Overall Critics Ratings: 3.5/5 (three and a half stars) [yasr_overall_rating size=”large”]
Drishyam was a hit in Hindi as well and now Drishyam 2 is also on the same path. The real star of the movie Drishyam 2 is its tight storyline. Although the initial part of the film seems a bit slow in the original film, in its remake director Abhishek Pathak has tightened the film a bit. The interesting thing is that even after watching Drishyam 2 made in Malayalam, the eagerness to watch its Hindi remake remains till the end. The climax of the film is the real soul of the film and enjoying it again and again even after knowing it is something like knowing the taste of vanilla ice cream and keeping tempting the mind to eat it again and again.

When I first heard that Jeethu Joseph was making a sequel to Drishyam, I was cynical. I mean, c’mon, why? Too many film and serial makers have been done in by their inability to stop when the going’s good, the most recent example in the suspense arena being the disappointing Season 2 of the series Big Little Lies that smashed it out of the park with Season 1. Drishyam was too well done for its legacy to be disturbed by a poor sequel. But guess what, viewers? That cynicism was misplaced. Jeethu Joseph has dunnit. He really has.

Not having enough and expected high points in the first half of Drishyam 2 goes against the film, but it manages to cover up for that in the latter half of the movie. Watch it for all the thrill that it promises in the second half. It is also an honest adaptation of its original Malayalam version.

It’s most reflected in Ajay Devgn’s passive interpretation of a man whose underwater churning is camouflaged by a serene exterior; minimalism is not the same as less acting. As a result, there is never a sense that Vijay is morally compromised despite his desperate actions over the years. On the contrary, the implication is that he is, as his name suggests, a ‘winner’ for gaming a system rigged against victims. A twist does not necessarily imply shrewd storytelling; it can also mean that a rigid film is unwilling to detect the flexibility of life. Drishyam 2, then, becomes the cinematic equivalent of a person who would rather be admired than be seen. In doing so, it reduces image to visuals. And story to commercial success.

Drishyam 2 is shorter than the original and thinks up a few cosmetic changes. Yet, it is at best a dreary, if steady, carbon copy with only a stray line here or an insignificant stroke there that might be deemed somewhat fresh. Not enough to hold the film together. On the acting front, Ajay Devgn strides through Drishyam 2 with confidence. But Akshaye Khanna is a bundle of mannerisms. There is little in his overly affected performance that can put Murali Gopy’s interpretation of the character in the shade. The rest of the cast go along without feeling the need to push their roles in new directions.

All said and done, yes, the last hour does bounce back the lost interest but that’s the issue because the OG was more than just a jaw-dropping climax. Tabu was as much as she was in the trailer, again certain character decisions making her distant from the viewers compared to the prequel. Ishita Dutta’s Anju never touches on the impact Ansiba’s Anju had with exploring the PTSD around the character. Mrunal Jadhav, too, adds nothing substantial to the narrative. Saurabh Shukla & Rajat Kapoor are decent in their roles.

The climactic twist in Drishyam 2 is worth the 148-minute running length despite a few extremely forced plot points. Drishyam 3 has already been officially green-lit — and only a radical rethinking of the crime at the centre and its expansive impact on the lives of those who are embroiled can keep the Drishyam saga alight. The directors and writers, like the characters in the film, would need to see anew or from an original angle.

Powerhouse actors in a power-packed film… Director AbhishekPathak delivers a fantastic thriller… The fiery confrontations cast a spell… DON’T MISS. Drishyam2 takes time to come to the point – the first half unravels at a leisurely pace – but the second hour [the drama, thrills and serpentine twists-and-turns] takes it to the winning post… DSP’s background score is top notch, enhances the impact.

Overall, Drishyam 2 dishes out plenty of twists and turns to keep you hooked throughout, just like its predecessor. And the story of the Salgaokars will continue to remain in public memory. Amitabh Bhattacharya’s song Sahi Galat that comes with the credits and the title track is upbeat. Saath Hum Rahein is slow but perfectly filmed to capture the bond family share. The background score by Rockstar DSP (Devi Sri Prasad) blends well and adds to the intensity of the drama.

The plan turns out to be elaborate, and as unexpected as it was in Drishyam. However, in its execution, it is not as smooth, requiring an incredulous breach of basic protocols by police, which would lead any competent judge to throw the case out, as well as a string of much-too-gullible people around Vijay. The remarkable change in his fortunes adds to the whiff of notoriety about him now.

Speaking of anticipation, Georgekutty’s excessive dependency on Murphy’s law for his schemes is why Drishyam 2 always feels more designed than organic. In its Hindi counterpart, Vijay harps about man writing his own destiny yet believes way too much in serendipity. There’s a potential third film in the works and we can only wonder what new Plan B Georgekutty and, like it or not, Vijay Salgaonkar have in mind.

There’s a thing about Ajay Devgn films that all you cinephiles will admit. The man doesn’t need hard-hitting dialogues to garner claps and hoots. Expressions and walk hi kaafi hain! The same applies in Drishyam 2 as well. However, the film has some interesting bits too that do deserve a chance in the theatres. But the question is, will you?
