Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire continues the story of Godzilla vs. Kong: does the sequel leave room for the possibility of turning this kaiju crossover into a real trilogy? If you want to know the answer, below are SPOILERS that explain what happens at the end of Godzilla x Kong, whether there is a clear path to a sequel, and what this threequel would be about.
Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire: The Story Plot
The story of Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire centers on the characters from Godzilla vs. Kong, Dr. Ilene Andrews (Rebecca Hall), her adopted daughter Iwi Jia (Kaylee Hottle), Titan conspiracy podcaster Bernie Hayes (Brian Tyree Henry), and of course, Kong and Godzilla. Andrews and Bernie (with new allies like Dan Stevens as the zoologist Monarch Trapper) are trying to solve the mystery of what mysterious signal from deep within the Hollow Earth is calling Jia, Kong, and Godzilla – and it turns out to be another tribe of Iwi who live in the “underground” realm of the Hollow Earth. The Iwi ask for help to save their tribe from a warring tribe of giant apes, led by the cruel “King Skar,” who commands the ice-breathing Kaiju, Shimo, who caused Earth’s ice age last time to break into the surface realm. Kong must convince Godzilla to put aside their feud as Alpha and unite their power against Skar King and Shimo, or the Hollow Earth and the surface will be doomed.
Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire Ending Explained
At the film’s climax, Godzilla and Kong put aside their differences and head to the underground section of the Hollow Earth for a showdown with Skar King, Shimo, and the Ape Tribe. Jia helps fulfill an Iwi prophecy by awakening Mothra to help Godzilla and Kong. Together, the Titans, Iwi, and Monarch scientists kill Skar King and free Shimo from his cruel enslavement. The epilogue of Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire sees balance restored. Godzilla resumes his reign as protector of the surface, taking up residence in Rome’s Colosseum; Kong finds a new home and a new family by conquering Skar King’s tribe of giant apes living in the underground Hollow Earth, with Shimo as a willing and loyal ally. Monarch scientists Ilene and Trapper return to the surface, with Jia choosing to remain with Ilene and not the Iwi, while Bernie reconsiders exposing all the wonders of the Hollow Earth to the world.
Towards the end of the film, Godzilla manages to defeat Tiamat to absorb the radiation from her lair. Then, Kong sees the opportunity for the Japanese monster to help him in his battle against Skar King, so he confronts him in Cairo (just as we had seen in the promotional images). The fight appears to end with a victory for Godzilla, but Mothra manages to intervene to convince him to help Kong in the confrontation to come. In this way, we see the trio fighting against Skar King, his tribe, and Shimo in the Hollow Earth… reaching the Brazilian city of Rio de Janeiro. There, Shimo begins to induce a second Ice Age on the orders of the Skar King, endangering the entire planet. Then, amid uncertainty, Suko destroys the crystal with which Shimo is being controlled by the villain. Thus, completely freed, Shimo freezes Skar King to death, and, finally, Kong shatters his great enemy’s body into thousands of pieces. He achieved the expected victory!
After the arduous battle, Godzilla returns to rest in the ancient Roman Colosseum, while Mothra, for her part, restores the protective barrier of the Iwi home. It should be noted that Kong decides to return to the Hollow Earth, alongside Shimo and Suko. Thus, our favorite primate monster becomes the new leader of the great apes, finds the family he was looking for so much, and it is inferred that he acquires the official title of “King” Kong. And what happened to humans? Well, the biggest problem throughout the movie was figuring out if Jia would stay with Dr. Ilene Andrews or decide to go with the Iwi. In that sense, it is revealed that the little girl preferred to accompany her adoptive mother. And on the other hand, Bernie and Trapper become best friends. This scenario only suggests that a new installment of the “MonsterVerse” could explore more details of this reality. At least, that’s what director Adam Wingard suggests.
How Godzilla x Kong Sets up Godzilla vs. Kong 3?
Godzilla x Kong makes it clear that there’s a lot more to the Hollow Earth to learn about than what we’ve seen in these films. The TV series spinoff Monarch has already revealed a “junction” point between the Hollow Earth and the surface, where time dilation turns minutes below into years above; we now know that there are levels of the Hollow Earth that go deeper than even Kong or Godzilla knew. All in all, the Monsterverse franchise has built enough story for Godzilla vs. Kong 3 to explore everything from what else is hidden in the Hollow Earth to looking back at otherworldly threats like the alien Ghidorah, and why he ever came to Earth in the first place. Toho’s Kaiju universe still has a good roster of monsters to draw from, especially if a character like Shimo is used as the main villain. Story-wise, Kong now has an entire family to protect, while Godzilla has an entire world to defend. Monarch’s human characters are also forced to hide among the natural and cultural wonders of the Hollow Earth from the plundering surface world and defend humanity from new threats from the Titans, including Godzilla.
