In June 2019, it was revealed through a local Louisiana newspaper that 17-year-old Anthony Templet had confessed through a call to the police that he had just killed his father after shooting him three times. The young man commented that he had done this tragic event in self-defense since he had had an altercation with his father, who was drunk and behaving aggressively. He primarily accused Anthony of being in contact with his ex-wife, Susan Templet.

What began as a case not so mediatic was soon the object of the eyes of the public stage. This is after Anthony’s half-sister, Natasha, recognized him as her relative who had been missing for 11 years. Through Wafb.com, Natasha explained that Anthony had been stolen from his mother in 2008 when the little boy was only 8 years old. The person responsible had been his father, Burt Templet.

“Burt and my mother were together for about ten years and it was extremely violent. I can only imagine what Anthony has been through. When he was a baby, Burt would hold him in his arms while he abused my mother.”

Their mother, Teresa Thompson, reported the disappearance of her son, whom she had been looking for for years. This is because Burt Templet took him with him to live in a distant state, where they could not be found. In addition, Burt isolated Anthony for years: he was not allowed to go to school or have contact with the outside world. According to Anthony’s lawyer, Jarrett Ambeau, through The Advocate, the young man had been “isolated and regularly abused by his father.”

Why Didn’t Anthony Templet Go To Jail?

After Anthony Templet confessed to having killed his father, he was subjected to a legal process, which would define the consequences of his actions. According to WAFB9, he was first charged with second-degree murder, but the charge was later reduced to manslaughter. It was ultimately concluded that the young man would not contest the charge of negligent homicide in the death of his father, Burt Templet. However, he would have to serve five years of supervised probation.

According to prosecutor Dana Cummings, this verdict was mainly because the young man had been denied the opportunity to be in the world, so being in jail would not have any beneficial effect on him:

“What would jail time do for this young man who has never really had a chance to learn or have friends or be in the world,” Cummings said. “What would that accomplish? I just think it would prevent him from being productive.”
