Hong Kong Film Festival, and many other international festivals, becoming one of the most talked about Mexican documentaries of 2019. The documentary told the story of the Ochoa family, who drove a private ambulance and competed with other paramedics and medical services to be the first to reach patients and provide them with urgent service, in exchange for a fee that they needed to survive.

Now, that documentary has become a series, directed by Mexican Natalia Beristáin and produced for Apple Tv+, which this year also released the crime drama Las Azules, where Bárbara Mori and Ximena Sariñana help tell the story of the first female police officers in Mexico in the 1970s. Familia de Medianoche will arrive on the platform with 10 chapters, which we will be able to see this year. There are great Mexican series on streaming and this one will undoubtedly become another hit. Apple TV+ is known for its high-quality series (from Ted Lasso to The Morning Show and Presumed Innocent with Jake Gyllenhaal), so there are high expectations for Midnight Family.

What is Midnight Family About?

Like the documentary, the series will tell the story of a family that drives a private ambulance in Mexico City, where they must do everything possible to be the first to arrive at the scenes of accidents and medical crises. The Apple TV+ synopsis reads: Inspired by the award-winning documentary of the same name, “Midnight Family” follows Marigaby Tamayo (Vaca), an ambitious and talented medical student by day, who spends her nights saving lives in a sprawling, contrasting, and fascinating Mexico City aboard her family’s private ambulance. Together with her father Ramón (Cosío) and brothers Marcus (Calva) and Julito (Bautista), Marigaby serves a population of millions by facing extreme medical emergencies to earn a living.

The Cast of Midnight Family

The Apple Tv+ statement confirmed that “Midnight Family” has an entirely Hispanic cast and crew led by actors such as Joaquín Cosío, Renata Vaca, Diego Calva, and Sergio Bautista, with the special participation of Óscar Jaenada, and performances by José María de Tavira, Itzan Escamilla, Mariana Gómez, Dolores Heredia and Yalitza Aparicio, from Roma and The Great Seduction, who is a special guest in the series, so we assume that she will not have a regular character, but a cameo within this story. The series is directed by Natalia Beristáin, of Mexican films such as Ruido (which is inspired by the true story of thousands of Mexican mothers fighting for their missing children and justice) and Los Adioses, who previously worked with Apple Tv+ on the adaptation of The Mosquito Coast, the mystery and adventure series starring Justin Theroux.
