House Of The Dragon: Who is Daemon Targaryen Played by Matt Smith?
House Of The Dragon launches on HBO Max next year, and takes place 200 years before the fall of the Iron Throne, when the Targaryens ruled. The teaser was unveiled by the broadcasting giant and gives a glimpse of Doctor Who and The Crown star Matt Smith as Prince Daemon Targaryen, younger brother of King Viserys and heir to the throne.
Who Is Daemon Targaryen In House Of The Dragon?
Daemon Targaryen was born to be an anti-hero. He was an experienced warrior, who conquered the Stepstones and proclaimed himself king. He wielded Dark Sister, a Valyrian steel blade and an ancestral sword of House Targaryen. And he was riding Caraxes, a fierce red dragon also called the Blood Wyrm.
In addition, he constantly desired power. While his brother ruled the throne, Daemon Targaryen built his influence in Port Réal, commanding the City Guard and familiarizing himself with all the alleys and brothels. He even considered himself the Prince of Dragonstone and the heir to Viserys before his brother named his elder, Rhaenyra, as his successor.
Not wanting to sit idle for long, Daemon Targaryen finally took matters into his own hands and made Rhaenyra his third wife. He was instrumental in his attempt to take control of the lands and kingdoms of Westeros and proclaimed himself Protector of the kingdom for good measure.
In many ways, Daemon Targaryen represents multiple Game of Thrones characters in one. Like Littlefinger, he is manipulative and made contacts in the brothels and dark corners of Flea Bottom, even becoming known as Lord Flea Bottom.
He took Mysaria as his lover, and she acted as a whisper mistress, providing valuable information long before Varys had her little birds. He was also a fierce warrior, a la Jaime Lannister, bravely leaping on the backs of dragons to fight without hesitation. And like many Game of Thrones characters before him, he seemed to die in battle. However, House of the Dragon might reveal that he didn’t go into a fire of glory after all.
