Call Me By Your Name 2: Luca Guadagnino Is Still Thinking Of A Sequel With Timothée Chalamet

Luca Guadagnino still wants to make Call Me By Your Name 2, a sequel to the 2017 film with Timothée Chalamet and Armie Hammer. The Italian director explained his idea for the development of the work and also underlined how the sequels in general represent an “All-American concept“. Speaking to IndieWire’s microphones on the occasion of the Telluride Film Festival, Luca Guadagnino stated that Call Me by Your Name 2 would not represent a real sequel to the story behind the first film but, rather, would follow the growth of the character of Elio, played by Timothée Chalamet. “A sequel is an all-American concept,” said the director, adding: “It would be more the chronicles of Elio, the chronicles of this boy who becomes a man. It’s something I want to do”.

The first film follows Elio, an Italian teenager in the 1980s (Chalamet) who experiences a heady summer romance with his father’s research assistant, Oliver (played by Armie Hammer, whose career then imploded. allegations of sexual assault). The romantic drama was a great success with audiences and critics and won an Oscar for the screenplay by James Ivory, based on the novel of the same name by André Aciman. Call me by your name has also collected three other Oscar nominations: one for Best Picture, one for Best Actor (Timothée Chalamet) and one for Best Song (Mystery of Love by Sufjan Stevens).

Luca Guadagnino has never hidden his desire to make another film centered on the character of Timothée Chalamet. Last year, the director told Deadline: “The truth is that my heart is still there, but now I’m working on this film (Bones and All), I hope to do Scarface soon and I have many projects to concentrate on“. As for Bones and All, the film premiered at the Venice Film Festival 2022 and brings together Luca Guadagnino and Timothée Chalamet, the star of the film together with Taylor Russell. Michael Stuhlbarg, André Holland, Chloë Sevigny, David Gordon-Green, Jessica Harper, Jake Horowitz and Mark Rylance complete the cast.
