Dune: Part Two: 5 Things We Can’t-Wait to See in Part 2
All members of the veritable legions of fans of the sci-fi universe know very well that the source material created by Herbert is simply brilliant: enthusiasm is sky-high, as there are many key moments in the second half of the book that which the blockbuster will inevitably have to explore. To highlight some of these particular sequences in the book, we have created this short ranking of the 5 expected crying moments in the film. WARNING, SPOILERS FOLLOW: everything you read in the article may contain spoilers for the upcoming film. So, if you haven’t read the book, proceed at your own risk.
Paul Rides the Sandworm for The First Time
Snippets of this moment have already been shown in the trailers for Dune: Part Two, but it will be a unique experience when the scene is projected in all its magnificence on the big screen. As Paul begins to familiarize himself with the Fremen, the people hidden in the caves of the desert of Arrakis, one of the most spectacular things he must do is ride one of the legendary worms of the Sands of Arrakis. The first film demonstrated just how terrifying these creatures can be, but the sequel will have the opportunity to show them in a new light, revealing their symbiotic existence with the Fremen, and it will be fascinating to see Paul carry out this thrilling task. We recall that the worms of the Sands, in addition to their frightening appearance and their impressive size (400-450 meters in length), are mainly known for their larvae, responsible for the production of a precious substance known on the planet of Arrakis as “Spice”.
Paul and Gurney Halleck Reunite
Villeneuve’s Dune does not clarify Gurney Halleck’s fate: his last scene in the film shows him witnessing gigantic explosions and deciding to lead the soldiers into battle against the Sardaukar, soldiers fanatically devoted to the Padishah Emperor of House Corrino. The first film is ambiguous about his survival although, of course, all who have read the book know that Gurney survives and is brought back into the group of Atreides (the aristocratic dynasty that rules the planet Caladan) when Paul finds him operating as a smuggler.
This will surely be one of the most emotional moments of Dune: Part Two and it will be just amazing to see Paul and Gurney together again; however, there is another interesting aspect to Gurney’s return: he believes that it is Lady Jessica who has betrayed Duke Leto Atreides. Recall that Josh Brolin’s brief but intense performance as Gurney Halleck in Villeneuve’s film immediately won the hearts of fans, as well as critical acclaim.
Lady Jessica Drinks the Water of Life and Transforms
Thanks to her years of training with the Bene Gesserit (a powerful and esoteric matriarchal order whose members are all endowed with very great psychic and mental powers), Lady Jessica is already very powerful when we first meet her in Dune; however, her character will be at the center of a fundamental turning point in the second chapter, when she decides to take part in the Fremen rite known as the Water of Life to become their new Reverend Mother. This change in her character is sure to be phenomenally represented on the big screen in Villeneuve’s vision, as her process will unlock her genetic memory and connection to Bene Gesserit’s history. Other than that, it should be mentioned that there will also be an unexpected side effect.
The Character of Alia Atreides
We talked extensively about some aspects of the second film, as well as shown some images of the new film, however, one of the characters of Dune: Part Two remains completely shrouded in mystery: we are talking about Alia Atreides, the first pre-born Atreides, daughter of Duke Leto and Lady Jessica, and sister of Paul. To date nothing has been revealed regarding Alia, although it is assumed that the sequel will remain faithful to the source material, showing us the character of her. Because Lady Jessica is pregnant with Alia when she drinks the Water of Life, the child is born with full Bene Gesserit powers and, at the age of two, demonstrates behaviors and knowledge far beyond her age. The character was significantly changed in David Lynch’s 1984 Dune where she is played by Alicia Witt, and many are curious to see how the 2023 film will tackle this essential part of the plot.
The Ruthlessness of Feyd-Rautha Harkonnen, the Villain Played by Austin Butler
During the making of Dune, Villeneuve chose not to introduce the character of Feyd-Rautha Harkonnen: for this very reason, many fans can’t wait to see the villain played by Austin Butler in action. Chances are his first scene will be his “rigged” gladiator battle from the book, which would be a perfect plot device to bring out all of his ruthlessness. Trailers have already confirmed that this sequence is featured in the film, and we can’t wait to see it in all its glory.
Right now fans of the novel are crossing their fingers and hoping that most, if not all, of these moments are present in the sequel adaptation; for the moment all we can do is look forward to the arrival of the film, whose release date is set for November 3rd. Recall that the film sees the ensemble cast of the first chapter of the saga confirmed, with Timothée Chalamet joined again by Rebecca Ferguson, Zendaya, Josh Brolin, Stellan Skarsgård, Dave Bautista, Charlotte Rampling, and Javier Bardem. The new characters, however, will be played by Christopher Walken, Florence Pugh, Austin Butler, Léa Seydoux, and Souheila Yacoub.
