Infiesto: The Story Plot

A small village in Spain that we know little about. A girl moves towards the camera, visibly shocked. Everything starting from the atmosphere, the colors and the soundtrack suggests nothing else: we are facing a full-blown Netflix thriller. The only exception: the film is set in March 2020 at the dawn of the Covid-19 pandemic. However, the narration of Covid has nothing to do with the plot, the film focuses on another topic. The story of Infesto is told through the investigations of two detectives who go against a ruthless subject who kidnaps young women and young men. The latter become the victims of a sacrifice in the name of a “higher power”. Soon, the film focuses precisely on the manhunt and within an hour and a half completes the investigation – with some questionable twists.

Some secondary aspects of the plot are thrown into the wasteland of investigative information and are subsequently abandoned. Although at times, it lacks a linear thread, Infiesto presents itself to the viewer as a cold-colored thriller that wants to convey to the viewer the feeling of immersion in a surreal world. The plot that is written and directed by Patxi Amezcua walks a long thin thread of challenging events. Isak Férriz and Iria del Río give the faces to the protagonists of this film as two agents we know little about. Except for some information left to understand, a characterization of the characters would have been useful.

Infiesto Ending Explained: Who Kidnapped Saioa and Why?

Before we get to the end let’s go to the beginning. The film begins with the young Saioa Blanco reappearing after being missing for three months. She is found by two police officers who admit her to a hospital during the COVID-19 pandemic, which is still plaguing the entire world at the time the feature is set. Meanwhile, other dilemmas are presented, such as that of inspector Samuel García, who deals with the absence of his family and his mother who are separated from him because of the pandemic. It’s a situation similar to that of Inspector Castro, who is far from her partner Carlos, quarantined in a closed room at her house.

Both will need to deal with this personal issue while at the same time investigating Saoia’s kidnapping and reappearance. Samuel reviews the criminal records on the intersection where Saoia was last seen before she disappeared and goes with Castro to Manuel Gómez‘s stable, but they find nothing. After a bit of suspense, the forensic reports about Saoia arrive, which makes Samuel finally discover that the chemicals present in wine were in the young woman’s body – which makes him remember that there were barrels of wine in Manuel’s stable. He will team up with Castro to arrest him, but before the two can capture him, the man kills himself. Both begin to suspect the involvement of Manuel’s cousin in the kidnapping, but they end up reaching out to the deceased’s real accomplice, Santiago Marquina, known as The Demon.

The two head to the Demon’s house and try to open the trailer where he is supposed to be, but the car explodes and starts to catch fire, revealing itself to be a trap. Afterward, Castro discovers photos of several children inside the vehicle and, together with his colleague, discovers clues from one of the criminal’s closest acquaintances and manages to capture him. During his interrogation, Demon mentions a higher power called “Prophet”, which, according to him, is much more powerful. This leads us to the understanding that, despite appearing to be something greater, he is just a kind of disciple of the Prophet – just as the late Manuel was.

Samuel and Castro also discover that the children in the photos were kidnapped every three months in different parts of the country. On a date with Saioa, Samuel discovers that the girl was kidnapped by three people, which — in a way confirms the existence of the Prophet. The detectives have barely started looking for the Prophet when news comes out that, yet another young woman has been kidnapped which alarms the authorities and opens up the possibility that a murder has taken place. All of this is later revealed to be part of something bigger, a cult of sorts.

Who is the Prophet? The Origin of Everything

This group is led by the Prophet, who reveals himself to be none other than Agent Ramos, one of the police officers who found Saioa and admitted her to the hospital. Before joining the police, he was the great leader of the renowned cult and hid in the abandoned mines in the city of Infiesto. Before becoming the leader of that cult, Ramos was a teacher at a local school where he ended up getting close to Manuel and the Devil. He was loved by the children and townspeople alike and enjoyed a hedonistic lifestyle, encouraging others to do the same, which made the two acquaintances his disciples.

However, everything changed when he began to dive deep into Celtic mythology, which made him come across the Druids a group of priests who had prophetic powers in Ancient Europe, believed in reincarnation and made human sacrifices to appease the gods. Probably imagining being part of this group, a kind of heir to their powers, Ramos was captivated by the possibility of becoming a supreme authority and with the ability to interact with and satisfy the gods – which led him to walk a path of death and destruction.

What Are the Prophet’s Intentions?

From there, it was a jump for him to start with human sacrifices. He began to perform rituals and use symbols that referred to the Druid world – which can even be found in the round mark on Saioa’s back and the straw dolls found in various places. Ramos’ main objective was to satisfy Taranis, the god of storms in Celtic mythology. According to legend, he was supposed to be appeased on the occasions of the summer and winter solstices and on the spring and autumn equinoxes – which explains Ramos’ need to kill someone every three months.

It is clear from the story that the serial killer moved to the mining town only after the start of the pandemic since most of his victims are from other parts of Spain. This explains the long time that passed before he kidnapped someone from his hometown Saioa. The townspeople did not recognize him as the Prophet because he wore a mask in public and years had passed since his disappearance. Manuel and the Devil even felt attracted to his ideals, to the point of defending them even if it means sacrificing their lives. With the pandemic, Ramos came to believe that the end of the world was near, probably the result of Taranis’ anger or dissatisfaction with the actions of humans. Therefore, he returned to “work” in the sect. As Saioa managed to escape, he kidnapped a young woman outside the hospital where the young woman was admitted so that she could replace her.

Samuel comes very close to finding the real culprit, and that’s why Ramos needs to act. Claiming to know one of the suspects shown in a photo by the detective, he departs with the professional theoretically in search of clues, but in fact, everything is just a trap to get him out of his way. When Castro is told that the prophet’s last name is Ramos, she quickly concludes that he is the agent. She tries to immediately warn Samuel that he is in danger, but it is too late, as she arrives at the criminal’s house and finds only her colleague’s body.

But the Prophet still has to complete the mission to end the life of the young woman he kidnapped in the hospital, which leads Castro to the mine where he will perform the sacrifice. Going underground, she comes across the bound young woman and tries to free her but is attacked from behind. The Prophet shoots the detective, but the bullet ends up hitting only the woman’s hand, who manages to take advantage of the noise of an alarm to distract him and kill him. Before dying, Ramos states that this is “just the beginning”, as a good druid imagines that he will be reincarnated — which made him accept his death better. Castro, in turn, by ending the criminal’s life, manages both to save the kidnapped girl and to put far away a terror that would haunt the city in full and also avenge the death of his colleague.
