House of the Dragon: Who Is The Crabfeeder And How Does It Affect The Targaryens
House of the Dragon introduces some familiar names, like Targaryens, Baratheons and Lannisters, but there are also new characters, and it is they who make this story more and more interesting. We’ve already met the Velaryons, seabenders who come from the city of Valyria, the Hightowers, a wealthy family seeking power, and the ancestors of the Starks, but the second installment of the series took us to the Stepstone Islands, where a strange character with a somewhat terrifying appearance appears.
In episode 1 of House of the Dragon a conflict arises between Viserys I Targaryen and his younger brother, Daemon, who makes fun of his dead son and ends up “banished”. In the second, Daemon causes even more trouble by stealing the dragon egg that belonged to the baby (the Targaryens place these eggs in cradles so that when dragons hatch, they develop a bond with their future rider like ducks do). when they come out of the egg and see their mothers).
Rhaenyra Targaryen seizes this opportunity to prove her worth, flying to Dragonstone to confront her uncle and retrieve what she took. With this, it is clear to Daemon that he will not be heir to the throne again, so this leads him to contact Corlys Velaryon (who intended to arrange a marriage between his young daughter and Viserys I) and make a plan to go to the Stepstone Islands.
House of the Dragon: Who is The Crab Feeder?
The first thing to know is that the Stepstone Islands are a chain of islands that are close to Dorne (where Criston Cole comes from), and a strategic point in the kingdom (in terms of trade) because the Narrow Sea and the Summer Sea intersect there, and trading ships must pass through here to reach many of the free cities. Having control of the Stepstones means more power and more money, which is something that any king or any noble family always needs. The biggest problem with the Stepstone is that it is a territory full of pirates.
Daemon and Corlys know how important it is to have control over territory, and this is part of what leads them to form their alliance, which is not yet fully explored in House of the Dragon. Chapter 2 does show The Crabfeeder, who is a character found on the islands. Crabfeeder is Craghas Dragar, who poses a serious problem to the pirates and the Triarchy (a group of Lys, Myr, and Tyrosh who invade the islands to fight the pirates and subdue them).
Viserys I sees him as an ally, though not exactly, as he helps control the pirates and get them out of the very important territory, but when Daemon starts seeking control of the islands, Crabfeeder, who in the series appears with a strange mask, he becomes a problem since he is more of a kind of mercenary who does nothing out of loyalty to the Targaryens, or any other of the powerful families.
The army of the Triarchy and Crabfeeder, whose nickname is a reference to the brutal techniques he uses, is more of a problem for Daemon and the plan he and Corlys Velaryon are beginning to develop. The books reveal a lot about what happens with this territory and with Daemon, but what you need to know (without giving too many spoilers) is that, in a war, having control of this part of the territory can mean an important advantage (for transporting resources, building alliances, and gaining more fortune), so when the Dance of Dragons comes around, Daemon needs the Stepstones under his control.
