An unsolved case from years ago, a brilliant but socially complicated detective, and a team of misfits are the core elements of the Dept. Q, the new British series that will come to Netflix tomorrow, May 29. The plot follows the chief inspector Carl Morck, a policeman with an exceptional talent for solving crimes, but with a personality that has left him isolated within his police force. After a shooting that left a partner seriously injured and another deceased, Morck is relegated to Department Q, a newly created unit to investigate unsolved cases in Edinburgh, Scotland. According to Netflix, Department Q is nothing more than a public relations strategy to divert attention from the internal problems of a police force with limited resources. However, what begins as a punishment for Morck becomes an unexpected opportunity to form a peculiar team. Among his new companions are Akram Salim, an assistant of Syrian origin played by Alexej Manvelov, and Rose, a cadet who seeks to demonstrate her worth, embodied by Leah Byrne. Together, they face a case that reopens old wounds: the disappearance of Merrit Lingard, a prosecutor who disappeared years ago under mysterious circumstances.
Based on Jussi Adler-Olsen’s eponymous novel series, “Dept. Q” is a British Netflix series that follows detective Carl Morck (Matthew Goode), who must lead a new unit dedicated to unsolved cases that has been created to distract the public’s attention from police failures. While investigating the disappearance of a prosecutor, he deals with guilt over a shooting that cost him the life of a rookie officer and left his partner bedridden. The thriller created by Scott Frank (“The Queen’s Gambit”, “Godless”) is set in Edinburgh, Scotland, and begins with Carl and his partner James Hardy (Jamie Sives) coming to the scene of a crime that did not correspond to them. When they check the place, they don’t notice that the killer is still there. The consequences: a dead rookie cop, Hardy with a shot to the spine, and Morck with a neck injury. While Hardy is bedridden, Carl recovers and returns to work, but has to live with guilt. In addition, you must attend regular therapy sessions with Dr. Rachel Irving (Kelly Macdonald). When Agent Moira Jacobson (Kate Dickie) is offered to finance a new department, she decides to accept to use the resources in her unit and puts Morck to work alone in the basement.

For years, Merritt’s case was a mystery. He had disappeared without a trace, just after receiving threats after accepting a very high-profile case against a powerful businessman, Graham Finch. The key to everything lay in her past: when she was a teenager, Merritt had wanted to run away from her boyfriend, Harry, from Mhor, but everything had gone wrong. Merritt’s brother, William, was brutally attacked by Lyle, Harry’s brother, leaving scars for life. Harry died soon after, in circumstances never cleared up, and Lyle was sent to a correctional facility. Merritt, over time, became a prestigious prosecutor … but the ghosts of the past had not ended her. What no one knew was that Lyle had not only not forgotten what happened, but had been fueling a deep hatred for Merritt. Years later, he assumed a new identity, slipped into his life, and ended up kidnapping it.
For four long years, he and his mother Ailsa kept her locked in a hyperbaric chamber, torturing her physically and psychologically while waiting for her to confess to killing Harry… which never happened, because she simply did not. Department Q’s investigation, led by Morck, Rose, Akram, and Hardy, was pulling the thread until it reached Mhor. A 999 call, an agent’s fortuitous visit to the Jennings’ home, and William’s recovered memory were key pieces. They discovered the body of a murdered police officer and, most importantly, found Merritt alive. Thanks to one last joint effort, they managed to stabilize the chamber so that Merritt could survive until the arrival of the doctors. Lyle tried to stop him, but was shot down. Her mother, Ailsa, killed herself before surrendering. Merritt was finally released and was able to reunite with her brother.
Who is Behind the kidnapping of Merritt Lingard?
In “Dept. Q” Lingard is shown to have been locked in a hyperbaric chamber since it disappeared. In addition to torturing her, the couple who kidnapped her forced her to think of the people she harmed and to repent for her actions. If you can guess who’s in that horrible place, you can be free. In four years, he has not succeeded, and his captors begin to lose patience. Meanwhile, the protagonists discover that Merritt had a lover, the journalist Sam Haig (Steven Miller), with whom he shared information about Finch. Sam died while climbing shortly after the prosecutor’s disappearance. Is related? After hard research, they understand that the man Lingard met is not the real Sam. So, who is it about, and why did you cheat on Merritt?
The real culprit is Lyle Jennings, who met Sam at a troublesome youth camp. The journalist contacted Lyle to write a book about his time at Godhaven, which Jennings took advantage of to steal his identity and get closer to Merritt. Why? To, along with his mother, avenge the death of his brother Harry. When she was a teenager and lived in Mhòr, Merritt had a difficult life due to her mother’s abandonment and her father’s vices. He only had one friend, Harry Jennings, with whom he shared his escape plans. To help her, Harry decided to break into her house and steal Merritt’s mother’s jewelry. William discovered it and attacked it. Lyle appeared at the time and brutally beat William, leaving him with permanent brain damage. Harry tried to stop his brother, but it was too late. When the police blamed him, he decided not to protect Lyle and later died while on a Ferry. Near the end of “Dept. Q”, Merritt discovers the truth, but refuses to admit guilt for Harry’s death, as he did not ask him to do anything for it.
Can they rescue her? Mhor’s bailiff arrives at the scene, but is killed by Lyle. After that event, mother and son decide to escape and let Merritt die from the pressure of the hyperbaric chamber. Carl and his team arrive on time, but they must get rid of Lyle to help the prosecutor. Meanwhile, Lyle’s mother commits suicide. At the end of “Dept. Q”, Merritt is rescued and sees her brother again. She recovers and thanks the police for saving her. Carl’s department receives funding, and Hardy officially joins the team. The shooting Morck and Hardy survived is not resolved, but they discover that it was intended to kill other officers. Who was responsible? Hardy appears to be in charge of investigating the case.
The Finch Case and System Corruption
While all this was going on, there was a parallel plot in which Graham Finch, accused of killing his wife, went unpunished thanks to the fact that he had blackmailed the Lord Advocate, Stephen Burns. Finch knew that Burns’ daughter had run over a man and used that information to pressure him. To protect his daughter, Burns betrayed Merritt’s trust and exposed his key witness, Kirsty, to a dangerous situation. Kirsty, frightened by retaliation inside prison, withdrew her testimony, and Finch was acquitted. Morck, upon discovering all this, did not stand idly by. He couldn’t bring Finch to trial without solid evidence, but he could prevent him from approaching Kirsty. In addition, he used the blackmail information to put pressure on Burns: either he collaborated by increasing his department’s budget, promoting Akram, and providing them with more means, or the whole truth would come to light. Burns accepted, aware of the seriousness of what he had done.
