Firefly Lane Season 2 Ending Explained: Did Tully Find Her Father? What Disease is Kate Suffering From?
In this article, we explain the ending of Firefly Lane Season 2 Spoilers Alert! The first season of Firefly Lane made the biggest hit on Netflix early last year and has (obviously) been renewed by the streaming service for a sequel. After much waiting, the first part of the second season has finally been made available and is being equally talked about. The story of the series, which is worth remembering, revolves around the friendship between Tully and Kate, who met in 1974, when they were still pre-teens, and lasts until the present day. A serious betrayal, however, rocks both their lives and threatens to tear them apart forever.
A wealthy journalist and famous talk show host, Tully is a true mix of personalities, often charming but also ambitious, reckless and loyal. Much of this is the result of scars from a traumatic childhood, which causes her to be haunted by her inner loneliness. The second season is getting a lot of attention, and of course, we’ll be talking about it here in the Series Guide. In this publication, we will understand what happened in the first phase and even explain the end of this creepy and contagious plot!
Firefly Lane Season 2: Plot Summary
Maggie Friedman, already behind the scenes in series that spoke of sisterhood and friendship between women such as Eastwick and The Witches of the East End, has temporarily set aside the magic with Firefly Lane. Instead, she focused on the friendship between women with no powers other than those of survival in a world of men, apparently difficult to maintain over the years, and with a nod to stories such as My Brilliant Friend, in which one of the two is always a bit envious of the other, including boyfriends. The two protagonists of this story are strengthened by the known and loved faces of their interpreters, Katherine Heigl (whom we know from Grey’s Anatomy and who is Tully Hart) and Sarah Chalke (Scrubs, who is Kate Mularkey). However, the two manage to remain friends, through ups and downs, over the decades only up to a certain point in their history, as the finale of the first season had anticipated.
And it is from there that Firefly Lane Season 2 picks up, from the deep crisis between Tully and Kate, outside a church for a funeral. Whose? How much time has passed? And what could have ever happened to push them away so much after all the great difficulties they had overcome in 30 years? The new 9 episodes will try to answer these and other questions, waiting for the final ones to arrive with the New Year. The now-tested narrative scheme is always the same: time jumps back and forth, to tell the evolution (now also involution) of the relationship between Kate and Tully and between them and those around them.
Firefly Lane Season 2 Ending Explained: The Beginning of A Pact
The story shows Tully as a teenager arriving home and finding her mother, Cloud, and a group of friends having a party. Everyone involved was using drugs and didn’t intend to leave, not even when the young woman got a call from her mother’s parole officer stating that she is on her way to visit. Tully kicks out all of her mother’s friends, except one who is dead (or just unconscious) – with Kate’s help, she drags him to a closet under the stairs, since nothing can interfere with the time of the visit of the security officer Cloud conditional. Nothing but herself, since when he’s about to arrive she’ll be high again, much to everyone’s dismay. It is against this background of confusion that Kate and Tully decide to take care of each other forever to have sweet moments together.
A Cruel Doubt
The series also shows the beginning of their careers both Kate and Tully. The first one prepares to go on vacation with her new boyfriend but is surprised by the appearance of Johnny, who takes her some scarves with glasses so that she can see clearly in her escape. This leads her to wonder if this is some kind of sign that she shouldn’t go to Europe and to question whether Johnny is still in love with her. Tully says he believes so, but says he thinks their relationship is still a dead end, as he can’t give her the marriage and family she’s always dreamed of. Tully says that if Johnny wanted Kate he would have made a grand gesture, which convinces her friend to leave for the airport. After they leave, the boy is convinced that he should have done something bold, since his goal is to get Kate back.
Friends Forever, But Brigades…
Jumping forward to 2004, the series shows a Thanksgiving where Kate and Tully don’t speak to each other but make the most of the holiday. The first one even gets tense when hearing her friend’s name and is approached by Johnny in the kitchen. The man suggests that they get married again, as they are now reunited. The young woman hesitates and claims that she doesn’t want to spoil what is being a nice moment, which leads Johnny to suspect that she is only averse to the idea because she is at odds with Tully (which she denies). But the day still has a bad surprise in store for her, as she finds her father dead on the couch just as she is about to offer him tea.
On Tully’s side, the woman tries to explore her domestic side and prepares a turkey to eat with her mother, which does not work out very well. They are joined by Danny, who shows up to escape his girlfriend’s family, and head out for pizza after the turkey proves to be a bad idea. Kate’s father’s funeral, in turn, has an uncomfortable moment, with a fight between her and Tully, who decides to leave the place and drive to the house where she lived with her mother as a teenager. Kate and Johnny, meanwhile, talk about a conversation in the kitchen, which makes him regret Tully’s unexpected appearance. The woman says that, even though she misses the journalist, she thinks she needs to find a new friend, someone she hasn’t spent the last 30 years with.
A New Relationship, But Not Like the Old One…
The year is 2005 and Kate decides to take a course at a local college, where she meets the new friend she’s been waiting for. Only the two get closer, but the same chemistry that there was with Tully doesn’t roll. At the same time, she has something to be proud of, as her married life with Johnny has been quite happy. Tully, in turn, decides to renovate her old house and continues to improve her domestic side. On Thanksgiving Day, she invites both her mother and Danny and his girlfriend to show them the “new” place that is being built. Also showing off her talent in the kitchen, she gives Cloud the house key as a gift.
Danny asks if Tully is with anyone, and the young woman says that she is dating herself. That’s when the boy talks about a teacher who is filming a documentary and needs an ambassador, suggesting a rapprochement between the two if the protagonist is interested in the project. Meanwhile, on Kate’s Thanksgiving Day – her first since losing her father – her mother reveals that Tully is fixing up her old house down the street, which causes the woman to divert the subject right away instant, even though I’m dying of longing.
At school, with her new friend, she mentions that one of her nipples is itchy, and lifting her shirt, makes the woman uncomfortable which surprises her. The two passes by Tully, Danny and the teacher mentioned by him and look at each other in a melancholy way, but prefer to maintain the deafening silence that says it all. The conversation with the professor and Tully has promising paths, as she agrees with the project and agrees to travel to an Antarctic facility for months. She and Danny embrace when the boy comments that the reunion with Kate must have been difficult – which was explicit at the time.
A Christmas of Changes…
At Christmas of the same year, Johnny asks Kate to marry him with a beautiful wedding ring as they decorate the tree. She agrees to get married and, despite wanting to call Tully to tell her the news, she decides to call her new friend, not getting the joyful reaction of happiness she expected. At the same time, Tully’s trip to Antarctica is approaching and Danny goes to his friend’s penthouse to say that he will miss her. She, in turn, will say that he is her emergency contact for the trip, which marks a change since Kate has always played this role with her and vice versa.
The end of the first part of the second season is heading with Kate discovering a severe rash on her breast after the physical symptoms already manifested. She is diagnosed with a rare stage 3 cancer, which forces her to start treatment immediately. She misses her friend in this time of pain and suffering and runs to Tully’s penthouse to see her. However, it is too late, as the woman is already in the elevator going down to the lobby and preparing to leave for Antarctica, which leaves Kate crying alone in the hallway.
