Immaculate: The Brutal Horror and Miracle Film with Sydney Sweeney
Sydney Sweeney has several films coming out in 2024, including Madame Web (with Dakota Johnson) and Immaculate, a horror story of nuns, a spooky convent, an unexplained pregnancy, and a series of dark, supernatural events. The film comes from the Neon studio, which has given us films like Parasite and Possessor (and many films that compete with A24’s horror stories), and is a religious horror story about fanaticism, miracles, dark secrets, and violence.
Sweeney is the protagonist of this story which takes place in a remote convent in Italy, where she quickly realizes that life is not so quiet and that this place is not as safe as it seems. She becomes the center of a story that plays between fantasy and reality, and that can have very bloody consequences. It is not the first movie about evil nuns or horror in which religious beliefs are added, but everything indicates that it could become one of this year’s horror favorites. At least in terms of photography, the film looks extraordinary.

The trailer for Immaculate shows Cecilia, a woman who travels to Italy to be a nun in a convent, where she quickly begins to have visions and experience strange things, and everything goes out of control when it is revealed that, despite not having contact with men and with the outside world, Cecilia is pregnant. And how do they react in the convent? Everyone is convinced that it is a miraculous act and a sign that she was chosen by God.

“I know that God saved me for a purpose, but I still don’t know what purpose,” says the protagonist in the clip. Before long, a strange event comes to light. She has become pregnant and apparently “it is a miracle.” However, deaths, nightmares, and horrifying visions surround Cecilia. “To suffer is to love,” another woman in the convent constantly repeats; while the distorted voice of another character predicts that she will never be able to escape from there. The talent in front of the cameras is complemented by the presence of actors of international caliber such as the Italian Simona Tabasco (The White Lotus), the Spanish Álvaro Morte (Money Heist), Benedetta Porcaroli (Baby), and Dora Romano. The artistic ensemble weaves an atmosphere conducive to this story of suspense and mystery.

The script comes from the hand of Andrew Lobel and the production team includes, in addition to Sweeney and Jonathan Davino, Teddy Schwarzman and Michael Heimler of Black Bear, who shape the film along with executive producers John Friedberg and Christopher Casanova, as well as Will Greenfield.
A Promising Year for Sydney Sweeney
Sweeney will not only present Immaculate this year but is also betting on the superhero genre with Marvel’s long-awaited Madame Web. The film, which premieres in February 2024, takes the actress to an action universe with the role of Julia Carpenter. Her previous statements highlight her chemistry and shared experience with her co-stars Dakota Johnson, Isabela Merced, and Celeste O’Connor; a female team that aspires to transmit energy and empowerment in the field.
The Cast of Immaculate
Sydney Sweeney, who is about to release the Marvel movie about Madame Web, leads the cast as Cecilia, but Immaculate has other familiar faces, starting with one of the protagonists of the second season of The White Lotus, Simona Tabasco, who played a prostitute in the HBO series. Immaculate also features Álvaro Morte, whom we remember for his role as The Professor in La Casa de Papel, Benedetta Porcaroli, from the Netflix series Baby, Dora Romano and Giampiero Judica.

Cecilia’s warm welcome quickly turns into a nightmare when it becomes clear that her new home harbors a sinister secret and unspeakable horrors. As revealed in the trailer, Cecilia arrives in Italy after having experienced something brutal and violent in her past. She takes refuge in faith and in the convent to try to understand what God wants from her, but everything begins to change when it is revealed that she is pregnant.
Since there is no way to explain her pregnancy, everyone believes and accepts that it is a miracle, but this revelation goes hand in hand with a series of disturbing events, which put Cecilia in danger, along with the rest of the nuns of her convent and leads her to doubt whether this is a miracle or something darker. What if God is not the one behind this “miracle”? Immaculate makes it clear that nothing here is what it seems and that in this convent there are many secrets that its inhabitants would prefer not to come to light.
