Kaleidoscope Ending Explained: Who Gets the Money? What is Leo’s Fate?
Netflix has decided to start 2023 with a great premiere, Kaleidoscope, which arrived on the platform on January 1. One of the series’ strongest points is its non-linear structure, which allows each user to have a different experience when viewing it. The new approach adds a refreshing touch to this dramatic thriller about a heist perpetrated by a group of skilled thieves. As interesting as this decision is when it comes to structuring the plot, it is likely that there are some viewers who feel confused. First of all, it should be noted that it is very important that you see the white chapter as a conclusion, to have the necessary context to understand the ending. In addition, below, I explain the keys to the conclusion of Kaleidoscope on Netflix:
A series with an innovative and unexpected format has just been released by Netflix. Kaleidoscope caused great expectations before its release, given the promise of being a production with a serial format, but that can be watched in any way the viewer prefers. It is certainly a series that will go down in history since the season’s narrative connects, but it does not need to be followed linearly. With all episodes of the season released, some points of the episodes’ outcomes were left open. Next, we brought the full explanation of the season finale. Are you prepared to better understand every detail? Check below:
Kaleidoscope: The Story Plot
After all, the true story of bonds, of the vault, of hurricane Sandy is, in itself, pure cinema. Cinema that in Kaleidoscope approaches seriality (and vice versa) creating in the public a direct connection and binge-watching involvement that pushes us to consume in the shortest possible time the eight episodes which in the title refer to eight colors, quoting Tarantino’s hyenas and the endless NYC subway lines: Yellow, Green, Blue, Purple, Orange, Red, Pink and White.
A story that branches out and extends over a period of twenty-five years and features a band of expert thieves who try to break into the most fortified vault in New York City, protected by an infallible and ruthless security team. Making up the cast, in an array that will soon lose any point of reference, are Paz Vega, Rosaline Elaby, Jai Courtney, Peter Mark Kendall, Tati Gabrielle and the two protagonists of the chessboard: Giancarlo Esposito, who plays Leo Pep, the leader of the outlaws, and Rufus Sewell, who plays Roger Sales, a former criminal who now manages the firewall around the blockhouse hidden under the Manhattan soil.
Kaleidoscope is an ingeniously structured heist thriller that spans 25 years, broken into blocks separated in time. To that, the creator Eric Garcia (REPO MAN) adds an extra element: except the one that takes place during the robbery itself (which, chronologically, is not the last, but you must see it last), the series can be seen in any order. How is this? Each episode does not have a number but a color and a place within the chronology: the “yellow” takes place six weeks before the robbery, the “green” seven years before the robbery, the “blue” five days before the robbery, the ” red” the morning after the robbery and so on, spanning a quarter of a century accessed randomly. To me, for example, Netflix presented the episodes in a certain way, but I calculate that others will be put together differently, and I imagine that, if you want, you can also put them together chronologically. What they recommend – and the reason is understandable – is that the robbery itevent be left for last.
Loosely inspired by a true even the disappearance of $70 billion worth of bonds from a high-security vault in Manhattan during a hurricane — the series is arranged in the classic pattern of these tales involving precise and intricate thefts of a lot of planning. It depends on how you enter the story; you will see it from different circumstances and organize it based on that. Making the chronology more or less readable, it can be said that it is the story of a certain Leo Pap (Giancarlo Esposito), a white-collar thief who goes to jail for many years after being caught after a complicated robbery. Being there – but especially later, when leaving – he begins to organize a group with which he will put together the complicated robbery of the bonds.
That group is made up of the Spanish Paz Vega, who plays Ava Mercer, an Argentine lawyer (in addition to the accent that the actress doesn’t do very well, there are many quotes and references to the country in the series, including a character named… Javier Zanetti) who is the one who handles the issue of weapons and has good contacts; Peter Mark Kendall as Stan Loomis, one of Leo’s prison friends and a clever if somewhat innocent thief; Rosaline Elbay stars as Judy Goodwin, a smuggler who starts as Stan’s girlfriend but later leaves him for Bob Goodwin (Jay Courtney), an intense and somewhat unmanageable safecracker. The group is completed by Jordan Mendoza, the classic driver of the plan.
Kaleidoscope Ending Explained: Who Gets the Money?
The daughter of the gang leader, Hannah Kim, decides to ruin the plans, intercepting the money before RJ’s truck takes it out of the building. His plan is to distribute it among the income of the rich, making everything return to normal. Thus, none of the group members gets the expected reward. Instead, all they get is a couple of thousand dollars that Hannah had left behind so they wouldn’t suspect her.
What is Leo’s Fate?
Leo Pap is the leader of the titular Kaleidoscope gang, a complex character who closely resembles other anti-heroes in fiction. Similar to Walter White or Tony Soprano, the protagonist of this series is a family man willing to commit the worst crimes for his own. The ending of him is quite melancholic and takes place in the pink episode.
A couple of months after the robbery, Leo is living with health problems similar to those of Parkinson’s. Before her finale, she speaks one last time with her daughter and manages to have the personal closure she so badly needed. Finally, and in typical anti-hero fashion, he gets “what he deserves” when he is gunned down by a man in a kaleidoscopic T-shirt. If we look closely, we can see that he is wearing the same clothes as the son of Roger Salas
Ray Wants Revenge
We start Kaleidoscope by better understanding who Ray Vernon is. The protagonist of the story was considered the right-hand man of someone who today calls himself Roger Salas. One day, the ex-partner simply decided to leave behind everything they lived together and assumed a new identity. Ray was mostly shaken by how the man, who is now called Roger, made this life change. Ray wanted a life exactly like the one Roger started to have and, for this, he decided to plan revenge. Upon discovering Roger’s current reality, Ray discovers that he is with a billionaire company.
The Robbery Team
Ray begins to think of a way to steal the traitor’s empire and, for this, he understands that it is necessary to be on the side of skilled and reliable people. The first chosen is Stan, a perceptive figure that Ray met in jail. Stan, in turn, chooses Judy to support him. With Judy choice, she decides to work alongside her husband, Bob. Ray’s lawyer, Ava, is also called to join this team and becomes a kind of manager. Each must think of a way to steal the securities from Roger’s stock company. With an eye on the profits, they will make from the robbery, they take a risk and end up executing the plan. However, when they open the boxes of the truck in which they were carrying these values, they come across sheets of paper. This suggests that someone discovered them in time for the theft.
Hannah’s Skilled Mind
In the final episode, we discover that Hannah, Ray’s daughter, played a key role in the scam. She served as an informant and was the only one not scheduled for the day of the robbery, as Ray feared that Hannah would have her reputation tarnished forever. Hannah resisted and always told her father that she was willing to participate in the theft. Ray’s attitude in trying to protect her caused her to want to show everyone that she was capable of being part of a grand plan like this one. Therefore, Hannah began to dedicate herself to finding a way to take all the titles for herself, including those that would go to her father.
Hannah discovers that FedEx has facilities in the same building as Roger’s company offices where the theft was to take place. In the plan, Judy would send the bonds through the elevator in boxes, unattended. The point is that, exactly at this moment, Hannah is taking advantage of a completely logistical and favorable coincidence. On the way to the final destination, the elevator needs to pass through the FedEx floor. Exactly at this moment, Hannah exchanges the real boxes for the fake ones. The reason is just one: to take a bigger share of titles and protect the father from a rematch by Roger, who will surely return to settle the score.
If Ray exposed himself in this way, he would be directly incriminated and could pay with his life. In this way, Hannah saves her father and still ensures that justice is done. In her plan, she decides to return the titles to their owners, greatly weakening Roger and making Ray avenge him in the same way. The bonds were with Roger because they were illegal money. In the operation orchestrated by Hannah, in addition to saving Ray from a historic rematch, Hannah gets protection and employment for herself, her father and her adoptive sister Liz by returning the titles to the owners. If Ray’s plan were carried out, it wouldn’t just be Roger who would be looking for him to death: the bondholders would also be looking for him. Also, Hannah manages to make her father never doubt her ability and insight.
Roger Comes Across the Personal Safe
In the final scenes, you can see the moment when Roger finds out what happened. Ray leaves something in Roger’s safe, which completely harks back to the beginning of their partnership. Ray wanted to start a new life, but he was always tempted to return to the criminal world. During the execution of one of the plans, Ray and Roger steal valuable jewelry from a place where Lily, Ray’s wife, previously worked. The point is that, on the day of the theft, Lily decides to return to the place without the two of them knowing. Roger, to buy time, decides to start a fire without telling Ray.
The thing is, the fire completely loses control, and Lily is trapped in place and dies. Roger’s attitude should have been to go back to help her, once he discovered that she was there. But being selfish and traitorous, he thought it best to escape before being caught and ignored that his partner’s wife’s life was at risk. Also because of this robbery, Ray was caught in the act and was arrested, having to stay away from his daughter for years. Roger got away with leaving everything behind and rendering no assistance to Ray. For this, Ray not only wanted to execute revenge but also to make it clear to Roger who had done all this. Therefore, Roger’s personal safety is precisely the jewel of the robbery that changed Ray’s life.
Can The Protagonists Complete The Robbery?
- The answer to this question may vary depending on what we consider to be a success.
- If we take into account the main objective of the mission of the protagonists, that is, to get the money, then they did manage to carry out the plan.
- Leo and company manage to overcome the obstacles and, initially, they get hold of the 7 billion
- Even so, there are a couple of moments when everything turns upside down, so you could say that the plan wentawry
Either way, it’s great to see Leo and his teammates in action, as their solutions to counter high-tech security are some of the most creative, I’ve ever seen. The use of bees to block sensors or submerge the subsoil to normalize temperatures are great examples of this ingenuity. On the other hand, I have to say that the use of the mask that imitates the face of Roger Salas seemed somewhat crazy to me. With that being said, the next challenge facing the team is dividing up that huge mountain of money.
What Happens to the Rest of the Team?
Bob Goodwin
One of the most hated characters in the series, whose main purpose was to lock his wife back into an abusive relationship. Bob finds the end of him when he is lured to a South Carolina beach with the intent to kill Stan. Instead of achieving his mission, it is he ends up bleeding to death on the sand.
Stan Loomis and Judy Goodwin
Despite the fact that these two are among the members of the group who seem to have more complicity, their paths separate after Bob’s death. Free of threats from the gang members, they can start a new life. This is exactly what Judy decides to do when she finds the money Roger gave Bob.
Ava Mercer
This character is one of the ones that meant the most to Leo since he became his love interest after the death of his wife, 24 years before the robbery. During the pink episode, we see how he loses his life at the hands of one of Bob’s men. This is another way that the series shows the viewer how harmful the leader of the gang is to his environment.
RJ Acosta
This is one of the more innocent characters in the group, as well as one of Judy’s best friends as they plan the hit. Despite everything they’ve shared, he ends up dying at the hands of her partner when she discovers Bob’s plan to get the money and leave them behind. By far this is the saddest ending of any character in the series.
