Heartstopper Ending Explained: Do Charlie and Nick End Up Together?
A few days before the big event, which brings together girls’ and boys’ schools, Charlie quits the rugby team and is completely estranged from his friends. When Nick goes to their usual bench for lunch, he bumps into Tao, who isn’t exactly thrilled to see him. But it turns out to be a blessing in disguise for both of them, allowing the two key people in Nick’s life to talk things over openly. Later, Nick texts Charlie asking him to talk. Charlie almost answers, but doesn’t, continuing not to talk to her. On Friday, the girls’ school joins the boys’ school for their annual sports day. She is nervous but supported by her friends when she returns to the boys’ school after her transition.
She quickly reunites with her best friend Tao, whom she has developed feelings for. They end up meeting in the art room, where they almost share a kiss. While nothing is happening just yet, this is setting the stage for them to finally get together in Season 2.
In an attempt to reconnect with Tao, Charlie switches places with him to participate in the relay race. In doing so, he bumps into Ben, who can’t help but tease him. In a moment of pure victory, Charlie beats him in the race, then confronts him, telling him to leave him alone and stating “you have no right to have an opinion on what I’m doing”. It’s a beautiful moment for Charlie, who has spent far too long as a victim.
At the end of Season 1 of Heartstopper, it’s the big moment of the rugby match. Although Nick is the star player, his attention is on Charlie, who is standing on the sidelines. Finally, Nick completely abandons the game to approach Charlie, and when I thought for a moment that they were going to kiss in front of everyone, Nick tenderly takes her hand and leads her away.
In the hallway, Nick asks Charlie not to break up with him, and Charlie interrupts his desperate speech by kissing him. They spend the next day together, and Nick decides to come out, not in a big way, but he doesn’t want to have to hide anymore, and he wants to be able to tell the people who really matter who he really is. It begins with his mother. At the end of Season 1 of Heartstopper, she offers her support for him, as he enters this new phase of his life as a bisexual man. And if you don’t cry at the end of the episode, you don’t have a heart.
Elle And Tao Get Closer
Thanks to the sports party, Elle returns to the Truham Academy for a day. This also allows her to spend time with her friend Tao, whom she knows she is in love with. He has finally managed to make peace with Charlie: the protagonist apologizes for not having told him anything about the story with Nick and Tao apologizes for the impetuous words with which he denied the importance of their friendship.
Elle and Tao run through the classrooms, up to the art classroom. She asks Tao if school is terrible without her and he answers yes and reassures her: now she is fine and has clarified the previous differences. Elle takes Tao’s hand: she seems ready to confess her love for her, but at the last minute Elle thinks about it. This time, however, Tao seems to reciprocate her sentiment : perhaps he too begins to sense that he wants to be more than a friend to Elle.
Nick and Charlie’s Beach Trip
During sports day, Nick comes out in front of his classmates and takes Charlie by the hand, dragging him away from the rubgy game. His beloved of him has just resolved the disagreements with Ben, asserting himself after having suffered a lot for the insensitive and cruel words that the ex had addressed to him.
Tao explained to Nick that Charlie always thinks he is a burden to others. Nick has realized that Charlie would like to end their relationship. Nick knows that Charlie would like to leave him, worried about how much the relationship with him will cause him problems with friends who still don’t know about his bisexuality. The boy, who has asked him to keep the relationship a secret until he has his ideas sorted, seems ready to come out. Nick reiterates to Charlie that what he’ll have to go through – the giggles, the bullying, the personal attacks – will be worth it because he’s “her favorite person”:
I want us to be together, you are the one I love, I need you to believe me when I say this.
Charlie replies.
Nick, Nick, Nick … I believe you.
As they lay on the beach, Nick tells Charlie that he feels ready to come out. He’s pretty sure he’s bisexual, and while he’s not going to make public announcements, he wants people important to him to know about his relationship with Charlie and that he can do the same:
I like you so much … I like it as much as I like you.
Nick yells at the waves his love for Charlie, then, on the water’s edge, confirms that yes, he is her boyfriend. Nick picks up Charlie and carries him into the water, without letting him get wet.
Nick’s Coming Out
In the finale of the first season of Heartstopper Nick (Kit Connor) faces the difficult moment of coming out with his mother, that is “coming out”, voluntarily and without forcing third parties, about his own non-heterosexuality. In a very emotional dialogue the boy gradually opens up with his mother about his relationship with Charlie and the discovery of the fact that he is attracted to both boys and girls. As is often the case in Heartstopper, Nick makes tea in his cup, in the kitchen, while chatting with his mother Sarah (played by Olivia Colman), who is reading on her tablet:
Mom, you know Charlie is my best friend […]. He is my boyfriend. Charlie is my … boyfriend. I still like girls, but … I also like boys. Charlie and I … we go out together. I just wanted you to know.
Sarah just comments “oh, thanks for telling me”, hugs him and tells him he doesn’t have to “love girls too.” Nick then explains to her that he is bisexual, that is, that he is attracted to people of both genders. His mother asks him how long he has known he loves Charlie. Nick tells her that he and Charlie have been dating for a few months, but he has been feeling something for him long ago. With a montage, the series shows us all the salient moments of the relationship between the two: we thus discover that Nick was immediately fascinated by his boyfriend.
What Heartstopper Season 2 Will Be About
There doesn’t seem to be any big doubts about Heartstopper’s return with a second season. The official announcement of Netflix is still missing, but the response from the public seems excellent, moreover it is not a series that requires large budgets: the chances of seeing a season two are therefore high. We already know that in the second season Nick and Charlie will learn to live their relationship in the open, at least among their acquaintances and in the school environment. During the first season, one of the important themes of Alice Oseman’s later books is also suggested: the eating disorders that haunt Charlie.
When he is assailed by insecurity or when he goes through dark times, Charlie tends to stop eating: his relationship with food will prove very difficult, even with Nick by his side. Obviously in case a second season arrives we will also see the evolution of the friendly relationship between Tao and Elle.
