The first images show Ncuti Gatwa as the 14th Doctor and his companion Millie Gibson

With filming having just started, the first official images of Ncuti Gatwa as the 14th Doctor of Doctor Who are available on social media, accompanied in the series by Millie Gibson. In the available images, we see the new Doctor in full costume, with a brown checked coat and trousers, brown leather shoes and an orange shirt. The second image features Gatwa with co-star and partner, Gibson, who will be taking on the role of Ruby Sunday. In the image, the couple is on set in front of a trailer, smiling for the camera.

Gatwa was cast as the 14th Doctor in February. “I knew I had the role since February this year, so it was tricky trying to keep it under wraps because I have a very big mouth,” Gatwa revealed in a BBC red carpet interview in May. After Jo Martin in season 12, Rwandan-Scottish actor Gatwa is the second black actor to play the role. He will also succeed the first female doctor, Jodie Whittaker, allowing the series to continue its push toward inclusiveness and diversity. “This role is an institution, it’s so iconic and it means a lot to a lot of people, including myself”, he said “I am very grateful to have received the baton and I will try to do my best”.

Nothing will be the same again and the Sex Education star will wear a completely new guise in the history of TV series. Recall that in the past, the passing of the baton of the role of the Doctor involved artists and actors of great level such as Christopher Eccleston, David Tennant, Matt Smith, Peter Capaldi and Jodie Whittaker. The latter, known to the public for her role as Beth Latimer in Broadchurch, also represents the first female Doctor Who. It becomes more and more necessary to add diversity on the screen and Gatwa will be the first gay Doctor, but also the first Black Doctor.
