House of the Dragon: Who Are the Three Wild Dragons and Where Do They Come From?

Who Are the Three Wild Dragons: Dragons are part of the magic of House of the Dragon and those belonging to the Targaryens are not the only ones alive in the times of the series. In addition to dragons like Syrax, Caraxes, and Vermax, which belong to Rhaenyra Targaryen, Daemon Targaryen, and Jace Velaryon, some dragons have no riders, like Vermithor and Silverwing, because theirs died years ago, and others that are wild and have never been tamed by anyone.

In the Dance of the Dragons, whoever has the most dragons has a better chance of winning the war, and this leads Rhaenyra to hold “auditions” for riders, in a process known as The Sowing, to try to claim the rest of the free-flying dragons that do not currently belong to anyone. Vermithor and Silverwing are used to being ridden, but with wild dragons it’s different and it will be much harder to get any of them to agree to have a rider.

House of the Dragon: Who Are the Three Wild Dragons and Where Do They Come From?

The three wild dragons are known to have been born on Dragonstone, but they were not claimed by any riders and were not bonded to any of the Targaryen princes and princesses at the time of their birth, making them unpredictable and difficult to control. Some believe that wild dragons were already there before the Targaryens arrived, although others are also thought to have been born during the time of Jaehaerys I Targaryen, who was the rider of the dragon Vermithor. It is not actually known which dragons could be the parents of the three wildlings found on Dragonstone at the time of the Dance of the Dragons, which are the Sheepstealer, Grey Ghost, and The Cannibal, who is even more powerful than Vhagar.

Who is Sheepstealer?

The story of Sheepstealer, a brown dragon who was famous for stealing and eating sheep (although always without harming the shepherds), will be a little different in the series, or so it seems. In the books, Sheepstealer is claimed by an orphan named Nettles, who appears to have no connection to the Targaryens, but in House of the Dragon episode 2×6, it is Rhaena Targaryen who discovers the dragon is in The Vale, and that could indicate that she will be the one to claim the dragon and become its rider. Rhaena arrives to see a burned area near The Vale and Jeyne Arryn is the one who explains to her that it is a large and powerful dragon, but that it is also wild and that it seems to be hunting there due to the war that is taking place in other parts of the kingdom.

Who is Grey Ghost?

Grey Ghost is the most mysterious of the three dragons and that’s because he’s somewhat shy and prefers not to get close to humans if he can avoid it, so few people ever get to see him and no one ever gets close enough for anyone to have a chance to claim him. This is a grey dragon that remains wild throughout its life and, not having a companion, is not forced to participate in war.

Who is The Cannibal?

The Cannibal is the largest and most powerful of the three wild dragons. This dragon was named this because it had a habit of attacking and consuming other dragons, making it especially dangerous. This dragon never manages to be claimed and never has a rider, and even goes so far as to devour Silver Denys, who claimed to be the bastard son of Maegor I Targaryen, after he attempts to claim Sheepstealer during The Sowing.
