Euphoria Season 2: Is Ashtray Really Dead? Could Ashtray Come Back In Season 3?

Here are spoilers for the Euphoria season 2 finale, read no further if you haven’t seen it yet. Season 2 of Euphoria ended with a fight on stage, an arrest, and a raid on Fezco’s (Angus Cloud) home, just as he was preparing to go see the play Lexi had been preparing for months, all ending in tragedy. Faye told Fezco that something was going to happen, but Ashtray (Javon Walton) had already sensed that there was a traitor in their midst, killed him and locked himself in the bathroom with an arsenal of weapons. He wasn’t going to give up without a fight and he wasn’t going to let his older brother go to prison for a crime he didn’t commit, so as soon as the police entered his house he started shooting like crazy and officers responded with the same force.

Is Ashtray Really Dead

Fezco was shot and ended up on the ground, Faye was handcuffed, and when the door opened, Ashtray played dead for a surprise attack, killing a police officer in the process. The last we see of Euphoria’s psychopathic child is the red dot of a gun’s laser running through his body and settling in the center of his forehead, then only a single shot is heard. Everything points to Asthray being shot down and dead, but can we trust what we hear and where the red dot went at the end?

Is Ashtray Really Dead?

Just before the shot, the camera pans away from Ashtray to Fezco on the floor, watching from the hallway. This means that even though the spot is where he was, we’re not entirely sure what happened, we don’t know where exactly the shot landed, and we didn’t see Ash again. Also, we did not see a body, blood or body bag coming out of that house. Perhaps we might think that the creators of Euphoria made that scene that way to avoid showing a brutal and bloody image related to a child, but this is Euphoria, it is HBO and they have never hidden details simply because they are difficult to see.

We saw a full frontal of Cal, who refused to cover up while telling his family how sorry he was for her, we saw sex scenes, Ash burying a knife in the traitor’s neck, drug use and a lot of violence (we saw Nate threatening Maddy with a gun), so it would be weird if they made the decision not to show Ash’s ending just to protect us.

The Season 1 Finale

Something similar happened at the end of season 1 , where we saw Rue have what seemed to be an overdose and be on the verge of death, almost going through hell like Dante in The Divine Comedy, but, in that case, it was not final either and the special chapters confirmed that Rue was not dead, she did have a relapse, but that was rather a wake-up call for her to start reflecting and so that she could get to the point where we left her in the last episode of season 2, sober and feeling better than ever.

Ashtray had a bigger role this season, we got to know her story and how she came into Fezco‘s life, and with that she’s become a favorite. This doesn’t guarantee anything in the series, but it does mean that it’s possible that Sam Levinson and his team will change their minds at the last moment, take advantage of the uncertainty of the ending and decide to leave Ash critically injured and recovering in a hospital, only to be taken to prison.
