DAMaN Movie Review: The Story
There was a Mohan Bhargava comes from America to India to change something and here Siddharth comes from Bhubaneswar to Janbai of Malkangiri. This is a backward tribal Naxal-affected area. People trust Desari (Tantrik) more than doctors. Terrible malaria is spreading. No one listens to the doctor. Siddharth has to deal with all these. Since he has not come to Malkangiri of his own free will. He has been sent here under a government scheme. To do PG in this, three years of rural service is very important for young doctors. Siddharth tries to escape from Malkangiri several times. His colleague compounder Ravi stops him. But Siddharth must go. But how will the hero go like this? He must do ‘Daman’, that is, eradication of Malaria in inaccessible areas (prevention of Malaria in inaccessible places).
The film is set in a remote village in India, where malaria is a major problem. The story follows the lives of the villagers and how they struggle to survive and cope with the disease. The film is inspired by true events and highlights the struggles of the people in rural areas who do not have access to proper medical care and treatment. ‘Daman’ is completely a film of Siddharth’s intentions. The special thing about ‘Daman’ is not its grandeur and divinity, but its truthfulness. Whatever it is, Vishal Maurya and Debi Prasad Lenka have shown it in the same way, without adding chili spice. It is said that this is the real story of Dr. Omkar Hota. This film addresses all the social problems. Why do tribal people not trust the government system? Because they have not been convinced till date. Naxal-affected areas have their problems.
DAMaN Movie Review and Analysis
The name of the story in ‘Daman’ is only that much, which I told you about above. You will not get to see many twists and turns in the film. It can also seem slow on many occasions. There may also be repetition in some places. Some scenes seem to be drawn for a long time. The montages that have been used to take the story forward. They could be trimmed. Some good scenes could have been put in its place. Well, many sequences have become very touching. When a woman starts having labor pain, she must be taken to the city hospital. There is no boat to cross the river. It’s a wonderful scene. Not only is the acting great, but its filming is also great. In a frame in which the woman is lying on the ground, Ravi is sitting beside her and Siddharth is getting frustrated. This frame shakes you deep inside. For this, personal thanks to the film’s director Vishal, Debi, and cinematographer Pratap Raut. But again, I’ll say the same thing.
Pratap Raut has done a great job with the composition of the camera and light. He used artificial light very smartly. The light source present in the frame has been used in many ways. In many places, the light of the lantern has been made a means of revolution with the camera. Low-key light sequences are also very apt. Especially in some scenes inside Dr. Siddharth’s house, there is the careful use of light and camera. Most handheld cameras have been used in the film. Long shots have been taken. Which makes the location and situation more real. I really liked the sound design of Tusharkant Jena and Avinash Mishra. He has simplified the regional voices in many ways. The sounds of crickets and all the animals in the background sound very realistic. Foley’s work is also good but could have been better.
Because on many occasions you can catch that these voices have been inserted separately. The performances in the film are top-notch. Babushaan brings to life the characters with their powerful acting, making the audience feel their pain, joy, and hope. The chemistry between the lead actors is noteworthy and adds depth to their performances. The film is beautifully directed, and the cinematography is stunning. The director has done an excellent job of capturing the essence of rural India and the impact of malaria on the lives of the people. The film uses a lot of handheld camera shots and close-ups, which give it a raw and realistic feel.
Odia language star Babushan Mohanty has lifted the film on his shoulders. He has very easily brought the restlessness of Siddharth’s mind to his body. The realism of regional cinema is visible in his work. In the role of Ravi, Dipnavit Dashmohpatra has acted as a settled actor. On many occasions, I saw him getting heavy on Babushan. Hardly anyone could have played Ravi’s regional quirkiness and sensitivity better than Dipnavit. All the other actors also did their part well.
