Golden Globes 2025 Winners: Emilia Perez and Shogun Triumph Nothing to Do For Vermiglio?
An evening of substantial balance, that of the Golden Globes 2025, held on Sunday 5 January at the Beverly Hilton Hotel in Los Angeles: the prizes of the foreign press residing in Hollywood saw many of the most popular names triumphs on the eve: with 4 statuettes, ‘numerical winner ’ of the event, on the cinema front, was the most launched Emilia Pérez by Jacques Audiard, who divided the cinematographic honors with The Brutalist by Brady Corbet. The surprise of the evening was the victory of Demi Moore for Best Actress in a comedy film for The Substance, at the expense of highly rated names such as Mickey Madison, Cynthia Erivo, and Karla Sofia Gascòn. Nothing to do even for The Wild Robot, beaten by the ”underdog” Flow in the category of Animation. But here is the complete list of the winners.
Emilia Perez Traveled with the Wind in the Stern, with ten nominations and four awards won, and the same happened, in the TV series category, to Shogun, which also won the prestigious Golden Globe for Best Drama Series. There were more surprises among the prizes awarded to the interpreters. Self-Adrien Brody was given as a favorite already on the eve, Fernanda Torres’s figurine as best actress in a drama film was not at all obvious (she had to deal with Angelina Jolie, Nicole Kidman, Kate Winslet, Tilda Swinton, and Pamela Anderson), nor that of Sebastian Stan as best performer in a comedy or musical film.
On the TV series front, to dominate is Shogun, the sumptuous historical saga set in feudal Japan that was awarded four Golden Globes, including one for the best drama series. Baby Reindeer, Richard Gadd’s autobiographical story about his experience with a stalker, is the best miniseries (and actress Jessica Gunning also receives the prize). Hacks, the story of a legendary comedian and her pupil, gets the prize for the best television series in the comedy genre. IS Wicked? The story of the two friendly-enemy witches of The Wizard of Oz is a bit of the Barbie of 2025: with all the commercial success and the great certificates of esteem to the actresses and the praises of the film, some prizes were expected. Instead, as for the film phenomenon with Margot Robbie, nothing. Just a Golden Globe for the best box office result. Little stuff.

Adrien Brody, who interprets the architect protagonist of The Brutalist is the best dramatic actor while Brady Corbet, who spent seven years working on the film (which lasts three hours), wins as the best director. Brody is moved to compare his character, a survivor of the Shoah who arrived in America in search of a better life, to the journey undertaken by his mother, also a Hungarian immigrant. «I don’t know how to fully express all the challenges you have faced and experienced, and the many people who have struggled to immigrate to this country », she says. “I hope this job manages to cheer you up a bit and give you voice”.

The biggest twist of the evening, however, is the victory of Fernanda Torres as best actress in a drama movie with I’m Still Here. The prize already seemed to be awarded to Nicole Kidman, in the CEO version with the young lover who gives her orders like a puppy (literally) in Babygirl, or as an alternative to Angelina Jolie, perfect in the role of the divine Callas in Maria. Instead, she defeats all of Torres, with her heartbreaking interpretation of a woman whose husband is kidnapped and made to disappear by the police during the military dictatorship in Brazil.
In the best actress category in a comedy – the fieriest of this edition – it is to tick it, Demi Moore, with his role in The Substance, the horror tale of French director Coralie Fargeat, in which the 62-year-old American actress interprets an ex-Holly Glory dedicated to a youthful serum, which generates a double of herself rejuvenated, with destructive impulses. A rematch for Demi Moore, snubbed for a long time by auteur cinema: “Thirty years ago a producer told me that I was a popcorn actress (from Blockbuster, editor’s note)”, he says in the award acceptance speech. “I pretended nothing. I could make hit movies that made a lot of money, but I couldn’t be rewarded, and it was like that for me. But over the years this has hurt me … A few years ago, I thought that maybe it was the right time. Maybe I had done what I had to do”. Her powerful interpretation made her beat the transgender actress Karla Sofia Gascon of Emilia Perez and young Mikey Madison of Anora.
The award winner who cries the most is Zoe Saldana, overwhelmed with emotion as she withdraws from the Golden Globe for best actress in a comedy, won thanks to the role of the lawyer who helps a Mexican drug dealer start a new life and turn into a woman in the musical-thriller Emilia Perez. “My heart is full of gratitude to the Golden Globes for celebrating our film”, he says on stage in tears. More ironic instead Kieran Culkin, designated best-supporting actor for A Real Pain, a dramatic comedy about two American Jewish cousins who go to Poland to learn about the history of their family: thanks his wife for “having endured what you call my mania”.
