On Kareena Kapoor’s birthday, her film Jaane Jaan hit the OTT platform. Apart from Kareena Kapoor, this murder mystery on Netflix features seasoned actors like Jaideep Ahlawat and Vijay Verma. It was directed by Sujoy Ghosh, the director who made Vidya Balan’s murder mystery film Kahaani. But, the question arises whether this film is worth watching. Is the chemistry of Kareena Kapoor Khan and Vijay Verma attractive? Can this prove to be a new murder mystery in the market like Kahaani?
Kareena Kapoor Khan has made her OTT debut with Jaane Jaan film. Her character in this film is that of a single mother who lives in a hilly area with her daughter. After a murder takes place, she comes under police investigation. This murder mystery has been directed by Sujoy Ghosh. The film also stars Jaideep Ahlawat and Vijay Verma. Whether it is a retaliatory action, a sudden action, or a premeditated attack aimed at eliminating a threat, murder is murder. But when the principles of mathematics are used to reveal or obscure the truth, can a murderer escape the noose? This is the question that writer-director Sujoy Ghosh’s cleverly crafted, superbly acted mystery thriller Jaane Jaan answers.
Jaane Jaan Movie Review (2023): The Story Plot
Mrs. Maya D’Souza (Kareena Kapoor) lives in Kalimpong with her teenage daughter Tara (Naisha Khanna). Maya runs a restaurant named Tiffin. Mother and daughter are happy in their life. Maya’s neighbor Naren (Jaideep Ahlawat) is a mathematics teacher. He likes Maya but doesn’t dare to say it. One day suddenly Maya’s husband and Mumbai Police sub-inspector Ajit Mhatre (Saurabh Sachdeva) arrives there searching for her. From there the layers of Maya’s past are revealed. She used to be a pole dancer. Ajit goes to Maya’s house to meet her. There, Ajit is murdered due to a mutual dispute. Meanwhile, Mumbai Police Officer Karan (Vijay Verma) comes to Kalimpong in search of missing Ajit. He starts investigating the case. Ajit’s burnt body is found by the police. The needle of doubt revolves only towards illusion. From there the process of searching for the police and the murderer begins.
The Netflix film follows a single mother and her 13-year-old school-going daughter who get caught up in a well-intentioned but risky cover-up attempt and a police investigation that almost goes cold. The mystery arises from a series of events that begin with an unfortunate incident that tests the math teacher’s talents and jeopardizes his neighbor’s future. Jaane Jaan is a genre-bending police procedural that dissects the minds of three characters rather than playing like a standard whodunit (in any case, we know who’s who from the start). Maya D’Souza (Kareena Kapoor in her OTT debut) has escaped an unhappy past and has settled into a stable life that revolves around her daughter and a thriving café in Kalimpong. Naren Vyas (Jaideep Ahlawat) loves mathematics more than anything in the world. Mumbai Police Detective Karan Anand (Vijay Verma), sent on a mission to Kalimpong, is the only one who puts all his cards on the table. He is looking for a wanted person.
Without any emotional or psychological baggage, he gets down to work with a local policeman, Sub-Inspector Sundar Singh (Karma Takapa, who loses no opportunity to make his presence felt). When Maya’s past comes back to haunt her, the well-being of her daughter Tara (Naisha Khanna) becomes her priority. She finds an unexpected ally in Naren, who is strangely trying to find a life beyond mathematics and her evening jujitsu sessions. This shows that Karan and Naren were classmates. As the two men probe each other’s sensitivities, the policeman is under increasing pressure from his boss to track down Ajit Mhatre (Saurabh Sachdeva in a brilliant cameo), a corrupt policeman and leader of the hawala racket who has been killed in the last the bar was seen in Kalimpong.
Precise world-building and measured dialogues – a Hindi crime drama that stays away from profanity for once – keep the battle of wits between the two individuals consistently entertaining, even though the audience knows what is being expected. Love or, to be precise, an infatuation that comes dangerously close to stalking finds an extremely strange way of expressing itself in Naren’s case, while a hint of lust is exchanged with Karan’s prime suspect Maya. Maya will have to maintain her composure amidst all this while facing the conflicts that come her way. His assistant Prema (Lynn Laishram) claims that their café makes the best momos in the city. But it is not for the dumplings that Naren goes to the eatery every day.
Quiet, and painfully shy, Narine’s hairlines are receding, he looks older than his years and walks like a man who likes to let time pass him by. He plays chess with himself and sets the question paper so difficult that the school authorities request him to take it easy. But he has his reasons. Naren tells a student, pull yourself up, the world will not come down to your level. Jaane Jaan traces the debilitating isolation of a man lost in his world as well as the difficulties that come the way of a woman who is determined to leave her troubled past behind. Multiple conflicts – protector-predator, victim-criminal, friend-enemy and genius-odd – lie at the heart of this twisted plot. The title, which might suggest that this is a story with an undercurrent of romance, comes from one of the rare cabaret numbers sung by Lata Mangeshkar (Intekaam, 1969, filmed on Helen). The song plays in a karaoke bar and provides a momentary glimpse of Maya’s backstory.

The most interesting aspect of the film is the character of Jaideep Ahlawat. From the mood of the character to his appearance, he has expressed his inferiority complex very seriously. He impresses with every scene of his. Jaane Jaan seems exciting at times, but when you expect a particular twist, it ends up being a disappointment. There are many shades to the main characters and their stories, but all remain half-baked. The environment of Kalimpong suits the story. From crime, victim, suspect, clues, and investigation, it has all the elements required for a mystery thriller, but due to the weak writing level, there is no attachment or hatred towards the characters. For example, Karan and Naren are described as being the same age and classmates, but very superficial information about their past is given. In their mutual meeting, Naren does not even once ask Karan about his life, even though both of them are meeting after a long time.
Why did Naren settle in Kalimpong? Why is there loneliness in his life? The lack of this information is disturbing. Ajit Mhatre ‘s character is also half-baked. Why did he make his wife a pole dancer despite being in the police? This is beyond comprehension. After the murder, the police match the DNA with the hair from the comb present in the hotel. Why not with his daughter? Where did Ajit’s body go? There is also incomplete information about the past of Ajit and Maya. There is a dialogue in the film that mathematics is also logic, but that logic has not been able to make the story interesting. Sujoy Ghosh, who gave memorable thriller films like Kahaani, and Badla, has missed the mark here. He has roped in Kareena Kapoor, Jaideep Ahlawat, and Vijay Verma for the film, but due to the weak story, their performances have also not been able to support the film.
The story is based around the character of Kareena Kapoor. Her character lives under the shadow of fear, in that role, she is seen slipping at times. Vijay Verma’s character in the film is more romantic. He is said to be intelligent, but while investigating, he appears to be an ordinary officer. Jaideep proves with his half-baked and ugly character why he is called a mediocre artiste. Sujoy could not properly utilize the talent of Saurabh Sachdeva. An attempt has been made through cinematography to give a small glimpse of the lifestyle of Kalimpong along with some beautiful scenes. There are many old songs in the film, which help in tying the knot. However, this film does not give any glimpse of the difficulties of the people living in the hilly areas.
This film by Sujoy Ghosh is an adaptation of the Japanese novel ‘The Devotion of Suspect X’. The novel is written by Keigo Higashino. Sujoy Ghosh spends his crime-thriller not in identifying the killer, but in finding out how the criminal dodged the police. When Ajit is murdered and Maya becomes a suspect in his past, Sujoy and Raj Vasanth (co-writers) try to create immediate tension in the story and succeed. As the story progresses, it becomes clear that there is more to this murder case than meets the eye. The cat-and-mouse game between the characters is interesting. However, the twists inserted in the plot increase the excitement. Still, the film has some flaws, for example, Karan becomes suspicious of Maya too early in the action. He finds many clues easily. There are many questions which cannot be answered. Apart from being a crime thriller, Jaane Jaan also explores the fine line between love, sacrifice, and passion. Cinematographer Avik Mukhopadhyay has captured the atmosphere of Kalimpong very well on camera.
Jaideep Ahlawat has done a wonderful job as a strange genius and a man madly in love. Be it despair, helplessness, or determination, Jaideep has shown his best in every scene. His character is especially praised. Jaideep handles the character with complete confidence. He looks amazing, especially in the climax. Kareena Kapoor has looked excellent in whatever scene she has appeared in. From emotional scenes to fear, irritation, and anger, she plays every emotion very well. Especially when she dances to ‘Aa Jaane Jaan‘ in the karaoke club scene with Vijay Verma, she looks amazing. Vijay Verma has also demonstrated his abilities well in the role of a stubborn policeman. His chemistry with both his co-stars looks natural.
The movie Jaane Jaan is not very amazing. Its base is good. The story is also like a good mystery thriller. But director Sujoy Ghosh’s overconfidence is not allowing him to progress as a director after the film ‘Kahaani’. They need to forget what they have learned so far. Control over speech can become their first step in this. from around you They need to go out and discover India afresh. Perhaps by getting out of their comfort zone and exploring new challenges, they will also be able to discover real and original stories. Jaane Jaan Movie Review (2023): The Last Words
If crime and thriller films are your things, want to watch something that is mysterious and makes you think as you watch, then you will be in sync with Jaane Jaan. However, the grip and pace of the story in the book are much faster than in the film. Surprisingly, Sujoy Ghosh failed in this task. Jaane Jaan remains true to the text on which it is based (but for minor changes here and there and one major deviation from how the novel ends) – and to its genre – but it deliberately and intelligently undermines traditional crime dramas. Does. With stellar performances from the writer-director, technicians, music team, and actors, Jaane Jaan is an all-round triumph.
