Locked In Ending Explained: Who Tried To Kill Katherine And Who Is The Real Victim? Netflix Film

The most striking thing about Netflix’s new psychological thriller Locked In appears to be the vast open landscapes of the English countryside and the dark atmosphere that surrounds the film. The plot revolves around a friendly nurse trying to unravel the details of a horrific accident of one of her patients, but for the most part, it’s an ordinary story with no notable qualities. The film’s tension and twists make for an interesting viewing experience, but there’s little to reflect on afterward. The film, which has been available on the popular streaming platform since November 1, 2023, begins with Katherine being run over and ending up in the hospital without being able to say a word. With the help of nurse Mackenzie (Anna Friel), the woman reveals that they tried to murder her. Who was responsible? Meanwhile, Lina tells the nurse that after her mother’s death, Katherine welcomed her into her home. Shortly after, Katherine’s husband died and left his son Jamie as his sole heir, who suffered from epilepsy and became the responsibility of little Lina.

Locked In Ending Explained: The Story Plot

The movie Locked In on Netflix begins with Katherine in the hospital, after being hit by a car. The only thing she can do is blink, and her nurse Nicky tries to make her express herself that way. Thus, the woman can tell her that someone tried to kill her. She goes back in time to find out why Katherine is in this condition. Thirteen years before she takes legal custody of Lina, when her best friend Danielle, the latter’s mother, dies. Meanwhile, her late husband leaves all his wealth to his son Jamie. When, 10 years later, Lina marries Jamie, Katherine begins to become suspicious. Furthermore, Lina is not happy, as she feels treated like Jamie’s servant.

At this point, she begins a secret relationship with Robert. Over time, Leilina decides to kill Jamie and pass it all off as an accident. In this way, she will be able to gain control of all the family’s assets. The plan works and Jamie drowns in the lake, with Robert purposely capsizing their boat and holding him underwater. Later, Lina threatens the doctor to leave him, but he can blackmail her because he wrote in her diary that she hated Jamie and that he wanted to kill her. After a fight, Lina runs away from home and is chased by Robert in a car and Katherine on horseback.

Locked In Ending Explained: Who is Lina? Why Did the Relationship with Katherine Change?

The fact that Lina is the only person who visits Katherine in the hospital raises questions about their relationship. Although their regular visits suggest they are close, Lina’s reluctance to directly care for Katherine suggests some distance. When Nickie finally talks to Lina, the complex relationship between the two women is discovered. Katherine, much older than Lina, had been best friends with Lina’s mother, Danielle, since childhood. Katherine was an orphan and grew up in foster homes, spending most of her time at Danielle’s house. The friendship continued into adulthood, but Katherine’s fortunes changed when she became a famous and wealthy actress.

She never wanted to stay away from Danielle, but her friend wanted to keep her distance, as she still lived in poverty. Katherine promised to buy Danielle a grand piano when she had money, and the piano that was at her friend’s house was bought by her. There is a difference of opinion about the breakup between the two friends. Lina argues that it was Katherine who decided to walk away, especially since she bought the piano with a large sum of money. However according to Katherine, it was Danielle who refused to be friends with her after she moved to the US for work, and during that time, Danielle was murdered. The exact reason behind Danielle’s death is not revealed in Locked In, but it is mentioned that Lina abandoned her mother at home and that she was murdered while alone. It can be assumed that Danielle was killed over money or drug issues while her daughter was away.

Who is the Real Victim?

Disappointingly, the protagonist of Locked In looks for Katherine but finds her kissing Lawrence. Realizing that everything is a trap, she decides to leave, but they try to stop her. After hiding, hurting the doctor, and struggling with Jamie’s mother, Lina manages to leave the house. While Katherine chases her on horseback and is about to shoot Lina, Lawrence appears in a car and runs her over to protect the young woman, or at least that is what the doctor claims, whom Lina helps and protects only because if he falls drags her, especially because she has the diary where she wrote her darkest desires. When the nurse manages to get Katherine to communicate and discovers that they tried to kill her, she contacts the police.

However, Lina and Lawrence go ahead and take the woman to the mansion to get rid of her. Before Lina continues with Lawrence’s plan, the nurse calls her to explain that Katherine did not try to kill her but rather tried to protect her from the doctor. Although she was in cahoots with him, she didn’t want to see her die, so she threatened the doctor with reporting him, which caused him to run over her. At the end of Locked In Lina kills Lawrence to prevent him from murdering Katherine, while Nurse Mackenzie calls the police. When the patrols arrive at Rowling Manor Lina asks the nurse: “What will you tell them?” Although she doesn’t respond, seeing the three women together suggests that they will blame everything on the doctor.

What Was Robert’s Real Plan?

Jamie and Lina’s marriage made her rich and part of the aristocratic upper class, but there was no romantic spark between them. It’s clear that Lina craves attention and intimacy, and when a third party enters their relationship, she can’t resist. Jamie was being treated by the family doctor, Robert Lawrence, a handsome man only a few years older than the patient and his wife. It was Robert who Lina found to be the lover she had been looking for, and they began an affair soon after. However, Locked In reveals that Robert Lawrence had a malevolent plan of his own and the case was just one part of that plan. Simply put, Robert wanted all the wealth and property that belonged to Jamie and had devised a plan to get it, whether in the form of ownership of Rowling Manor or in the form of money from the sale of it. He intentionally seduced Lina, knowing that she would be the heir to the entire estate if anything happened to her husband, Jamie. And indeed, something would soon happen to Jamie, as he was the rightful heir.

Eventually, both Katherine and Jamie discovered Lina’s infidelity, and the wife became frustrated with the criticism. Lina was experiencing true love and passion for the first time, and she longed to leave that life behind and start over with her new lover. Dr. Robert Lawrence had been waiting for this moment when Lina would agree to anything for his love. The doctor had previously kept Jamie socially limited and restricted in life, leaving him addicted to painkillers and other nerve-relaxing pills. Now, he needed Jamie to get out of the picture completely. If Jamie decided to divorce Lina, Robert’s plan would be ruined. Therefore, he took Jamie and Lina for a boat ride and intentionally capsized the boat, causing everyone to fall into the water. Both Robert and Lina were good swimmers, but Jamie couldn’t swim, and the doctor drowned him to death. Lina was now a widow with all the wealth in the world, and her lover wanted her to sell the property to get money, making them rich too.

But Lina realized Robert’s evil nature and decided not to follow the plan, also out of love and respect for Katherine, who would be left homeless if Rowling Manor was sold. However, Lina discovered that Robert was having a secret affair with his adoptive mother, Katherine. Robert’s true plan was to obtain property and wealth in any way possible while keeping both women under control. If Lina agreed to get rid of Katherine, he would inherit her wealth as a lover and then as a husband. But if Lina refused, which she did, Robert would convince Katherine to kill the young girl together, and with the death of Lina, the last legitimate heir to the estate, there would be no one left to claim the family fortune. In that case, Robert would live happily with Katherine, and even if he got rid of her later, no one would question his ownership of the property. That seemed to be Robert’s exact plan.

The Ending of Lina and Katherine?

Although Robert made a solid plan to inherit the estate, he did not consider the love, or simply the humanity, of the two women. While he planned to kill one of them, both Lina and Katherine refused to harm the other. At the end of the film, it is revealed that, when Robert was chasing Lina in his car, Katherine asked him to stop and let the young woman go. This enraged the man, and he ran over Katherine, seriously injuring her. There is even a suggestion that Katherine was having an affair just to get the vile man’s attention away from Lina because she knew he would try to kill Lina soon. At that moment, Robert knew that he could still influence Lina to follow her plan, which happened because Lina did not know that her mother-in-law had tried to protect her.

Therefore, Lina agrees to Robert’s plan to take the injured Katherine back to Rowling Manor and kill her with sedatives, making it look like a natural death. It was the nurse, Nickie, who smartly realizes what happened and sends a message to Lina. Jamie had been admitted to the same hospital before, and Nickie had been suspicious of Robert Lawrence ever since, as the medications he prescribed caused Jamie’s illness. She also witnessed the closeness between Jamie and Lina several times and understood more than she let on. Based on these messages, and perhaps out of love for Katherine, Lina accepts that Robert is the true source of the evil in their lives. At the end of Locked In, Lina finally manages to inject a syringe into Robert’s neck and, when this does not have the desired effect, she courageously stabs him with a knife, finally killing him. The film ends with the police and paramedics arriving at the property to take away the horrible man’s body, while Lina, Katherine, and Nickie, who have just protected themselves from harm, look on with relief on their faces.
