Dark Matter: The Plot
Jason Dessen is a brilliant scientist whose research has taken a back seat to the love of his life. When he married Daniela, they both put his career aside in favor of the family. One night, Jason goes to congratulate a former friend, Ryan, on winning a prestigious science award, and is kidnapped by an unknown assailant, drugged and taken to an unnamed building. After passing out, Jason wakes up in a scientific facility, undergoes a series of tests, and is welcomed home with open arms by his colleague Leighton. The problem is, he doesn’t know Leighton, he doesn’t know the place, and he doesn’t understand what’s going on. Jason’s efforts to win back his life seem futile as he begins to question if he has false memories or if this isn’t really his home. He searches for his wife and his friends, but their confusion about his whereabouts, as he has been missing for over a year, and her recounting of their past only makes matters worse. Leighton has plans.
It turns out he knows something, he’s not the ‘real’ Jason and the project that brought Jason to them left their brilliant colleague out there in the multiverse, costing him billions of dollars and causing him to lose the only person who can crack the code. of dark matter. Meanwhile, in his original reality, Jason’s initial attacker is revealed to be none other than the very bright Jason Leighton misses. He sent her other self into his reality of him, to live the life he never had with Daniela and their son. Her motivations lie in wanting that life, but Daniela begins to notice differences and soon discovers the fact that her husband is not who she appears to be.
When ‘prime’ Jason is rescued by Amanda, a psychiatrist who works at the research facility, they end up in the car that got him there in the first place. It turns out to be a sort of Schrödinger box, allowing people to enter the area between realities and exit to completely, different places existing everywhere and nowhere at the same time. The two begin to visit reality to find the original Jason, before his doppelganger completely takes over his life and wreaks havoc in his reality. However, Amanda and Jason need a specific chemical for their brains to accept the machine’s reality warping, and they only have a limited amount. It’s up to Jason to discover the machine’s secrets, what he has learned about dark matter and how it affects reality, and whether he’ll ever come home.
