Grey’s Anatomy: Ending Explained The Episodes Of Meredith And Derek On The Beach And Their Explanation

In the seventeenth season of Grey's Anatomy Meredith fights against Covid and dreams of Derek on the beach: we analyze all the episodes in which they meet and their meaning.

Grey’s Anatomy season 17 brought a surprise reunion between Meredith and Derek, her beloved husband, who passed away several years earlier. It’s a peculiar year at the Seattle Gray Sloan Memorial. All doctors must face the Covid emergency that is rampant in the country. Among those affected is Meredith, who is incubated and quarantined. 

During her period of observation, the woman is suspended between life and death; this poised situation is represented by a symbolic beach, in which Meredith finds several familiar faces, relatives and friends who died years before. The most emotional encounter is the one with Derek Shepherd, the love of his life. We retrace their moments on the beach in Grey’s Anatomy 17.

What Episode Does Meredith See Derek In?

At the end of the second episode of season 17, Meredith passes out on the ground outside the hospital. In later moments we see her on a beach, probably as part of a dream. And it is here that she sees her deceased husband who, smiling, calls her. Meredith is surprised, but she still can’t reach him.

All The Episodes On The Beach With Meredith And Derek And What They Mean

Derek Shepherd appears in a total of 4 episodes of season 17. After making an appearance on Meredith in the second finale, Derek returns in the third episode. Doctor Gray still intubated due to the Covid that hit her, dreams of reaching him; runs towards him, stumbles and falls. Derek laughs under his mustache. Angry, Meredith stands up with a smile, jokingly telling him that she hates him.

It seems impossible for Gray to reach her husband, so Derek explains:

The beach represents a kind of Limbo: in reality in the hospital, Meredith is suspended between life and death. If she decides to let go, then stop fighting and abandon herself to Covid, Meredith will be able to reach her beloved deceased Derek.

The distance between the two in fact begins to shorten already in the eighth episode in which, in another dream sequence, he explains how he can get closer. Derek reminds her of her daughter Zola and her difficulty and awkwardness in being able to ride a bike. Likewise, he encourages her not to give up:

Meredith relaxes, takes a deep breath and her attempts seem to work: Derek has taken a few steps in her direction. It’s a sign that Dr. Gray is starting to give up in the hospital. The season finale, episode 16 is the decisive one. Still on the beach, the two look back on the good old days and talk about marriage, laughing and joking with each other. At one point, Derek realizes he has to let her go: Meredith has to wake up. She has to fight for herself and their children:

Derek and Meredith appear together on the beach for the last time in their wedding attire. It is the symbol of a promise they make Meredith must continue to fight to get her life back, and also live for the man she loved, and who will always remain her husband. Her only love, the first for which she put herself on the line and decided to start a serious relationship.
