Goodbye Movie

Goodbye Critics Review: By Taran Adarsh, Komal Nahta, Anupama Chopra

‘Goodbye’ means goodbye, many times we do not get the last chance to say this to our loved ones. If it remains, then just regress. I wish it had been done at that time. The film is only about giving that last goodbye to someone. There are some flaws but still, I would say that it should be seen. If you are a fan of Amitabh and Rashmika and if you like family drama, then definitely watch this film.

“Mumma ne sirf right turn liya hain. Woh chalti rehte hain, lekin humein dikh nahin rahi,” says a character in this Vikas Bahl directorial. In a similar way, the film too moves with its share of ups and downs. Thankfully, at the end of it, we see the larger message that it has in store for us. It reminds us of Haruki Murakami’s popular lines, ‘Death is not the opposite of life, but a part of it.’ We give 3 stars out of 5 to Amitabh Bachchan-Rashmika Mandanna’s Goodbye.

All one is left thinking is when is ‘GoodBye’ going to end and why the need to connect all dots and give answers to everything? Sometimes, filmmakers should trust the intelligence of their audience and leave something for them to take away from a piece of art rather than spoon feed catharsis to an extent that we walk away as empty-headed and unaffected as the time one walks into the theatre to watch a film.

If you’ve reached until the end of this Goodbye review, you’d know that this is a film that must be watched, and must be watched with your entire film. It has little moments of joys, some that make you think how life is short, and most of them, that will make you want to go home and hug your parents, or give them a call right away. It is the kind of film that’s all heart, and is a sob-fest but also has ample of moments that will make you laugh through the tears.

Goodbye is embedded with solid emotional moments, a few chuckles and some nice ponderings upon life, love and everything inbetween. With its heart in the right place, the film is perfectly efficient and likable in both jerking tears and soliciting laughs.

The forced humour surrounding the mourning is both distasteful and annoying. The ‘modern-day’ pandit at Haridwar, played jovially by Sunil Grover, perks things up a bit, but is again a device to impart lessons to the youngsters, who, predictably, learn to smile rather than growl at each other. Finally, what you take away is the flavour of the relationship between an older man and a younger woman, the way they found each other, and the loneliness of the one left behind. My eyes welled up in a few places.

Our verdict? Goodbye is filled with heartwarming and heartbreaking moments. The unfiltered emotions in the film touch the right chord and even bring you closer to your loved ones. If you have lost someone dear recently, be prepared to shed some tears. Take a quick loo break if you feel emotions deeply and can’t cry in public. You would understand why we use the word ’emotions’ so many times when you watch Goodbye. Vikas Bahl will leave you with many questions as you exit the theatres.

Perhaps the only bright spot in this misfire is Bachchan’s performance as the man struggling to confront a future without his too-good-to-be-true wife. The famous Bachchan monologue here emerges in the form of a heartbreaking plea to an urn of ashes – a smart subversion of legend, especially because the Bollywood superstar somehow finds a way to shed those trappings and sound different (a cracked voice; a quivering lip) after all these decades. It reveals a desire to keep learning at an age most actors succumb to the muscle-memory of their craft. He turns Harish into the only flesh-and-blood person in a film full of cutouts and algorithmic writing. Unfortunately, his parts are much lesser than the sum of this non-committal narrative. Which is to say: Goodbye takes that right turn only to swerve into a cow on a crowded street. I did hear plenty of sniffles and sore throats in the cinema hall. So I promptly put my mask back on.

Goodbye will make you shed copious tears all right but leave you none the wiser about the act of processing of pain and tiding over it. The performances, despite Amitabh Bachchan headlining the cast, are rudimentary. The writing, while achieving an occasional sharp twinge, is inconsistent and aimed at the easily swayed.Goodbye is crafted to deliver an unabashed workout for the lachrymal glands. Its grievously shallow methods undermine its avowed purpose.

Goodbye is not an easy watch if you have lost a parent or are dealing with an ailing one. The thought is universal and moves you to tears but the execution struggles to establish a tone. The film shuttles between moods and past-present with multiple characters thrown in and stringing it all together feels episodic and scrambled. The story oscillates between some heart-warming moments and then something random. The conflict between the family members is more Baghban than Piku, though it tries to lean towards the latter. The story also feels stagnant beyond a point.

On the whole, GOODBYE works due to the touching moments, relatability factor, and performances. However, the film suffers due to the bizarre developments, weak second half, and depressive tone. At the box office, it will turn out to be an average fare.

Goodbye is not a Queen or a Super 30, but it’s not even a Shaandaar. Vikas Bahl takes us on an emotional roller-coaster with Amitabh Bacchan heading it with his fantastic performance. You can surely watch Goodbye at least once with your family and don’t forget to carry some tissue boxes with you.

Goodbye is a movie that does what it intends to regardless of the flaws that get overshadowed by emotions. It is also an art if you observe. If you can ignore them too, go for it and feel the pain of losing and the way to mend your heart.

The emotional roller-coaster will make you smile, laugh and cry with every character making a special place in our hearts. The film deserves a special mention for the beautiful montages, which showed us the emotional and wonderful relationship of Harish and Gayatri.

To sum it up, Vikas Bahl will wow you with his writing and direction. The subtle fun moments with equally impacting emotional scenes, Goodbye offers a complete package. The film’s impressive plot and scripting are easily highlighted without any compromise on offering quality content. While some aspects might feel illogical in this satirical piece, the film can be easily enjoyed by all generations.
