Ghostbusters Afterlife Post-Credit Scenes, Here’s What Happens
If you’ve come this far, let’s assume you’ve read and reread the spoiler warning and aren’t interested in spoiling the surprise or have already seen the scene. If not, we renew the warning: BEWARE OF SPOILERS!
Ghostbusters Afterlife First Post-Credit Scene
The first scene, the mid-credit, is in effect a throwback to the first film when we first met Dr. Peter Venkman (Bill Murray), when he was evaluating / testing the extrasensory perception of two of his students. They both have to guess the contents of a card they hold in their hand with the back of the card facing them, and the student with the wrong answer is hit by a small electric shock.
In the now famous scene from the 1984 film, Venkman “eliminates” the male student – who actually guesses the contents of the card – for the benefit of the cute student who actually had the wrong answer.
This time, Venkman from across the desk. It is he who is connected to the device that gives the shock and on the other side we find Dana Barrett (Sigourney Weaver). Peter, even if he correctly identifies the contents of the card, is still struck by the electric shocks, the reason is soon explained: Dana suspects Dr. Venkman and in the end she is right, the man has marked the cards.
Ghostbusters Afterlife second Post-Credit Scene
The second scene is a touching tribute to the great Egon Spengler (beloved Harold Ramis, who passed away in 2014) which references a deleted scene from the 1984 film. In the scene, which takes place just before the team goes to face Gozer at New York City, Janine Melnitz (Annie Potts) is talking to Egon Spengler and gives him a coin. Egon asks what it is and she replies that it is a souvenir from the 1964 Universal Exposition in Flushing Meadows.
The coin is his lucky coin and he wants Egon to have it, but he doesn’t want to take it because he is not sure to return. She insists, because she has another one at home.
The scene then shows us Janine in the present, coin in hand, and talking to Winston Zeddemore (Ernie Hudson) about her past with the team. Zeddemore tells what he has been doing all this time away from the Ghostbusters and his plans. The scene changes again and shows us the first Ghostbusters headquarters in New York City – the fire station.
The doors of the station open and the Ecto-1 enters, Zeddemore is pervaded by nostalgia and strokes the iconic vehicle, which has seen better days. Does Zeddemore want to bring the Ghostbusters back to life or does he just want to fix the car? We will never know, but the final scene after the credits in Ghostbusters Afterlife really opens up so many possibilities.
Ghostbusters Afterlife Post-Credit Scenes Explained
After seeing the two scenes, we can certainly categorize them into two different categories, or rather two different objectives.
While the mid-credits scene (the first) serves as a fun little throwback to the original film, the second post-credit scene from Ghostbusters: Afterlife (the second) suggests a broader look at the Ghostbusters franchise. While there have been no announcements of any kind, this scene hints at possible future developments (maybe a sequel?) That are sure to thrill both longtime and newer fans alike.
