Joker: Folie à Deux: The First Poster and Trailer Release Date Out Now
Warner Bros. has officially started the marketing campaign for Joker: Folie à Deux (Joker 2), the official title of the sequel to Todd Phillips’ “Joker”. Joaquin Phoenix and Lady Gaga make a perfect couple in the first poster of Joker: Folie á Deux. The musical sequel to Todd Phillips’ Joker is gearing up for its marketing campaign, with an October release date on the horizon. If watching the long-awaited sequel to Joker wasn’t enough, Joker: Folie á Deux also stars singer, songwriter, and actress Lady Gaga in the role of DC icon Harley Quinn. Phillips has released the first poster for Joker: Folie á Deux, as well as announcing when the film’s first trailer will arrive.
The first poster for this long-awaited film has been released, and in the revealing image, you can see the main characters, Arthur Fleck (played by Joaquin Phoenix) and Harleen Quinzel (played by Lady Gaga), sharing an intimate dance. After Arthur Fleck, now known as Joker, established himself as a symbol of inspiration for the criminals of Gotham City in the original film, the addition of psychotherapist Harleen Quinzel, who will end up becoming his lover and sidekick Harley Quinn, promises to add a new dimension to the plot. Along with this first image, it has been announced that the first trailer for the film will premiere on Tuesday, April 9, increasing anticipation for what promises to be a complex love story between the Joker and Harley Quinn. Based on other versions of these characters, it is likely that their relationship does not bode well for the citizens of Gotham.
“First trailer coming April 9th. #jokermovie,” director Todd Phillips wrote in an Instagram post. The poster for Joker: Folie á Deux shows Joaquin Phoenix’s Joker and Lady Gaga’s Harley Quinn dancing together, with Joker holding Harley Quinn as light streams through a window. “The world is a stage”, we still read in the poster, while the release date of the film is October 4th.
Joker: Folie à Deux’s Place in James Gunn’s DC Universe!
With James Gunn and Peter Safran at the helm of DC Studios, the future of projects outside of the DC Universe has been up for debate. Thankfully, films like The Batman: Part II and Joker: Folie á Deux can exist alongside Superman: Legacy. The creation of the “Elseworlds” banner will help alleviate any confusion, with the Elseworlds films existing outside of the main continuity of the DC Universe.
Gunn revealed in December that Elseworlds won’t debut until at least 2025, when the films overseen by Gunn and Safran begin releasing after Superman: Legacy. This means that at least Joker 2 (and probably Matt Reeves’ Batman films) will not be “Elseworlds”, but just stand-alone films without any special branding. Fans figured it out the way most DC Universe news breaks these days: They asked James Gunn directly. After a fan asked if there would be a special branding for Joker 2, Gunn shot down the idea entirely.
“No,” Gunn said on Threads. “It won’t debut until the films we’ve been working on”.
The first “Joker” film explored Arthur Fleck’s struggle with mental health issues and his inability to live the life he wanted, triggering his transformation into the iconic villain. The film concluded with the Joker’s imprisonment after murdering Murray Franklin (Robert De Niro) on national television, an event that could be the bridge to “Joker: Folie à Deux.” Historically, most versions of the relationship between the Joker and Harley Quinn begin during the Clown Prince of Crime’s internment in the mythical Arkham Asylum, where a young Harleen Quinzel ends up falling in love with her patient.
Joker: Folie à Deux not only marks the return of Joaquin Phoenix in the role that earned him an Academy Award but also the introduction of pop star Lady Gaga as the Joker’s inseparable partner. Furthermore, the film generated enormous expectations (and controversy) when it was revealed that it would be a musical, moving away from the dark and depressive setting that the first film provided. However, the director of photography, Lawrence Sher, ruled out these theories, ensuring that, although music will be a fundamental part of the film, it is far from being a musical film like Grease, Les Misérables, etc.
“It just has music, that’s all. The music is part of the movie and the characters, but I don’t know if it is a musical. Yes, there is music, but there is also a lot of music in the first one. There are things we did in the first Joker that are part of the DNA of the second one. In the first one you’re watching Charlie Chaplin…and he has some music inherent to him, the way he dances and walks and all that. There are some things that we shot and were cut, but there was a little bit of Charlie Chaplin in his kind of clown way. Some of that same idea of ’music’ is in Joker,” Sher stated in an interview.
What is Joker 2 About?
Joker: Folie à Deux will be a musical that follows the twisted love story between Joaquin Phoenix’s Arthur Fleck/Joker and Gaga’s Harley Quinn, with much of the film taking place inside Arkham Asylum. The film will also star Zazie Beetz, Brendon Gleeson, Catherine Keener, and Jacob Lofland.
It makes me very happy because I’ve said from the beginning that all I want is for Harley Quinn to be one of those characters, like Macbeth or Batman, who always goes from one great actor to another,” Margot Robbie said about it of Lady Gaga taking on the role. “It’s a bit like someone doing their Batman, or someone doing their Macbeth. It seems to me that in a few cases, they are female characters – Queen Elizabeth I, but also others, who I had the opportunity to play, and I was honored to do so. I said to myself: ‘Wow! Cate Blanchett did Queen Elizabeth I, now it’s my turn.” It’s an honor to have built a foundation solid enough for Harley to be one of those characters that other actors can try to play. And I believe she will do something incredible.”
The Soundtrack and Songs of Joker 2
Hildur Guðnadóttir also repeats in the music section for the film, although the strong point this time will be, as befits a musical, the songs. For more details, it will be what is called a “jukebox musical” (in the style of, for example, Baz Luhrmann’s Moulin Rouge) because there will be at least up to 15 reinterpretations of very well-known songs. Now, only one of them has been revealed, and it is very emblematic, of That’s Entertainment from the film Broadway Melodies 1955. In addition, it seems that two classic musical masterpieces such as Singing in the Rain and The Umbrellas of Cherbourg will also be great references.
Cast of ‘Joker 2’
Joaquin Phoenix once again playing Arthur Fleck alongside Lady Gaga is a promising union and they will, naturally, be the absolute stars of the show. But there will be more characters, of course, and they must be up to the task of the psychotic sequel that will reach us. Accompanying the madness of the protagonist couple will be Zazie Beetz in the character of Sophie Dumond (the neighbor and single mother to whom Arthur was attracted in the first installment), and prestigious veterans such as Catherine Keener (The Adam Project), Brendan Gleeson (The Banshees of Inisherin), Ken Leung (from the Lost series), Steve Coogan (24 Hour Party People) along with younger performers, in the case of Jacob Lofland (from the Maze Runner saga).
