Apart from Akshay Kumar, Vaani Kapoor, Taapsee Pannu, Amy Virk, Aditya Seal, Pragya Jaiswal, and Fardeen Khan have important roles in this film. The length of this film is 2 hours 14 minutes and 7 seconds. Khel Khel Mein is a remake of the 2016 Italian film ‘Perfect Strangers’. But the concept of this film is so universal that it was easy to adapt it to the Indian format. Without tampering with the soul or essence of the film. Another positive aspect of the film is that this film marks Akshay’s return to comedy after a long time. This makes Khel Khel Mein a fun film despite all its flaws. The story of Khel Khel Mein is about seven friends. All of them have gone to Jaipur to attend a wedding. There, away from the crowd of the wedding, they sit in a room and chill. Then Vartika gets the idea of playing a game.
The rule of the game is that everyone will keep their mobile phones on the table in front of them. Whoever’s phone rings, he will tell everyone why his phone rang. Along with this, he will also answer calls, messages, and emails in front of everyone. As soon as the name of the phone comes, the male members of the group start hesitating. However, they are forced to become a part of this game. In this one night, everyone’s secrets start getting revealed one by one. And after this night, the lives of all of them change forever. Recently a Tamil film ‘Love Today’ was released. The concept of this film was also more or less the same. But that story was only about a couple who exchanged their phones. The film was well received. Soon its remake is going to be made in Hindi. But Akshay is not a part of it. Anyway, the subject of Khel Khel Mein may sound non-serious and fun. But believe me, when you have to hand over your phone along with the password to someone, things automatically start getting serious. Something similar happens with this film as well. The film starts with fun. The backstory of all the seven characters is told. Some stories are funny. Some are tedious. But when they come together, they become interesting.

The story begins with the setting of a big fat wedding of a rich family, where there are three couples and their bachelor friend. All have come to attend the wedding of Vartika’s (Vaani Kapoor) sister. Rishabh Malik (Akshay Kumar) is the father of a teenage daughter. Vartika, an aspiring writer, is the second wife of this well-known plastic surgeon. The second couple is of housewife Harpreet (Taapsee Pannu) and businessman Harpreet (Amy Virk). The third couple is of businessman Samar (Aditya Seal) and rich Naina (Pragya Jaiswal). Their friend Kabir Fardeen Khan, who is a sports coach, is meeting his friends after a long time. Rishabh and Vartika’s marriage is on the verge of breaking, while Harpreet and her husband have been trying for a child for 6 years, while Samar is busy day and night in his wife Naina’s father’s business. That night, Vartika gives everyone the idea of playing a game to pass the time. In this game, everyone has to unlock their phone and keep it on the table and is dared to read and listen to the incoming messages and calls in front of everyone.

This film talks about issues like broken marriages, betrayal, sexuality, and job-career problems. All these are very common issues, which are easy to relate to. The film does not have to work hard for that. However, this film does not deal with these topics in a genuine way that can be taken seriously. It does not give a real solution. It just leaves it in a mess. This leads to comedy and a light emotional angle. Which helps the film. The biggest highlight of Khel Khel Mein is Akshay Kumar himself. He is leading a large ensemble cast in this film. His career is in turmoil these days. But his comic timing is still intact. There are many scenes in the film that work only because Akshay Kumar is in it. In this film, he plays the role of a plastic surgeon named Rishabh Malik, who is an expert in lying. Vaani Kapoor has played the role of his wife Vartika. The idea of playing this mobile game is her brainchild.
Fardeen Khan is making a comeback with this film after 14 years. He has played a character in the film which is very relevant. He plays a cricket coach named Kabir who has been fired from his job. The choice of this character for his comeback shows that his second innings is going to be interesting. Amy Virk and Taapsee Pannu have played the role of a Punjabi couple who are trying to have a child. Due to this their marriage and mutual equation are affected. The conflict of this couple, we have already seen in Akshay’s ‘Good News’ and ‘Tanu Weds Manu Returns’. Amy Virk does not have much to do. But his character is not just as funny as Sardar. Taapsee Pannu‘s work is fun. She has played the role of a girl named Harpreet who makes reels. Seeing Taapsee in this film, it seems that she should do more comedy films. Because she is naturally funny.
Pragya Jaiswal and Aditya Seal have played the role of the third married couple. Till the time they had not come to Jaipur to attend the wedding, their own marriage was going smoothly. After coming here, they get the biggest shock. But their sub-plot is very typical. There is no novelty in it at all. Aditya looks stiff in his role. Khel Khel Mein is a clean comedy film. It has its own flaws. It leaves realism behind for entertainment. In many cases, it happens that neither Maya nor Ram is found. But this film manages to save its entertainment quotient. This is its victory. The hero of a Hindi film is never morally wrong. This mentality has ruined many films. Khel Khel Mein goes there. But comes back in the last scene. In some places, the film also tries to impart knowledge. But sexuality is a subject about which talking (under moral pressure) cannot be called preachy. This film committed an unpardonable crime. That is, a beautiful song like ‘Kuch Na Karin’ has been remixed in it. And I have no qualms in saying that that song has been ruined. I will personally never forgive the makers for this.
After a long time, Akshay Kumar is seen as very comfortable and in his prime form in a film. The magic of his comic timing, which seemed to be disappearing, is once again setting the screen on fire with Khel Khel Mein. But in this film, his co-actors have also shouldered the comedy burden equally. Although Akshay’s character is the lead in the film, all the characters have their share of time and moments to shine. Fardeen Khan and Taapsee Pannu left no stone unturned in capitalizing on this moment. Whatever they were given to do in the film, they did it with complete honesty and while enjoying it. Aditya Seal and Pragya Jaiswal have also played their part in comedy and serious moments well. Vaani Kapoor has captured the character of a slightly serious and intellectual writer well and among all things, Amy Virk has played the character of an awkward Sardar well. Chitrangada Singh has a funny cameo in the film.
After watching this film of Akshay, one understands how interesting its title is. The film Khel Khel Mein treats three serious issues with laughter and love. When Akshay’s character guides his daughter to spend ‘quality time’ with her boyfriend, it becomes a learning lesson for every adult child and his parents. In the story, the sexuality of a character also becomes a medium of message. The maturity with which the film treats it is less expected from mainstream Bollywood films. Due to a misunderstanding in the film, a straight character is initially considered gay. But when the truth is revealed, everyone is stunned and the same ‘friends could have told me’ refrain starts. The film questions the need to make this information public. There is a very important dialogue that ‘If you became gay for half an hour, your whole world turned upside down’. This scene has also been presented very well.
However, the film stereotypes some characters and their behavior, which becomes a bit over the top in some places. But this will not distract the audience in the theaters too much. The songs are good but even if they were not there, not much would have been lost. The songs slow down a film with crisp timing. The film also fails a bit at one place in dealing with mental health. But Mudassar Aziz has treated everything very seriously and has taken full care that in the entire film, there is not a single 10 minutes in which there is no punch or comedy on screen. If you have the skill to speak, then everything is heard. No matter how complex the matter is, the way of speaking makes it simple. Khel Khel Mein is a perfect example of this. Why are we saying this, we will explain with context. Keeping postponing everything cannot be an alternative to anything. Ignoring the problem only increases it. It should be discussed. By postponing it, the matter seems to be solved at that time, but it causes harm in the long term. It is not us; it is the picture that is losing to us, brother.
However, there is a thin line between solving things immediately and waiting, which this movie deals with. For example, in one place Fardeen Khan‘s character says that you want everything immediately. You also want forgiveness immediately. Apologize and wait. Give time to someone. What I mean to say is that space is needed in every relationship. It is a big crime to impose your things on anyone, because by doing this you will get what you want, but you will not get what the other person wants to give you. You will be happy at that time, but to be happy all the time, a little space, a little bond and a little understanding are needed. There is no technical aspect of this film that needs to be discussed. But its artistic side should be discussed, and so it is being discussed. The film also expresses its opinion on hidden homosexuals in a very polite manner. While talking about such issues, films become preachy. But this is not the case with this film. The film does not give any special treatment to this issue. It moves forward by keeping it as a small thing, which is the most important thing in this era.
Akshay Kumar is in his element after a long time. His comic timing is amazing. He reacts to many things in such a way that it makes you laugh. His punches land equally. He has to return to this genre, only then will it be fun. He is the king of this genre. This is his second consecutive good performance after ‘Sarfira’. He is returning to form. Hopefully, his films return to form at the box office too. Fardeen Khan has returned to the big screen after many years with this film. His return is also smooth. It is fun to watch him. At many places, one is reminded of ‘No Entry’ and ‘All is Well’. He has missed some places. He will have to improve his acting a bit more. He will have to polish himself again. Taapsee Pannu got a character of her range. She has also taken advantage of it. She has captured the Punjabi accent very well. She has done full Bhaukaal by playing it throughout the film. Amy Virk‘s comic timing is also good. He has done justice to his character. Vaani Kapoor has also tried to act well.
