Takatsuki is suddenly arrested for having savagely and for futile reasons beaten a boy he met in the park, at the exit from the show. The actor is taken away by the police shortly after revealing to Yusuke a lot of background about his relationship with Oto , the director’s wife who died two years earlier. Yusuke was aware of his wife’s infidelities but, while she was alive, he tried to ignore them. After the loss of a child, the thought of being left by his wife had become unbearable for him. After his wife’s death, however, many mysterious aspects of their relationship continue to haunt Yusuke. The interview with Takatsuki turns out to be painful, bitter but clarifying. All this takes place aboard the Saab 900 driven by Misaki, who listens silently to the exchange between men. In a multifaceted portrait of Oto emerges: after a conversation with Misaki, Yusuke seems convinced that Oto really loved him, but a part of her needed to seek another kind of satisfaction in the arms of other men, talking to them too. of her husband. Misaki also has to deal with her past: she reveals to Yusuke that her mother, who disappeared under a landslide that destroyed their home in Hokkaido, was mistreating her. The relationship between the girl and her mother was at times morbid: the woman had a second personality named Sachi and now she bullied her daughter, now she behaved like a younger sister to look after. After the show in Hiroshima (in which Yusuke is forced to participate as the protagonist to replace Takatsuki), the director asks Misaki to take him to see the place where her house stood, where the woman died, overwhelmed by a landslide. It is a very long journey from Hiroshima to Hokkaido, the northern island of Japan. Misaki accepts and drives throughout the night and a good part of the morning, while the two come to confess a terrible truth: to some extent, they are directly responsible for the death of Sachi and Oto. Misaki and Yusuke consider themselves murderers: they ignored the attempts of their loved ones to contact them, avoiding them on the fatal night of their death. If they had acted differently they could have saved them (or died with them). The emotional climax of the film occurs when Misaki and Yusuke embrace in the snow, among the rubble of what was probably Misaki’s house: the landslide and the thick layer of snow make the exact spot difficult to recognize.
The film ends with Misaki still driving Yusuke’s car : the man may have given it to him, or the two may be living together. We see her as she comes out of the supermarket where she has been shopping, with a mask on her face. Accompanying her is a big dog. The girl therefore fulfilled her wish that she had confessed to Yusuke to take a dog with her and she seems to have closed the deal with the past and taken back the reins of her life.
How Does Drive My Car End?
Yusuke convinces Misaki to drive from Hiroshima to Hokkaido, to see the remains of the house where the girl’s mother died. During the long drive, the two are finally able to confess to each other that they are partly responsible for the deaths of Oto and Sachi, coming to define themselves as killers. A silent hug in the ruins of the house seals their friendship.
In the final scene we see Misaki driving Yusuke’s car (who perhaps loaned it or gave it to him) to do the shopping. She has a large Labrador dog with her, a sign that she has fulfilled one of her dreams of her and has managed to take her life in hand.
Who is Sachi in Drive My Car?
