Heartstopper Season 2: Summary Recap
The first season of Heartstopper focused mainly on the birth of the relationship between Nick Nelson (Kit Connor), a popular boy and captain of the Truham Grammar School rugby team, and Charlie Spring (Joe Locke), a lanky, quiet student, already aware of his sexual orientation. A story not without its difficulties, especially at the beginning, which had to make its way through the prejudice of his schoolmates and the confusion of Nick himself, convinced until then that he was heterosexual. Season two picks up where season one left off: After coming out to his mother (Olivia Colman) as bisexual, Nick feels ready to share his romance with everyone in his life. However, coming out will not prove as easy as he would have expected and will represent a complex and important maturation journey for the boy. Meanwhile, we also continue to follow the lives, dreams, and heartaches of the newly born couple’s group of friends, Elle (Yasmin Finney), Tao (William Gao), Isaac (Tobie Donovan), Tara (Corinna Brown), Darcy (Kizzy Edgell) and Imogen (Rhea Norwood).
Nick and Charlie, more in love than ever and finally “boyfriends”, explore the joys of their relationship, not without colliding with some obstacles: Nick has not yet officially come out to everyone and the consequences of this lead him to wonder about the reasons for that it is so difficult, to be honest about one’s bisexuality; Charlie, aware of the pressure on Nick, feels terrified that her boyfriend will experience the bullying he has experienced. Tao, on the other hand, has to deal with the possibility that her friendship with Elle is jeopardized by her estrangement, while even the perfect couple formed by Tara and Darcy will have some problems on the sentimental front. However, the group of friends is about to set off to discover the most romantic city in the world:
Scripted (as was the first season) by Alice Oseman, mind, pen and creator of the beautiful graphic novel from which it takes its name and inspiration, the Heartstopper Season 2 is everything you could wish for and much more. When it comes to an influential and internationally successful project, as in the case of the British series that has won critical and public acclaim since its debut on Netflix, the fear is always the same: the following seasons will live up to it. any expectations? The answer this time is a resounding yes. Not only that, but we can also confirm that Heartstopper Season 2 aims to become the new comfort TV show par excellence and it succeeds very well. Following the various stages of falling in love with Nicke Charlie, even the viewer finds himself living a parallel love story, the one with the characters: if with the first part, we had an immediate lightning strike, with the second we learn to know and love them deeply through their weaknesses, fears, and defects that in our eyes make them even more special because they are sincere and real.
Finally, in the new 8 episodes the dynamics left out (not due to distraction but due to lack of time) in the first chapter are explored: the relationship between Tao and Elle, the relationship between Tara and Darcy, the figure of everyone’s silent friend Isaac, the families of Nick and Charlie, but what must be emphasized in this season is the skill with which what apparently could have seemed only backstories hid ideas for topics of profound relevance, treated with delicacy and humanity. Alice Oseman, class of ’94, with Heartstopper, has succeeded where many have tried and failed: by re-adapting the words of the comic strip with the mastery of a screenwriter who has already started in the field and with the help of Euros Lyn’s direction who keeps drama and humor perfectly in harmony, the second season makes you want to read more, to continue being part of the Paris Gang even when the colored credits appear on the black background of the screen, signaling the end of another episode.
Heartstopper Season 2 Ending Explained: Does Nick and Charlie Break Up?
Charlie’s parents get strict about her low grades and forbid her from seeing her boyfriend until she turns in her schoolwork, but they still manage to spend time together. But since problems are never lacking, David, Nick’s older brother, arrives and begins to ask too many questions. David’s bad comments provoke Nick’s anger and Charlie’s discomfort, upon returning home is punished by his parents, who threaten not to let him go on his end-of-year trip to Paris. Despite all these inconveniences, the couple passes the exams and prepares for the trip of their dreams.
During the prom celebration, Nick tries to tell his friends about his relationship with Charlie, but it’s impossible. Meanwhile, Elle applies to an art school, sparking Tao’s fear of losing her friends. After a heart-to-heart with his mother, Tao changes his mind and asks Elle out on a date. On the school trip to Paris, the protagonists of Heartstopper experience several romantic moments, but also some awkward ones: Nick’s father spends only a few minutes with them, and Ben threatens to win Charlie back. Finally, at Tara’s birthday party, Nick tells several of his classmates that he is dating Charlie.
Back from the trip, Nick and Charlie organize a dinner for their parents to meet, but David and Stephane’s comments ruin the moment. Tired of his behavior, Nick tells his father and brother that Charlie is his boyfriend and that he doesn’t care what they think about it. Later, Charlie confronts Ben about all the messages he sends her. Although his ex-boyfriend apologizes for all the damage he did to him, Charlie doesn’t forgive him but wishes him luck at his new school and asks him to treat his next partner better. Now that the important people in his life know about Charlie, Nick posts a picture of him with his boyfriend.
On the other hand, Elle hides from Tao that she was accepted to art school for fear of ruining their romance, however, when Tao finds out, he simply supports her. Isaac thinks she may be asexual, Mr. Ajayi and Mr. Farouk admit her feelings, and Darcy leaves her house after a fight with her mother. After the dance, where the protagonists of “Heartstopper” are the center of attention, Nick asks Charlie to tell him about the eating disorder that arose from his bullying. As Nick is about to tell Charlie that he loves him, his mother interrupts him. The second season of the Netflix series ends with Charlie leaving her boyfriend’s house and writing a message to Nick: “I Love You”.
If Nick and Charlie increased their chances together in season one, who would say in season two? Now, they realized the importance of coming together to reinforce everything they feel for each other. In a scene that is a key part of this season, Nick almost says “I love you” to Charlie. This just doesn’t happen because Nick’s mother arrives and disrupts the moment. In a text message, Nick tries to write this to Charlie and backs out. This same impasse is not experienced by Tara and Darcy. The point is, in this case, Tara is not reciprocated by saying that she loves Darcy. Quite the contrary: this leaves Darcy more distant from the relationship and considering a breakup. Darcy has been grappling with sensitive personal issues, with her mother throwing her out of the house after seeing her in the costume. Darcy tells Tara that he doesn’t feel like saying the same to her, as her focus has been just on motivating Tara to be more and more confident.
Safe Place, a project spearheaded by Elle, Charlie, Isaac, and Tao, is chosen for the exhibition. Elle’s skills draw attention to the point that she is selected for the Lambert School of Art. Tao is the happiest with everything as the two are dating. Tao just needs to deal with jealousy better, as Elle’s friendship with Naomi and Felix has made him uncomfortable. Also in this new movement, Isaac notices something different when he is with James. The two share a kiss, which ends up confusing their feelings even more. To the same extent, Isaac comes to understand better about asexuality, especially after reading a book called “Ace: What Asexuality Reveals About Desire, Society, and the Meaning of Sex”.
Finally, Imogen has realized that her life is taking a completely different direction from the others, with Imogem seeing the lows more and more frequently than the highs in her life. With each passing day, she understands less about herself. We begin season two with Imogem’s potentially toxic relationship with Ben. Lucky for her, the breakup will bring her closer to Nick, Charlie, and Sahar. About the latter, we see some clues that something else may be coming. But the answers will only be known if new seasons are ordered.
