Ayushmann Khurrana Movie Doctor G Critics Review: Whenever a film of Ayushmann Khurrana is about to come, it seems that what new thing the guy has done this time. He has made a different genre for himself and that is why the expectations from him increase and after watching the trailer of Doctor G, these expectations were increased further. Last week a Bhopali film was released, Chakki. Also released this week. Bhopali means its backdrop is Bhopal. The name of the film is Doctor G. In this, Ayushmann, the hero of small towns, is in the lead role. It has been created by Anurag Kashyap’s sister Anubhuti Kashyap. She has earlier made a web show Afsos. This is his first experience making a feature film in a way. Let’s see how he did in this.

Overall, Doctor G had set out with a noble objective, but lost its path along the way. This comedy-drama forgot to prescribe the best medicine, which is laughter. Ayushmann Khurrana gives his all for a weakly drafted character that fails to stand out. Rakul Preet Singh also plays her part well, but overall their pairing lacks chemistry on the big screen. Sheeba Chadha effortlessly manages to bring the innocence of her character alive, while Shefali Shah plays Dr. Nandini to the T. Other cast members, including Shraddha and Priyam Saha lend able support to the film.

Doctor G could have done without a few things – like the end-credits dance track (which defies every single fiber of the film), an on-the-nose monologue or two, and even the broadness of Uday’s sexism. Most Hindi films take the shortcut of presenting a blatantly-flawed protagonist so that the redemption feels tangible. Perhaps if Uday were introduced as a man who is not so obviously guileless, Doctor G might have been a more rewarding story. But there is a lot to appreciate about the decisions the film takes towards the end; there’s never a sense that Uday is a finished product. No matter how far he goes to help someone, his mistakes emerge from a space of misguided masculinity. The film may end, but you suspect that the man is still figuring things out. He is still moving. The road ahead is long, bumpy and pregnant with possibility.

The film doesn’t experiment with form a lot given the content is so layered with the filmmaker trying to prove so many points in the fixed 2-hour template on screen. The film-maker has a wonder in Sheeba Chaddha, playing Uday’s culinary expert, companion-desiring mother with a disarming simplicity. She’s played moms we want to tightly hug before too, but every time, she becomes a new version of this endearing personality. She and Ayushmaan make quite a team. The scooter rescue sequence involving the mother-son duo where the cries for a serious emergency and GPS woes are mentioned in the same breath capture the everyday drama of everyman’s life most brilliantly. Doctor G is a frothy first film. It’s feel-good yet says a lot of significance in a succinct manner, proving Anubhuti Kashyap knows both her craft and feminism.

Khurrana is also back to being the confused, yet good-hearted Indian male who learns to navigate noisome bodily fluids and reproductive systems in full flow with respect and sensitivity. As Dr Uday Gupta, he earns his spurs well enough. Shah, as the finger-wagging senior doctor, comes off familiar. Chaddha has a few nice moments, but I do wish Bollywood would give her a break from being mum to these coming-of-age young men. Both these ladies deserve more to themselves. It is Rakul Preet Singh who makes the most of a role which could have turned out to be cliched, but doesn’t because she makes so light of it. Learning to wear a stethoscope naturally, like an extension of themselves, is also a feature of all good doctors.

It deserves to do well but having said that, it must be added that poor promotion will come in the way of the film realising its full potential. Many among the public do not know about the film’s release and several among them are not even aware of the film’s existence.

It’s two different movies pre & post the interval where the first half will give you a proper ‘humour/drama’ balance but the second half would leave you thinking did you really like the first hour so much to enjoy this overall. All said and done, in a scene, Ayushmann Khurrana’s Uday says to Ayesha Kaduskar’s Kavya “Don’t be stupid because you’re not!” & those are my exact feelings for this film defined in one line.

In totality, Doctor G is a fun, light comedy film which is backed by a social taboo subject. Though the film is supposed to be about the struggles of male gynaecologists, it drifts apart in the course, thus making the main theme of the film secondary. Just when it appears that Doctor G has got its act together though, it wraps up with a ridiculous song accompanying the end credits that, in its filming, completely contradicts everything that had been said so far. Doctor G is the story of a man who learns to take women seriously. And along comes this song, with Uday/Ayushmann in baggy doctor’s garb singing Mera dil dhak dhak karta hai surrounded by women in tight, tiny attire in the same colour combination while Fatima/Rakul in a figure-hugging, revealing outfit heaves her bosom and thrusts it towards him as he lies down. If a film does not treat its own chosen theme with respect, how can we?

Watch this film if you want to take a break from the actioners and mystery-thrillers that are gracing the big screen every other Friday of late. Despite its run-of-the-mill template, Doctor G manages to offer a kind of novelty and brings us back the Ayushmann Khurrana we have been yearning for.
