House of the Dragon: Who Is Vermithor, The Dragon That Appears in The Finale? Here Is The Story of Vermithor
House of the Dragon is over and has prepared us for next season, which will focus on the war between the two factions, the greens and the blacks. During the final episode, Daemon goes to the dungeons of Dragonstone’s castle where we are first shown Vermithor, one of the most beloved dragons of Fire and Blood readers.
Vermithor is a huge beast, a dragon ridden by King Jaehaerys Targaryen, a former ruler of Viserys. As we saw in the series finale, war is looming and the black faction, led by Rhaenyra, has a disadvantage when it comes to soldiers. Daemon, however, in the years in which the first season, full of time jumps, took place, gradually grouped a certain number of dragons in Dragonstone.
House of the Dragon: Here What We Know About Vermithor!
The scene in which Vermithor, nicknamed the Bronze Fury, is introduced is very evocative and shows Daemon wandering in the darkness of Dragonstone’s dungeons. As he approaches Vermithor, the Prince of Westeros sings an ancient Valyrian song. Here is the text:
Vallyriano
” Drakari pykiros
Tīkummo jemiros
Yn lantyz bartossa
Saelot vāedis”
“Hen ñuhā elēnī:
Perzyssy vestretis
Se gēlȳn irūdaks
Ānogrose”
“Perzyro udrȳssi
Ezīmptos laehossi
Hārossa letagon
Aōt vāedan”
“Hae mērot gierūli:
Se hāros bartossi
Prūmȳsa sōvīli
Gevī dāerī “
English translation
“Fire breather
Winged leader
But two heads
To a third sing”
“From my voice:
The fires have spoken
And the price has been paid
With blood magic”
“With words of flame
With clear eyes
To bind the three
To you I sing”
“As one we gather
And with three heads
We shall fly as we were destined
Beautifully, freely “
Who is Vermithor?
Vermithor is a bronze-coloured dragon that belonged to King Jaehaerys Targaryen. If you remember, Jaehaerys was that character we saw on the Iron Throne at the beginning of the series. Widely known as the noblest and most effective King Targaryen, Jaehaerys eventually surrendered the throne to Viserys, to the detriment of Rhaenys as a woman.
When Jaehaerys died, Vermithor was left without a horseman. It is said that he was one of the largest dragons around, with only Vhagar and Balerion larger than him. Vhagar is the dragon ridden by Aemond, while Balerion died before the start of House of the Dragon. This means that Vermithor is one of the two largest dragons in the realm and that if someone claimed him and fought for Rhaenyra, the Blacks would have a dragon that could compete with Vhagar.
In addition to being a very large dragon, Vermithor is also very old. When Daemon approaches him, the creature has been alive for about 100 years. What do you think of the latest episode of House of the Dragon? Have you already seen it? Let us know in the comments. This new series, which serves as a prequel to the events of Game of Thrones, adapts George RR Martin’s 2018 novel Fire and Blood to bring the beginnings of House Targaryen to the screen.
The Story of Vermithor
Vermithor is called The Bronze Fury, due to its sand and bronze chrome plating. He’s a 100-year-old dragon, but he’s still mighty with a massive blaze. It is one of the largest dragons in all of the Western Continent and its size is slightly smaller than that of Balerion, the largest dragon of all ridden by Aegon I the Conqueror and of Vhagar, the dragon of Laena Velaryon claimed followed by Aemond Targaryen.
In the tenth episode of House of the Dragon, you can get a better idea of how big Vhagar is compared to a normal dragon, as he flies over Arrax, ridden by Lucerys Velaryon. Consequently, just think that Vermithor is a little smaller than Vhagar.
King Jaehaerys I
Aegon I Targaryen is the first king of Westeros to start the ruling dynasty of the Targaryens by conquering the Seven Kingdoms. He is also the first of the house to have blood relations, as he marries both his sisters Rhaenys and Visenya. With the first, he has a son named Aenys and with the second another son named Maegor.
Upon Aegon’s death, Maegor claims his dragon Balerion while his mother Visenya claims the throne for him despite the direct heir being Jaehaerys, the son of Aenys. Maegor establishes a reign of tyranny and violence, tarnishing traditions and committing various crimes until one day he is found dead impaled right on the Iron Throne.
Finally, Jaehaerys, only fourteen years old, can take back the usurped position of ruler of the Seven Kingdoms and establishes a kingdom of peace that lasts for over fifty years until his death. So much so that subsequently he also obtains the title of Old King, precisely because of the longevity of his appointment with him.
The Relationship Between Vermithor and Jaehaerys
After the birth of Jaehaerys, the elder sister Rhaena places Vermithor’s egg in her cradle and after hatching, the dragon with the future king becomes inseparable. During the reign of Jaehaerys, the latter did not bother to create large defences or protections because Vermithor was enough for him to be safe. When Jaehaerys dies, Vermithor flies to Dragonstone and burrows to live in the Mount Dragon volcano, no longer allowing anyone to ride him. For this reason, it remains to be seen whether Daemon will be able to persuade the dragon to take part in their battle as descendants of Jaehaerys. And above all who will be able to ride Vermithor?
