Breathless Ending Explained: Who Attacked Jessica and What Happened to the Other Doctors?
Breathless Ending Explained: A new series, Breathless, is coming to Netflix on August 30th. It is a gripping medical drama that intertwines the human stories of doctors and trainees and work difficulties, with a strong rebuke of the conditions of the Iberian public health system. The action takes place inside the Joaquin Sorolla hospital in Valencia, a polyclinic like many others in Europe, on the brink of collapse, with a medical director always struggling to make ends meet, the pressure of politics, the union struggle to defend the profession but above all the quality and possibility of providing a service to those who need it and, above all, the trenches of the ward and the operating room. Moving in this eternal emergency environment are young trainees and experienced doctors, with their stories, doubts, fragilities, and mistakes, without forgetting the inevitable intrigues and secrets. It is a truly gripping series, on par with the great titles that have made the history of this genre, starting with the inevitable touchstone, Grey’s Anatomy.
Created by Carlos Montero (Élite and “The Mess You Leave Behind”), Breathless” is a Spanish Netflix series that follows a group of doctors from the Joaquín Sorolla Hospital in Valencia who fight to save the lives of their patients despite the conditions of public health. Tired of the situation and due to a tragic event, they call a strike without primary care. Does this measure work? Who is affected? How do they solve it? Below, I tell you what happened to the protagonists. The eight-episode medical drama begins with Néstor Moa (Borja Luna), a renowned oncologist, operating on Patricia Segura (Najwa Nimri), president of the Valencian Community. When the strike begins, Moa debates whether to stop or continue with the surgery. While the nurses await the surgeon’s response, Pilar Amaro (Aitana Sánchez-Gijón), the head of surgery, insists on going ahead, and Biel de Felipe (Manu Ríos), Moa’s resident, must also make a decision.
Breathless Series: The Story Plot
The first scene of Breathless already projects us into a high-tension scenario, in the middle of a surgical team that is operating on a patient while outside protests are taking place to ask for more funds and tools for a collapsing public health system. When midnight strikes and the day begins on which a total strike has been called, in the operating room the doctors are faced with a terrible choice, continue or stop and postpone joining the fight to support a system that must save thousands of patients every day? While their hands are still working, the clash of principles and conscience is very hard. Then the direction cuts and takes us months earlier, to tell us about the dramatic events that led to that difficult choice that hangs over the surgeons in the first scene. We thus get to know the characters and discover that the boy we glimpse under the mask in the operating room is Biel, a young specialist with the dream of becoming a doctor.
A dream shared with three other boys, like the apartment where they live and the place where they put themselves to the test every day: the Joaquin Sorolla Hospital in Valencia. Following Biel, we soon get to know the older doctors: the brilliant oncologist and trade unionist) Nestor Moa, the very strict doctor Pilar who everyone fears, and the young but already experienced Jessica, the older sister of one of the specialists, Rodrigo, who suffers when compared to her. At the head of the hospital structure, we find Luis who, as medical director, is more worried about the accounts that never add up than by the possibility of helping as many people as possible, and he too, like the others, has a life in which there is no shortage of drama and secrets.
Breathless Ending Explained: Who Attacked Jessica and What Happened to the Other Doctors?
Lluís Bonet (Alfonso Bassave), the hospital director, must not only deal with Rodri’s suicide and its repercussions but also with Néstor Moa’s organization of a strike without primary care. Patricia Segura arrives at the Joaquín Sorolla after a car accident and finds herself facing a familiar face, Biel, as well as a cancer diagnosis. Due to Moa’s prestige, Segura agrees to be his patient and follows most of his instructions with the promise that the doctor will put his health above his political ideas. After the chemotherapy, Néstor moves the surgery forward to the day before the strike, but Pilar puts obstacles in his way to get him to give up the strike. However, when the time comes, Moa leaves the operating room and Biel stays to help Pilar. Meanwhile, Leo (Ana Rayo) and May (Marwa Bakhat) argue over a sexual assault victim. Despite finding no evidence of the attack, the gynecologist notes it in her report to help the victim.
The complaint proceeds, but Leo had no idea that the attacker was his son. After discovering this, he asks May to declare that she does not agree with his diagnosis. May only says that she performed the examination and is not sure of the result. While the strike forces some members of the team to take unthinkable measures, May refuses to comply with the strike, which causes an argument with his girlfriend Rocío Fuster (Macarena de Rueda), who decides to end their relationship and fight for custody of the baby May is carrying in her womb. After her brother’s death, Jessica seeks comfort from her boyfriend Lluís Bonet, but he is too busy with the strike and the rape accusation against his son. So she turns to Biel, who can no longer hide his feelings. When Bonet discovers the deception, he asks Biel to stay away from his girlfriend and proposes marriage to Jessica.
What Happened to Patricia Segura?
Segura’s party uses the strike and her illness to force her to retire, but she strikes back and declares war on Moa. However, they manage to resolve their differences (including the strike) and become doctor-patient again. Because her cancer has metastasized, Patricia must undergo another operation or undergo experimental chemotherapy. The problem with the second option is that it is very expensive and difficult to access due to the policies established by her own government. In the latest episode of Breathless, a severe storm occurs, causing power outages at the hospital. During the crisis, Patricia has a hemorrhage and undergoes emergency surgery. Moa and Pilar managed to complete the intervention successfully despite the power outages. After Nestor admits that he would like to be her friend, Segura makes a drastic decision: to accept the special chemotherapy and turn the hospital into a private one.
What Happened to May’s Baby?
May goes from doctor to patient during the storm, as she gives birth to her daughter. When Rocio approaches to meet her baby, May forbids her from getting close and demands that she speak to her lawyer. Rocio offers to give up custody as long as she doesn’t take the little girl to Germany, but her ex-partner refuses to listen to her. May decides to leave her baby sleeping in her room to help the patients. Rocio takes advantage of this to take her daughter. Meanwhile, Leo learns that the young woman who accuses his son does not want to go to trial and only wants the guilty party to admit his crime. Leo talks to his son, who refuses to confess. After she yells at him that she did it, Lluís Bonet informs her that his son will move in with him after the legal process.
Who Attacked Jessica?
At the end of Breathless Jessica admits that she loves Biel, who is very excited until Lluís Bonet shows him the engagement ring he bought for his girlfriend. Before this love triangle can be resolved, a patient who tried to take his life by swallowing knives attacks Jessica. Although the moment is not shown, everything seems to indicate that Manu stabbed her and escaped. Biel finds her, but will he be able to save her? Will there be a season 2?
