Crew Movie Review: Simple Film It is Not Pretentious It Delivers What it Promises

Cast: Tabu, Kareena Kapoor Khan, Kriti Sanon, Diljit Dosanjh, Kapil Sharma

Director: Rajesh A Krishnan

Where to Watch: In Theaters

Filmyhype.com Ratings: 3.5/5 (three and a half stars)

The film Crew, which is releasing on Good Friday, is a film that emphasizes the new establishment in Hindi cinema for which the heroines of Hindi cinema have been working very hard for the last decade or more, and that is equality with the heroes. So, the joint effort of Ekta Kapoor and Anil Kapoor’s companies, the film Crew, has come out to compete with the hero-dominated comedy franchise films of Hindi cinema like ‘Dhamaal’, ‘Golmaal’, ‘Housefull’ and ‘Welcome’. Crew means the squad of employees working in an airplane. The story is of three air hostesses. All three are poor. All three have their problems. All three are unhappy with the changing economic condition of the country and the crimes of all three are shown in the film in such a way that whatever they are doing is right. This is the DNA of director Rajesh A Krishnan’s cinema. Remember the OTT film ‘Lootcase’ starring Kunal Khemu? This is Rajesh’s second film after ‘Lootcase’ and the first to be released in theaters.

There are some movies whose vibe is understood by the promotional material. Crew is such a movie. In this movie, you get what the trailer and songs promised. The story of three women of different age groups, who want to do something in their lives. But they are not able to do it. Although there is no dearth of restrictions for women in our society. But this movie does not get into all those issues. It is only about money. There is no pretense of feminism. No masquerading. The Crew does only what this movie has been made for Entertainment. Do you remember any recently released women-centric film that has comedy as well as glamour? No, right? All the women-centric films being released these days are based on some serious issue or a real incident. But Crew is not like that at all. In Kareena Kapoor, Tabu, and Kriti Sanon’s film Crew, the makers have added a tadka of comedy along with glamour. Not only this, its genre, its cast, and its story are also quite fresh. But the question arises whether the story of this film is so strong that one should go to the cinema to watch this trio. Read our review.

Crew Movie Review: The Story Plot

The film Crew is the story of three air hostesses. All three are of different age groups. The oldest one taunts the youngest one for repeatedly trying to apply makeup. The middle one is fond of social media. She takes a selfie with a big brand product whenever she gets a chance. The youngest one has her tale of woe. She is from a village in Haryana where there is an airstrip from the British era but no plane has ever landed there. Her family members made her study to become a pilot. The economic conditions of the country are such that an educated pilot has to work as an air hostess. It is a big sarcasm. You must have been reading news about people with PhD, MAs, and MBAs applying for the recruitment of Class IV employees. Here the matter is just a little more respectable than that. She is also cleaning the ‘potty’.

Well, these three flight attendants have not received their salary for six months. The owner of the airline company in which they are working is abroad. An employee of the company is making ‘special’ supplies for them from here to abroad. The matter comes to light when one day one of their pilots falls at an altitude of 35 thousand feet and a case of gold smuggling comes to light. The real twist in the story starts to loosen from here. People smuggle gold from abroad and bring it to the country, but the opposite is happening here. All three try hard to improve their financial condition with this new ‘knowledge’, but the matter is caught due to a smart customs inspector. But keep in mind that this is a women-oriented film and here there are three women. All three decide that they have to bring the country’s ‘Kohinoor’ back to the country. When the system is unable to do anything, the public does such crooked things.

Crew Movie Review and Analysis

The story of the movie Crew is good. Its atmosphere is good. Direction is also good. The only big flaw is its casting. The audience is fed up with seeing Tabu abuse. She is a good actress but directors are slowly typecasting her. Tabu does not have many other options left at this age. After one typecast character, the third character Kriti Sanon is also no less typecast. By showing her as a helpless girl from a poor family, showing friendship between brother and sister and by showing her changing her uniform in the bathroom after leaving the house wearing a pilot’s uniform, the duo who wrote the screenplay of the movie has typecast her as well. Kareena’s acting is the only ray of light. Kareena Kapoor Khan’s character keeps going up and down like the scales of a scale. Kareena has also lived her character well. If the dialogues of the film were better, then this film could have been a ‘mast family entertainer’. The double-meaning dialogues of Dada Kondke type inserted to attract the youth only spoil the fun of the film.

Trupti Khamkar has done very good acting in the role of the customs inspector. However, the presence or absence of Kapil Sharma and Diljit Dosanjh, who are present only by name, does not have any effect on the film. The second problem of the film Crew is its technical team. The graph that Rajesh A Krishnan has set up to make the film look huge and amazing is good but the colors used in this graph are crude. The makeup and hair design of the actors in the film is very bad. Every actor looks like a decorative doll placed in a showcase. The background music seems to have been taken out from a music bank and added to the film. Not a single song in the film is worth remembering. There are names of seven lyricists and five composers in four songs. Tips Company is with us, yet ‘Choli Ke Peeche Kya Hai’ and ‘Dilli Sheher Mein Mhaaro Ghaghro Jo Ghumyo’ should not have been in such a bad condition. The boy gangs helped a lot in making the film ‘Animal’ a success, now the test is of the half population i.e. girl gangs, whether they go to see this film in groups or not, the business future of the film will depend on this.

The casting of the film is quite interesting. However, the story of the film is not that good. The film has comedy and glamour, but there are a lot of illogical things as well. This is the reason why this 2-hour 3-minute-long film seems boring and long in many places. The songs of the film also did not seem that special. Yes, Diljit Dosanjh and Badshah could not create that special impact together. Crew is a fun film. Because that is what it wanted to be. But today’s environment is such that we want ‘something’ from every film. Entertainment is no longer the sole purpose of cinema. The entire system has gone haywire. Therefore, every film cannot be judged on the same scale. You cannot expect every film to educate you. For example, last week ‘Madgaon Express’ was released. It was the story of three friends who go to Goa to fulfill their childhood dream. There is no similarity in the stories of Crew and ‘Madgaon Express’. But both of these are the same kind of films. These are films made for pure entertainment. There is no attempt to force vocalism and positive correctness in them.

Crew falls short on only one level, that is the script. The most important thing for making a film. A little more work can be done on it. Because in the second half, the film falters many times. However, if we go into what should have been done, then we will find some or the other flaws in everything. So let’s focus on what we have. Crew is a women-centric cinema. Such films are expected to prove a point. Take a stand for their tribe. If nothing else, then at least give a lecture on feminism. Otherwise, what’s the point of a women-centric film? Crew breaks this preconceived notion. If you have no complaints about ‘Madgaon Express’, a no-brainer comedy starring three male actors, then why do you expect a flood of knowledge from a film like Crew? And it is not that the characters in this film are not strong. Or that their empowerment was not talked about. It was just not announced. But why do you need everything in your face?

Take Tabu for example. She played the role of Geeta Sethi in this film. Geeta runs the house with her own money. Her husband manages the house. Both of them have a dream, that they are struggling to fulfill. But this thing has been shown in a very normal way. There was no need to highlight it. Which is also right. Kareena has played the character of Jasmine Kohli. Her grandfather is the only one in her family. She wants to establish her own cosmetic brand. She bears the expenses of her grandfather. She is an independent girl. Whereas Kriti Sanon played the role of a Haryanvi girl named Divya Rana, who is a pilot by profession. The underlining of the characters is enough to tell this. There is no need to mark anything separately.

The biggest quality of Crew is its casting. The chemistry between Tabu, Kareena, and Kriti is interesting. Because these three have played characters of almost the same age as they are in real life. Seeing them together, it seems that they had a lot of fun shooting for the film. Because that thing is visible on the screen. But for me, the achievement of this film is Tabu’s performance. Amazing comic timing. Seeing Tabu, it seems that her personality is quite different from the films based on which her image has been created. In this film, you can connect Tabu with the character Geeta. Kareena has done a relatable role after a long time. You must have met many girls like Jasmine played by her in your life. Or you must know them. There is a scene between Tabu and Kareena in the film. In this scene, Jasmine’s character is applying foundation on her face. Geeta interrupts her and says-

“Stop it, Cleopatra! It’s a foundation, not a time machine.”

Kriti Sanon does not look weak or inferior in front of these two. She should count this as her achievement. Apart from these people, actors like Rajesh Sharma, Diljit Dosanjh, Shashwat Chatterjee, and Kapil Sharma have also worked in the Crew.

Crew Movie Review: The Last Words

If you want to see Kareena Kapoor Khan’s acting and her glamorous avatar, then this film is the best. You can watch this film in theaters to enjoy the trio of Kareena, Tabu, and Kriti. If you like watching comedy films that do not require much thought, then you can enjoy this film. But, if you like watching films based on a little serious topic, then this film is not for you. If you go to the theaters just to watch good content, then you can skip this film. Crew is a simple film. It is not pretentious. It delivers what it promises. If you want to watch a film without any baggage, then go and watch it. It will feel fresh.

Pros

  • Winning Performances: The film's biggest strength seems to be its cast.
  • Lighthearted Fun: If you're looking for a breezy comedy to unwind with, Crew might just fit the bill

Cons

  • Uneven Humor: While some jokes land well, others fall flat
  • Predictable Plot: The story doesn't break new ground. The core heist plot and the social commentary on wealth disparity have been explored before
  • Rushed Execution: The focus on the personal lives of the characters might undermine the comedic pacing, with the actual heist feeling rushed
